kcochran
I'm going to be setting up a new tank for Cichlids, which I've never had. Can I take the filter material out my HOB from my regular community tank and put it in the new HOB of the new tank for the good bacteria? I know the PH levels are different for Cichlids, but I just wanted to make sure I am transferring the correct beneficial bacteria.
L.W. Wetarm
Yes, that would be a good way to start a new bio filter colony.

Eric R
That's what I do to setup new tanks all the time. Be sure to check ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels as there's always a chance that you will get a mini-cycle as the bacteria adjust to the new bioload. Also, if you're not going to add fish to the tank soon after you transfer the already cycled media, you can feed the tank some flake to encourage the bacteria to grow. lefty o
sure can, the bacteria dont care what kind of fish you put in with them.
