CT_ Posted July 22, 2021 Posted July 22, 2021 I've got a lot of babies that about 1/2-3/4" right now and I've just been throwing in crushed flake. What else do people feed. They're too small for the hikari nano pellets. is this still "fry food" territory. Is fry food any better than crushed flake? 1
GameCzar Posted July 22, 2021 Posted July 22, 2021 (edited) I've been really impressed with co-ops Fry Food. I've also crushed micro pellets for my CPDs when they were younger. But they prefer the fry food. Edited July 22, 2021 by GameCzar 1

When I first got my fish tank I laughed at the people with 100 different foods. I guess this is my punishment 😛 On 7/22/2021 at 4:24 PM, Jeff said: Live and/or frozen baby brine shrimp. Thanks, yeah BBS is awesome but I'm looking for dry to minimze work. They're in a tub outside so they get whatever else grows in there for live food.
mountaintoppufferkeeper Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 Vinegar eels, coop fry food, crushed flake, first bites, live baby brine, and every food i feed adults crushed down. I use my (fish room only) mortar and pestle to work any dry pellet, flake, or freeze dried foods including black soldierfly larvae that I feed adults down to fry sized food particle. I feel like that gets them used to the smells / tastes involved for later on, keeps me from having picky eaters if i trade them out, and keeps the variation going for the different nutrition each contains. 1
Andy's Fish Den Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 I have had good luck with co-op's fry food. If you don't want to buy another food, use a mortar and pestle like @mountaintoppufferkeepersuggested and grind up something you do have. I have a small one I use to grind up pellets or flakes to a powder to feed fry. 2
Taco Playz Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 I was watching a video and it said that you can use a pepper grinder to grind up food for fry. Seems like a smart idea. 4

This is what I do. Little 3 inch fish room mortar/pestle they get full variety plus hikari first bites and north fin fry starter as well as bbs and I just ordered a vinegar eel starter colony. 3
gardenman Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 I use a coffee grinder to grind up food for fry. What goes in varies with the type of fry but the coffee grinder (Mine is a Mr. Coffee version for under $20) grinds up whatever I put in to a fine dust. 1
David W Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 I have used a pill crusher to to turn pellets and flake in powder. They are pretty inexpensive at a pharmacy. Also make sure to consider that there are likely more differences in fry food and regular food than the size. I believe that most fry food has different ingredients that help the fry grow faster and healthier. The little difference might help tilt the scales of surviving vs thriving. 1
