Besides the populations thriving, there is not much in the sense of evolution, so it looks pretty close to what I started with. It sits by a window, there is no heater, no light, and gets a water change once a week. I call it "Pint o'Dune" This is what I used: - Flower vase from many moons ago, it holds less than a quart - Leftover gravel from my first tank - Clay egg that was not being used for plants in another tank - Extra nano pump and airstone - Brown paper towels The inhabitants: Snails (of course), Rhabdocoela, blackworms. When the topic of this friendly competition came up I was contemplating separating out my skittle shrimp and reading about Walstaad no-tech jars at the time. I already had 4 nano setups going, so what was one more, especially if it was no-tech? I wanted to document here and in the process of gathering photos realized how easy my photo software could convert to video... so I uploaded one! No filter, heater... just the window light and a desklamp with an incandescent bulb that helped keep the jar warm when the kitchen hits the upper 50s at night. Materials were all in the house or on the farm: lemonade jar play sand (from the bag next to the door we use when rare ice appears) leftover fluval stratum rocks foraged from the New River eons ago foraged short moss foraged moss in jar foraged wispy moss from basement steps (added to wood) oak firewood scrap baby java ferms taken from Endor tank cuttings from QT tank ID on forum previously as a couple of things spider plant baby foraged ground pine assorted botanicals, including privet, holly and other leaves, seed pods and hickory nut shells my chicken coop squirrel leaves me duckweed (need I say more) bladder snails from other tanks 6 neocaradina shimp offspring from my "skittle" tank (babies of OG the snowball shrimp). I had never even kept an aquatic plant before last fall, so going no-tech was a big step for me. Glad I challenged myself and appreciate the help on many fronts from so many members here. It seems a bit difficult not to over fill with plants and decorations but that’s the fun finding the balance. This tank was ready to find it’s self deep in the storage closet I was going a different way in my fishroom then this started and it jumped back on the work bench. It’s a 3 1/2G tank with built in filtration that I pack with scraps of aquarium co-op filter pads. No heater and an air stone, that I had to take apart and change the pads. For plants I have an Anubias that is part of a 3 way cut I did on one of my oldest Anubias. Amazon sword also from a cut plant only in half this time. Pothos hanging from side is a clipping from a 40+ year old plant. Hardscape I used black common gravel, I seem to always have extra of this around. I have river rocks 12 of them ranging from 1” to about 4”. While the bulk of this rock is in my 125G it’s spread amongst a lot of my tanks so finding some of this was easy and I took 1 piece from each tank I could find it in = 12. The branches and twigs are leftovers from another tank set up definitely the newest item in the tank but purchased way before start date. Stocking, I’ve got an endler male and a female guppy, they have already mated and I count 5 fry. The build of this tank wasn’t to complicated above is the first lay out, below I had to modify the lid because I have branches hanging from front and I needed tank to face this way and output set up for lid in other direction. Another modification to the lid , I placed blinders in front of lights. This will make front of tank much darker than back. above before blinders below is after blinders. Eventually it will be home to a couple RCS but I still need to order those, so right now just a few bladder snails. It's my spouse's tank, just like the tanks I used to service in the 90's were the doctor's offices' tanks.
