scott the fishman
hello fish keeping friends! So just got home from work, and i see not 1 not2 but 4 dead snails on the substrate. the yoyo loaches and zebra loaches are eating them. tested water every good except ammonia that reads 0.50 i am doing a 50% WC right now. could that have killed them?
DaveO
My first inclination is the loach killed the snails and snail debris caused the ammonia.

1moretank
I have not kept mystery snails, but I know that fish can suddenly decide to eat snails when they haven't done so before. Good luck.

The .50 ammonia reading is what makes me believe the fish killed the snails. Likely ammonia was on the rise when you caught it because that level should not suddenly be lethal. It could be the snails just looked plump and tasty today.☹️
eatyourpeas
My LFS uses Yo-Yo loaches to control the snail population, so they could have developed a sudden need for "escargot" on the menu. Mystery snails are fairly big, so I agree with @DaveO on them being the probable cause of the ammonia spike.
Odd Duck
Agree that loaches are the likely culprit with secondary small ammonia spike from snail remnants the loaches couldn’t get to still in the shells. Remove the shells and the ammonia will likely clear by tomorrow.
