Do nano pond fish like deep water or shallow water?

I have a 30 gallon pond that has about 2 dozen gold ricefish. The fish are doing great but they seem very skittish in deeper water. I don't have any in a shallow tank so I don't know how they would act in that kind of environment. I put some L. Sessiliflora, hygrophila corymbosa, hygrophila angustifolia, and alternanthera reinikki mini. There is also some water lettuce. I think that there is a lot of cover but the rice fish seem to be very shy when I come to feed. Also, I haven't seen many fry. I have a bunch of snails and I think that might be a reason for there being no fry. Could anyone tell me if snails eat eggs? And if they do, should I leave them in the tub or take them out?

The pond is 5 feet deep but the rice fish hang out in the top couple of inches. They must like it well enough because I put in a handful and now there are thousands.

They also don't seem to have any problem with hanging out in open water either. They are possibly the least demanding fish I have ever kept.
