I’m working on breeding Apistogramma Cacatouides. I’ve set up a 20 gal. long, a trio of Apistos, and just added 12x Pencilfish from my LFS.

The LFS Manager doesn’t get Pencilfish in hardly ever, and I’m not certain he’s all that good at ID. I asked what his supplier claimed they were. “Coral Red Pencilfish.”

Nope. No way. I’m sure they’re not.

But can you help? Are these Beckford’s? Golden? Something else?

Sorry for all the live BBS in the water. Today was _that day_!

Alex Williamson recently posted a tidbit about Beckfords Pencilfish on the GSAS Facebook. Apparently at night the horizontal black stripes become more like a series of dots to better blend in with vegetation. He posted some pics if anyone wants to check it out. @Fish Folk, it might help with your identification.
