I have been fasting this tank for a day and a half. I did a water change today. What in the world is going on with these ramshorn snails??!

Mine go to the top when there's an ammonia spike or not enough oxygen... Might want to check your water just in case.

Mine do this seemingly at random. They'll spend large chunks of the day hanging on floaters for seemingly no reason. No parameter issues or temp fluctuations necessary. I have noticed that my bladder snails don't participate in the floating shenanigans except on rare occasions.

Ran parameters ...

Not sure. I added more Fritz Complete.

(Obviously... Nitrate is very high! And this follows a water change... implying that this super stocked Growout needs more scrutiny... but this cannot exactly account for the snails... they would have been in _more_ nitrate before...)

Probably low oxygen if its after a water change, then. Could also just be the change in general that did it, sometimes you can shock their system if they were weakened by high nitrates. I would think that you would have seen a change in your fish, too, though.

Ramshorn snails have an organ that allows them to intentionally gather air in their shell. Doing this allows them to feed on the micro film on the top of your water.

Watching them rocket to the surface and bounce around in the water column is one of the reasons I take care to provide extra food for the little buggers. They're shockingly fun to watch, on top of being excellent janitors.

Love the tank!!!!😍

Oof those nitrates are high.

It is a planted tank though. I run my nitrates around 20 to 40 ppm in all my planted tanks and never have a problem with bladder snails or MTS. But, I have CO2 and high light in all my tanks. I also have a sponge filter and a separate air stone in all those tanks also. My fish are all happy and healthy. I truly believe nitrates are not dangerous until they get up around the 80 - 100 ppm range. This is just my opinion and experience with plants though. Others may disagree. Maybe @Cory could chime in on nitrate levels in a planted tank.

The test shows at least 80ppm nitrates, though.

I will mention... my titration drops are at the very bottom. I’ll be texting again with new chems to confirm. Quite possibly due to high stocking. But also perhaps a misreading.

Also, lets not forget cell phones aren't the best cameras.
