Is ammonia a large concern when adding potted soil (capped) plants to existing tank?

I am planning on adding a plant in a 8oz mason jar with Miracle grow organic (the walstad recommendation) potted mix capped with sand or gravel to my almost year old 20g planted tanks.

I have two questions.

1) Should I expect an ammonium spike?

2) Would you expect a system like this to be able to handle a spike without killing off the fish?

Interesting project you have.

A 20 y/o planted tank sounds amazing enough but if you want to add soil to it…

yes you can expect a spike in ammonia and nitrates.
Hard to say what that would do to your existing biological filtration. A tank that mature with established plants should be able to handle almost any short term dramatic change.
