@Odd Duck Thanks for the tip on the fruit fly containers. Also, I never cooked my oatmeal, just made a slurry out of it with cold water. I wonder if cooking mitigates the chances of mold forming later.

Yes, it should since you will get it to above boiling.  I do mine in the microwave.  Use a MUCH larger bowl than you think you will need since it will boil over and make a big mess if you don’t.  I also place a damp paper towel over the bowl to contain spatters.  I add quite a bit more water than I would for making my own oatmeal because I’m cooking it longer to break down the starches more.

I am using some 1 quart canning jars.  The ones that have a 2 part lid with very shear cloth.  I tried some of my vinegar eels in these and I think I am getting a better yield.  I think it's because it has more surface area and air exchange than the bottles I was using.

@Sapphere how are you harvesting your vinegar eels?

I move them to a bottle first then, with a pipette off the top.
