fast does it grow and what do you do to get off before it grows back

I just used a toothbrush to get it off.. and it comes back in about a week or 2. It doesn't seem to bother any of the fish, and the plecos don't eat it. I am going to leave it to see how large it gets. It's the only piece of wood that does this. its super strange.

Brittle could be a lichen 🤔

If you have easy access to a county outreach department or the biology department chair at your local college should be able to help you identify. They may need you to bring in a sample in addition to pictures to get an accurate ID.

I would love to have some of that in a tank.

I had something similar to this pop up on a piece of spider wood I bought on alibaba. I did some research and the best thing I could come up with was Xylaria sp. That may not even actually be what it is, but it’s the best I could find. It popped up in a 5gallon tank with a Betta who ended up passing randomly. I did some further research and found it is slightly toxic, perhaps explaining the death of the fish
