Hyphessobrycon negoduaga (Butterfly Tetra) Territorial Display

Recommended Posts

Hyphessobrycon negoduaga are a fairly new tetra to the hobby. I bought a group of 6 this past fall I lost 2 within days of receiving them but ultimately ended up with 3 males and 1 female. I separated a pair and managed to produce a batch of roughly 20 offspring.

I’ve tried to get videos of the mating display from my pair but the tank is very heavily planted and they’re pretty shy. The offspring on the other hand were placed in my 40 gallon that resides in my living room. They’ve finally reached maturity and I’ve managed to get some decent videos of their display. This video shows two young males sparing at the end of their territories. The mating display is similarly but very fast and hard to capture on video (the male and female typically dart into vegetation to spawn).

Much like the few other reports I’ve seen on this species I find them to very easy to keep and breed. The males have shown some mild aggression to the ember tetras now that they’re mature but I haven’t seen any signs of stress or injuries thus far. I just wanted to share because they’re such little information out there on these beautiful little fish.

Got to try sharing video links again. Nothing appears to be linked. What an amazing success! Congratulations. My hat’s off to anyone who can breed tetras successfully in a home aquarium.

**my bad** the species title is a YouTube link. Thanks for sharing!!!

I love your Laetacara too. Beautiful tank! Do you dose CO2? Your parameters look really dialed in. Super healthy plants.

Thank you so much it’s taken me a while to get everything balanced. I just recently had an algae outbreak but it’s mostly under control now. I’ve been running CO2 on an in-line diffuser for a few months now. I also dose my fertilizers with an auto dosing pump. I can’t trust myself to dose consistently enjoy for the results I want 😂

The little cichlid is actually an Apistogramma sp. d37 I’m working on breeding these as well.

Always interesting seeing new tetra species, you will have  to create a journal for us so we can see more of that tank and their behavior.

Thank you! I’ve been trying to capture the spawning behavior. It primarily occurs at sunset (I have a Fluval 3.0 and simulate a sunset) so the videos I’ve managed to get so far are very dark. If I do manage to get something decent I’ll be sure to share it.
