This is really awesome!

What is your PH and water hardness? Where'd you get your original stock?

Thanks! My pH in this tank (at work, not at home) is up around 8.0 pH, if I recall. Hardness is middle-of-the-road. I messaged a breeder online about stock. We want to respect community guidelines here on the forum, so I'll refrain from mentioning the name here. Shoot me a PM, and we can follow privately.

Here’s my approach to spawn #3:

(1) Use Lees Small Specimen Container with a drop or two of Methylene Blue in tank water and a light air flow.

(2) Remove egg tray, move rocks out, draw out eggs, and put into the m-blue hatchery container.

Here’s the eggs visible on bottom of stone tray…

And here’s the “haul” after all stones are removed…

Here’s a look at eggs drawn out in syringe…

Here’s the hatchery container…

And here’s the batch of eggs on floor of hatchery…

This is a fun stage of fish breeding. I’m confident enough to experiment! If this fails, I won’t fail to LEARN!

How many did you start with for your initial school?

Long story short, the breeding group of adults was about 24x total. I started with more, but lost about 10x along the way. They really like flow, but I discovered that the small Hydor powerhead I started using was so exciting to them, they were wedging their heads in between the opening slots… thus decapitating themselves! A few others were genetically weak and succumbed to misc issues. I had at least one jump out of the tank.

Short answer: 24

But, you really only need a group of 7-10. As long as you’ve got 2x females, you’re good to go.

I sourced some from a place I was going to put an order in once I've got my QT's back up. Might just have to tag these onto the order. I'm going to dig and check out more about them, I'm mainly concerned with when I keep them indoors about temps being too high for them and in turn burning them out.

They’re fine for me at up to 74°-F room temp.

I’m still learning this process - dialing things in. There’s been a “die-off” of the most recent batch of fry. About 1/3 - 1/2 are dead in the container. Ammonia levels will have spiked. So, here’s a video showing the clean out of dead, preservation of life. The living fry go immediately to the cycled Java Box for best chances of survival. They should be able to free-swim in 2-3 days if they survive. There is an older batch in there. So… hoping they make it.

I’m going all-in on Rainbow Shiners. This will mean that I’ve got to free up tank space. Hard decisions…

I’m going to move along these Dwarf Gourami. They are fun, wicked-smart fish. My breeding ended up yielding just one fry in the end.

I’m going to remove the heater from the 20 gal long, and let it cool before adding shiner fry.

I’ll be bidding these lovely fish goodbye…
