I have a small half burned piece of wood from the fire pit, currently soaking in a combo of hot water, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, and paraguard. I already removed rough edges and loose bits of charcoal and ash. I'm assuming it will be safe to add to a tank once I've thoroughly rinsed it. I'm wondering if the charcoal part will help with water quality, but I don't really know how charcoal works. I know it needs to be "activated". But I don't know if that's what partially burned wood is. In any case I think it could look nice and give a future bristlenose something to graze on.

Activated charcoal's ability to absorb is finite, so after about a month (unless you had been medicating the tank) is when you would pull it. Keeping the same charcoal in the tank for too long of periods causes the charcoal pores to release what they have absorbed, so I wouldn't recommend using this in a tank long term.

If this was wood from a firepit, I'd be more concerned about chemicals from exposure to any lighter fluids or things that get chucked in a fire (not all people do it, but I've seen plenty of fires where people throw stuff in them) getting leached out into the aquarium With the cocktail you've mixed together, the efficiency of the charcoal I would consider moot. I'd also be concerned about the charcoal releasing the alcohol and ParaGard back into the water over time. Alcohol should off gas as long as you let it air dry for a while, or better in direct sun in a hot day.
