Any tips for iron sand and magfloat?

Hi there,

 

Just wondering if anyone uses an iron based sand substrate and if you have had issues with the magfloat cleaner collecting the sand as you clean the glass. Over time this builds up and raises the mag float to a point where the blade at the front is no longer effective. Has anyone experienced this and if so are there any tips on cleaning it off and then preventing it from happening?

Yes, either don't use the mag or don't use the sand.

Due to the amount of scratches left by the iron being attracted to the magnet, most of us replaced the substrate. It didn't have enough benefits to offset the problems.

I have this problem with fluorite sand. Yup it’s a pain. I tend to just keep the mag float away from the bottom of the glass and clean that with something else, when needed.

Yeh fair enough, I think i will just clean the top 2/3rd with the float then hand tools for the edges - There is a ton of val growing in that sand so don't really want to switch it out at the moment
