Fish Folk
I have been fasting this tank for a day and a half. I did a water change today. What in the world is going on with these ramshorn snails??! 1
xXInkedPhoenixX
Oh whoa! Did they move to the top after the water change? Is there something not to their liking?

xXInkedPhoenixX
....could be a temperature change too. I can't imagine @Fish Folk has too many parameter issues.
Speakeasy
Don't know for sure but was told...snails will detach and float down stream in search for greener pastures, so to speak...when I was breeding out ramshorns they would start to float whenever I dialed back food
Schwack
Mine do this seemingly at random. They'll spend large chunks of the day hanging on floaters for seemingly no reason. No parameter issues or temp fluctuations necessary. I have noticed that my bladder snails don't participate in the floating shenanigans except on rare occasions.

tonyjuliano
I’ve seen this before when there is a layer of biofilm on the surface. Snails love that stuff. 2

Probably low oxygen if its after a water change, then. Could also just be the change in general that did it, sometimes you can shock their system if they were weakened by high nitrates. I would think that you would have seen a change in your fish, too, though.
ARMYVET
Ramshorn snails have an organ that allows them to intentionally gather air in their shell. Doing this allows them to feed on the micro film on the top of your water. 2

Watching them rocket to the surface and bounce around in the water column is one of the reasons I take care to provide extra food for the little buggers. They're shockingly fun to watch, on top of being excellent janitors.
ChemBob
I've had snails do this before as well. I typically see it after either a water change or when I move around, remove, or add plants or decorations.

I run my nitrates around 20 to 40 ppm in all my planted tanks and never have a problem with bladder snails or MTS. But, I have CO2 and high light in all my tanks. I also have a sponge filter and a separate air stone in all those tanks also. My fish are all happy and healthy. I truly believe nitrates are not dangerous until they get up around the 80 - 100 ppm range. This is just my opinion and experience with plants though. Others may disagree. Maybe @Cory could chime in on nitrate levels in a planted tank.

ARMYVET
With that plant load it should get reduced rather quickly. It looks like you have quite a bit of fast growing plants. If not drop some pothos in there and your nitrates will disappear...LOL
