Ken Burke
My angels spawn fairly regularly, but being that they live in a community tank, the eggs never last a day. So I decided to buy a fluval breeder box and try pulling the eggs. While I’m not positive a can raise them, I figured “swing for the fence” and log my process. Tuesday, 5 April 2022: I returned from work and notice the angels had spawned. I cannot tell for sure which male is Lucy’s partner because all three were crowded around the leaf that held the eggs. And all three had their sex organs out for spawning. Hank, the older larger male, seemed to be getting pushed a little, but was fanning the eggs. I trimmed the leaf and put it in the breeder box, carful not to expose the eggs to the air. The breeder box is similar to a HOB filter, but uses air to lift tank water into the box. Water flows through the box and out a chute on the other end. Neat design, wonder if it could work as a filter. I would need to increase the flow from what I get right now, but maybe. 1
Ken Burke
Thursday 7 April: I’m a little surprised at the amount of mulm setting in the box. I put a pot scrubbed in the first chamber to try limiting the amount that makes onto the eggs. I’ve had several turn white, so I used a pipet to knock off most of them off. My eyes are not what they used to be, so can’t quite get them all.
Ken Burke
So that did not wok. 8 days later nuttin’ Hank and Lucy were beating Ricky up pretty bad, so last night I moved him to the 20 T. No other fish, but lots shrimp to keep him company (he he he) the tonight found this in the big tank! Yup, free swimming angel fry! Yayayayayyyyyyy i though Lucy was eating them, so I pulled a few. now what! 2
Ken Burke
So the next round of eggs did not make it. But the babies I pulled are getting stronger, and I found a few more hiding in the back corner. 1

Ken Burke
That batch and the next did not make it. I’m going to try Ricky and Lucy alone in a 20 tall.
Ken Burke
Finally, Ricky and Lucy are spawning! I was about to give up, then @Guppysnailsuggested feeding blood worms in a different post. 3

Ken Burke
Now that the spawning is done, Lucy has Ricky confined to the left 1/3 of the tank. I’m debating about pulling Rick and letting Lucy try it on her own.
Ken Burke
So Ricky eat the eggs today. So swapped him and hank. Let’s see if the old man can get the job done. Please excuse the algae on the front glass

Ken Burke
Hank and Lucy have spawned several times since my last post. Still haven't managed to raise any angels but seem to enjoy trying. Well, they are getting ready again. but I made an interesting observation. Ricky, who currently resides in the tank next door, thinks he has a shot too. Hes all colored up, and ready to spawn. Has anyone else seen this? 2

Ken Burke
My angel fry have been free swimming for a week now. I’m concerned about the mulm buildup, but the water quality is still good. @Fish Folk, how long until they are strong enough to fend for themselves with other fish? I have two tanks that could work, one has corydoras, the other plecos I think they woul fair best w the plecos, but IDK.

I have limited space so I like to experiment with how I can combine fry. More often than not it leads to lots of losses but the Plecos never hurt the fry in my experience 1
Fish Folk
I personally like to wait 1 month before letting them fend in any mixed community tank. 3

Ken Burke
Right at 2 week of free swimming and they have graduated to cyclops and daphnia. I’ve lost several, but 1 or 2 dozen. They have more than doubled in size, and are much stronger swimmers. Sorry for the blurry pictures, I just can’t get the camera to focus on the right thing….
