Multiple sponge filters or just one bigger one?

I have used an old Aquaclear HOB packed with filter floss (rather than the sponge and ceramic nuggets that it comes with) to tidy up after disturbing the substrate and/or cleaning a really dirty filter. Based on how much filth I find in the floss, I'd say it removes quite a lot.

For reference the last time I cleaned it was 2 weeks ago.

I think those Co-op air driven sponge filters can go many months without cleaning. I have a couple in my guppy growout tank that are going on 7 months and aren't clogged yet. The same material used as a hob pre-filter clogs much sooner.

I wouldn't say it's bad enough to justify investing on one of those yet. Generally the cheaper sterilizers don't do much, so making the investment to a quality UV would be a big leap without taking care of the lower hanging fruit.

I’ve use the green killing machine 3W in my 20 and 38 gal tanks.  Works well, but I can’t find a replacement bulb.  You can try water changes, and easy carbon. Or, embrace the green and use it for breeding ….
