Every time you post pics of dace hatchlings it strikes me how independent they are right from the start but also how loooong they are compared to so many other hatchling fish.  It makes perfect sense considering their environment, but I find it very neat to see a clear adaptation difference between species.

And here’s the results…

I had to gently nudge a few sticky eggs off the glass hatching container. They’re stickier than other eggs from similar species.

All eggs went into this little 2.5 gal hatching tank. Methylene blue added (1-ml). Let’s see if we get any in about a week…

I think it is helpful to share both ups and downs, success and failure, solutions and mistakes. Recently, I’ve been very pleased with a new hatch of Mountain Redbelly Dace (Chrosomus oreas). It’s my brooder’s third successive hatch. I’m so pleased! Here’s a scene from before the drama…

But late yesterday, my over eagernesses  had gotten the better of me. I must have fed too much, tinkered around, etc. A bacterial bloom took off, and in a little 2.5 gal, the chemistry was headed for a crash. I added Kordon Amquel and some API Ammo-Carb to take the edge off. But fry were visibly stressed, struggling at the surface, and I knew this could crash the hatch. So, here’s the story…

This rescue Op was carried out between 12-1 am. Here it is 8-hrs. later now. Was a move worth the risk? Reporting…

Ammonia Titration test on the 2.5 gal shows some ammonia, but definitely stabilizing…

Indeed! Raising fry for sale.

Damn, when did you start them up ?
I might have to think about getting another 75 gal tank
cause I'm talking to white cloud mountain minnow
about his fish to go with the shiners in a few mons
& get another 75 gal for the Mountain Redbelly Dace.

But that's going to be down the road for another
tank & more fish like maybe next year depending.

Congratulations!!!!

Just how much flow do those Redbelly Dace need?

The adults appreciate something like a river-stream, powerhead, spraybar, etc. Juveniles do fine with air-stones / sponge filters.

Got some nice free swimming Chrosomus erythrogaster fry (Southern Redbelly Dace)…

Meanwhile, my Mountain Redbelly Dace also spawned today…

I pulled the eggs afterward…

In the end, got a wee haul…

These sell pretty fast for me once they’re a few months along. Hatching them in a bottom 20-long with some M-blue…
