DO testing

Recommended Posts

So I ship fish using usps priority and it may take 2-5 days before the fish arrives at its location. I alway wonder what the fish looks like and how much the water have change.

So I decided to do a little experiment nothing too fancy so it's not 100% accurate, but it gives me an general idea.

Water from my well right now..

Tds for cold water is 65 and hot water is 90, ill be using cold water.

I'll be using this DO test

Straight from the tap..DO is kinda low since my well is so deep

It went up after 24hour with an airstone and that's the water I use to ship my fish

I'll be "shipping" 2 bag 6 fish each, 1 bag white cloud and 1 bag rainbowshiner. All fish have been fasted for 24hour and they was in the bag 8:00am Monday till 8:00pm Saturday. No extra oxygen was added. Both 6inch bag was laid on their side the long way, with 40% water.

P.s. no fish was harm in this experiment, I made sure to check on them everyday, ready to pull the plug if they did look right.

Rainbow shiner bag water was still clean, ph went up abit, and nitrate went up to 10. DO was at 6 mg/l but it looks to went down to 4-5ish mg/l.

White cloud bag water was a bit cloudy results was pretty much the same. 20220226_205930.jpg.f30deed2c98f55910f181c5b9e714380.jpg20220226_205841.jpg.b57834e7e83d082c15bdf3bfd6e41c20.jpg

TDS did go up from 65 to 87&89

In conclusion they did very well, temperature was controlled at 65 degrees. I'm sure cooler water would help.

A good experiment. Anecdotally, I have had success shipping using breather bags. I seal up boxes fairly well, but all fish have survived so far in both moderate and cold weather. I use USPS Priority Mail, so 2-5 days is the window for delivery. From Western MD out to Washington, Indiana, Massachusetts, New York, Florida, Ohio, everything works out Ok.

Maybe try this same experiment at home with a breather bag? See what happens...
