Levi_Aquatics Posted January 13, 2022 Share Posted January 13, 2022 (edited) I have decided to start a journal on this forum to help myself learn and remember the ups and downs of my journey in this hobby and hopefully help others learn from my mistakes. I will start with a bit of background info about myself. I am a high school student from the hills of western Maryland. I have been keeping fish “seriously” for about 4-5 years now and currently have 5 aquariums. I will post a few pictures of each aquarium and share stocking lists and goals I have with each one. This is my 10 gallon purple mosaic ribbon fin guppy and cherry shrimp breeding tank. As you can see it also has a bunch of rams horn snails. I hope to start selling some of the guppies and shrimp on aquabid once the weather gets a bit warmer.Next up is my 55 gallon display tank. It is currently stocked with Odessa and green tiger barbs as well as a Bristlenose and yo-yo loaches. Next we have my 20L mutt guppy aquarium that is currently home to mutt guppies cull shrimp and kuli loaches. It has some green water currently which wasn’t intentional but helps the fry hide from the adults which is good. The only downside is that it’s harder for me to see the fish too. I also have a ten gallon with a male krib. I’m planning on getting a female and trying to breed them. This is my marineland 5 gal which is waiting for its next inhabitant which will hopefully be a pea puffer. I will have to make sure to remove the snail first. I am also helping my younger brother set up a 5.5 gal cold water aquarium for some danios or whiteclouds. I would love to hear what you think about my aquariums and any suggestions for improvement that you have. I would also love to answer any questions you have about any of my aquariums. Guppysnail Posted January 13, 2022 Share Posted January 13, 2022 Well hi there neighbor. South central PA here. Your tanks look great. Your mutt guppies are going to be dynamo healthy. Green water doesn’t just allow hiding its nutrient dense at its finest. All of your fish look very healthy. I’m so glad you chose to start a journal. Levi_Aquatics Posted January 14, 2022 Author Share Posted January 14, 2022 I just got an Aquarium co-op package in the mail which is always super exiting! I’m eager to hopefully start shipping fish which is why I purchased the heat packs. The test strips are also great so far. I also got a much needed heater for my 20. (The last one shattered a few weeks ago) The fish are also getting fed live baby brine tonight which they always love for obvious reasons. Guppysnail Posted January 14, 2022 Share Posted January 14, 2022 Do you find the light gives a better or quicker hatch? Mine do great usually except the occasional one off. The hatchery is beside the tank so it gets some light during the day. I do have to use a heater or I get no hatch bHubby keeps the house at 68. Good luck shipping. Those heat packs are huge. Levi_Aquatics Posted January 14, 2022 Author Share Posted January 14, 2022 @Guppysnail I mainly use the light for heat because my house is kept in the high 60s. The bulb isn’t efficient so it produces a lot of heat which is perfect for my application. I have never tried without the light so I’m not sure if there is any difference in hatch rate or anything like that. Levi_Aquatics Posted January 17, 2022 Author Share Posted January 17, 2022 Today I did a water change on my 10 gal guppy/shrimp/snail breeding aquarium. I also noticed a bit of what looked to be fungus on the fin of my pea puffer, who I decided to name Claire, so I treated her with some ich-x. Additionally, I found and purchased an albino female krib on aquabid so I should hopefully be able to start breeding kribs. Lastly, I fed some of my fish blackworms which they seemed to enjoy however my puffer didn't like the frozen bloodworms I fed last night. Any ideas why? She has probably never been feed them before. Before you fed them again maybe skip a day of feeding then give bloodworms. She will probably start taking them. Mine did same thing now they love them. Levi_Aquatics Posted January 19, 2022 Author Share Posted January 19, 2022 So update on Claire (the pea puffer) She had a small bit of fungus on her right pectoral fin. I have been treating her with ich-x for the last couple days and it seems to be improving. After the fungus clears up I plan to start a deworming process that @Colu recommended. The orange shrimp that I purchased are still doing well and I can't wait for the female to drop the shrimplets! Levi_Aquatics Posted January 23, 2022 Author Share Posted January 23, 2022 One lucky pleco! So today I purchased a 75 to replace my 55 gallon. The lady I bought it from said there had been a bristlenose in the aquarium but she was unable to find it when she broke it down for me to pick up. All the other fish were in buckets and the hardscape was in a bucket without water in it. After a 3 hour drive home I set up a quarantine aquarium and put the fish in it. After that I went to inspect the hardscape and found the little guy in an inch of water at the bottom of the hardscape bucket. He must have been stuck in one of the fake rocks. I tossed him in the bucket with the other fish then transferred him to the qt aquarium. He is doing great now and I'm excited to try to breed him with a bristlenose I grew out from a fry from petco.
