About Mormyrids and Dr. Cutler:

Mormyrid fishes may be among the smartest fishes in the world and use electricity to orient, navigate and communicate. Joe Cutler has been conducting fieldwork in Gabon and studying cryptic mormyrid diversity for seven years, he will share stories from the field and updates on mormyrid science.

Dr. Joe Cutler is a freshwater ecologist, conservation biologist and National Geographic Explorer. He has conducted several fish sampling expeditions in central Africa, collecting hundreds of fish species — including dozens new to science. Using this data, coupled with museum records, Cutler provides guidance to central African governments and conservation NGOs on balancing development and freshwater conservation. In 2019, Cutler received his Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Cutler’s stories, writing and photographs have appeared in several of National Geographic’s media outlets.
