Leo2o915
So decided to order some dwarf chain loaches to help with the snail infestation and going to be moving my shrimp into my 10 gallon qt tank that will make into a permanent shrimp tank what can I do to make it a easy transition for them ? How can I get most of them out of my planted 20 long safely ? Or am I better off making that 10 gallon the permanent home for the 4 dwarf chain loaches and just feed them the snail from the 20 long
Alesha
I'm not sure what to tell you about where to put the fish, however, you'll want to put the pygmy chain loaches INTO the tank WITH the snails. There are probably a bazillion snail eggs in that tank. You'll want those loaches sniffing those out to keep the hatch-rate down. Even if they don't burrow their noses down into the substrate, they can get to the ones above it and also get the babies as soon as they hatch. I notice mine seem to eat the small snails first. I hope that helps.

Yeah debating if I would be easier on the shrimp to leave them in the 20 long and just start scooping out snails and throwing them in the 10 gallon with the loaches or if I can find away to move most of my shrimp safely into the 10 gallon
Alesha
The loaches won't bother the shrimp, at least I haven't experienced that. I once saw a pygmy eating a dead shrimp, but I've never seen them chase the adults. They might be munching on the shrimp fry, though. I don't know. Brandy
What kind of shrimp? I have never had much problem just literally dumping the shrimp (red cherry and amanos) from one tank to another--as long as temps and parameters are close. My shrimp are most bothered by predators, so the real thing I do if they are going into a stocked tank with larger fish is collect them into a small container in the day, wait until night and turn lights off before I release them and feed really heavy before I do. If you are moving them to a tank with no fish, you should be fine? Like I have literally netted them out and directly dumped the net into a new tank with zero losses for hundreds of shrimp. Now, shrimplets getting eaten are another thing...
