So, I'm not really "in love" with either of the designs below. This represents an evolution of a 40 breeder from initial set up for breeding Auratus (Golden Mbunas) to breeding Firemouth Cichlids, and then Electric Blue Acaras. It is a Breeder tank for us . . . so we let the algae go. We dumped a lot of crushed coral in. At first, it was kind of separated, but over time, it all mixes together into a speckled substrate. We use sea shells . . . for structure, but also because it adds a bit of minerals back into the water (our water is really, really soft). We gather shells out on Shackleford Banks, NC, and then wash off with Clorox and treat with generous amounts of dechlorinator (e.g. an entire bottle of Prime) and then air dry before rinsing again. Wisteria is our one-size-fits-all plant. Pothos roots dangle to suck up a bit more nitrate.
