About Me

  1. Been looking around the internet lately and I am getting all sorts of conflicting and subjective information about filtration. I will be receiving a 210G some time this month and am still not quite sure what I will ultimately do with it stocking wise, but I wanted to get the less glamorous parts before it arrives. I am not certain if setting up a sump, canister, couple of massive HOBs, or a small army of sponges will be the best route. My previous experience with tanks has only been with HOBs and sponge filters, but I wanted to be able to place my cabinet flush to the wall, so I don't think I can make HOBs work, I worry about flow rates if I try to do sponge filters, I have no experience on how sumps ever work for freshwater, and I hear nothing but horror stories about canister cleaning and price. I am even thinking about trying to make a DIY filter system using a submersible water pump and few feet of PVC with eggcrate meshes to hold in media... So, I put it out to my fellow fishheads - What does your experience tell you for similar tanks? Which options are the most adaptable, or should I look into some combination of them. I know I will probably end up with at least a (relatively) small sponge filter for nothing else than to aerate the tank. Right now I am leaning into a canister; Fluval FX6 or 2 of their smaller ones like 407s, but my lack of experience is making me unsure if either would be appropriate, so any advice or expertise is appreciated! Thanks!
  2. Title really says it all. I know there used to be a 1L size of Easy Green available on the store but there isn't one there now. I have the first bottle I bought a couple years back and another bottle I got as part of the fert bundle they did a year back so I already have a pump for my display tank and my fish room. I am finally running low on bottle #1 and I'd rather refill the pump bottles I have than buy more pumps when I already have a few.
  3. I have lost 4 fish in the last month in a tank that is cycled and the plants are thriving. I have no idea whats going on. The temp is between 72-76 and these are my API liquid test readings since the 10th, with the last reading being today. In addition to this I also tested for stray voltage and the tank was fine in that regard as well. This is a video my husband took of the fish while I was out this evening, they were fine when i left, exploring the tank and bahaving normally, and dead when i got home 4 hours later. the fish were perfectly healthy and came from a local breeder. there were no signs of illness to be seen aside from the expected stress of being netted and transfered to a new tank. they were turkana jewel ciclids. The other two fish died in 4 days, and 2 days respectively, these onese didnt even last 9 hours. I have no idea whats going on. My snails are doing fine, and my mystery snail especially is thriving, but i cant keep fish in this tank to save my life. The tank contains flourite black sand substrate, river stones, seiryu stone, spider wood, and various plants that are all doing very well. The filtration is a nicrew internal filter at 50gph, using marine pure gems biomedia, marineland filter floss, and coarse filtration sponge. Ive never had this happen and i have no idea whats going on.
  4. I recently revamped this 5.5g tank after the betta that occupied it died. I used some spider wood I found on Amazon, some old gravel in a baggie (it was still wet idk if this is important or not), rocks from the existing scape, and plants from the old scape. The filter was the same sponge filter that I used before for years so this isn’t a cycling issue. I put some endlers I had on hand in there and within hours they were struggling like this guy in the picture. I put 3/4 of them back into the quarentine tank they were in previously and they are acting normal again this morning while the endler remaining is still struggling. anyone know what might be going on? Is there potentially some kind of toxic thing that got in the tank or something? I’m extremely confused and worried about the fish and my beautiful scape potentially going to waste. Thanks for any help you can offer. Ammonia: 0 nitrite: 0 nitrate: 20 ph: 7.6-7.8 kh: 3.5-4 gh: 7 TDS: 344
  5. I’m in the process of it, and I’m currently soaking my 24 hour bleached Purigen in 4 tablespoons of Prime and water. The instructions say to then soak it in a pH regulator for 4 hours before adding it back into the tank. I have one, but my pH is stable and slightly higher than 7. I’m worried that adding it back into the filter will cause my pH to crash. Has anyone had any experience with this?
  6. So a little bit ago I made a post about how my easy green pump didn't go very far down. Well it bothered me enough to the point where I took it apart. Turns out easy green solidifies at room temp and exposed to air. It was really cool to see solid fertilizer crystals. Solution: Unscrew pump head Take pump head and hold it upsidedown over the bottle/ bowl/ or your tank Pull off top part of pump (the part where fertilizer leaves) Take off the black piece that screws onto the bottle There is a white ring under black piece that screws onto the bottle, remove and dont lose Admire the crystals (pointed with red arrow) Take a cup of HOT water and dissolve crystals, I tried to remove manually but it isnt as effective. Agitate the pump by tapping it on bottom of cup Put back together aligned with the slits Works like new and is back to being satisfying to push down. Downside is my tank may be over fertilized now
  7. *PROBLEM RESOLVED* Hello fish keepers! I have a bit of a problem. I have two german blue rams who are bickering/fighting in a 32G aquarium (see picture). They used to be just fine (see full story below) but they now recently seem to hate eachother. I want to seperate them but it's super hard to catch them since they are way too quick, tiny and hide really well in the aquascape. I wish to find a way that to catch the fish without stressing them too much or risk hurting them and without having to completely tear down the aquarium. Right now, I plan to get them used to the net when I feed bloodworms to be able to catch one ''easily''. Please help me if you have first hand experience with this kind of matter. Thank you in advance! Full history of the fish : A year ago, two German Blue Rams (marked as ''golden'' although they seem more of a mix of regular GBR and golden rams) were sold to me as a pair. However I am pretty sure that they are of the same sex (from my readings it's hard to reliably tell between F/M). The aquarium has multiple hiding spots with plants, deadwood and rocks (see pictures). They were getting along, sharing the same hiding spots, swimming next to eachother, eating from the same spot so I originally thought they were a pair, but sometimes (rare) one would lightly chase the other one. It bothered me a bit as this is not a behaviour I see with my other fish, so I tried to net one but they are super quick, tiny and hide really well in the aquascape. I deemed it impossible to net one without causing more stress/injuries to the fish during the process or riping the whole aquarium apart. Since the chasing was light and would end as soon as it started, I decided that I was okay with keeping things this way. However, it's now been a whole year since I purchased them and recently (since last week) they have switched to a more agressive behaviour. I decided to wait a bit to see if this would resolve itself and make sure it was not a one time thing. But the behaviour did not go away and so now I am seriously considering separating them because this time I fear for the health of the fish. They seem to openely challenge (see picture) one another (especially around feeding time) and it's not the occasional light chase as they now trade pecks at eachother. I have tried to feed differently by spreadind the food around to reduce agression over food but it does not work. I have tried increasing the amount of food/feedings but this behaviour didn't go away. We are now back to my original problem of catching them without causing more harm or totally ripping the aquarium apart. Since I can get the Rams to come to the surface when I am feeding blood worms with a pipette, I am considering to get them used to the net during feedings and hopefully I'll be able to catch one by quickly raising the net. Please help me if you have any experience with this kind of situation. Thank you in advance!!
  8. Saw this in my tank this morning. It wasn't attached to anything and when I tried to pick it up with tongs it just fell apart. Very delicate. I ended up vacuuming it out. All of my water parameters are good. I did a water change last night and it was there when I woke up.
  9. I've had this nana petite for about 2 months now. It recently got covered in diatoms and then I introduced otos who ate the diatoms off but the edges of some leaves still look brown and some leaves have dark spots now. Is that a new algae? a deficiency? Maybe those were gaps in the diatoms and the plant made more chlorophyll there? I tried rubbing the leaves an nothing came off. I googled a bit and I saw a few people with similar problems do a quick bleach dip to remove the algae, but I don't want to do that if this isn't algae.
  10. I think I'm dealing with columnaris. As i live in Canada meds aren't an option. I have put 1Tbsp per 3 gallons of salt so far. I have only had it for 3 days so far but it seems to be spreading. another platy has white patch and seen guppies and a Synodontis Lucipinnis( some one really has to come up with a easier name for these) rubbing them self's against the substrate, this isn't happening very often maybe notice it once a day. All fish are active and eating well. I was wondering how long should i let it go before increasing the salt and is it even safe to do so with the Synodontis Lucipinnis, albino corys and snails to go to 2 Tbsp per fish. and if i do increase the salt could i move my plants to a different tank with out spreading it. I have Hornwort javafern and moneywort for plants. priorities are the Synodontis Lucipinnis since they cost about as much as the rest of my fish, then the rest of the fish and plants are dead last as they where only like 15 dollars so if its not 100% safe to move they are easy to replace.($10 to you guys) I am limited to Melafix, Pimafix , API® Liquid Super Ick Cure which from googling is not effective if its columnaris so salt seems to be the only option almost forgot water condition. I probably did have a ammonia spike as i removed half of my substrate then spread out the remainder this caused a lot of clouding once it settled i added a fine gravel substrate on top about 2 in thick. any ways when testing my water today Ph ~ 6.8 matching my tap water. ammonia > .2ppm Nitrite 0ppm and Nitrates ~ 40 ppm and tomorrow is my water change day was going to do 50% since missed last week and the nitrate lvl. any suggestions welcome and if the worst happens and i lose them all how should i clean the tank before restoking.
  11. any ideas? i noticed it 4 days ago, it seems very fagile but annyingly still there.. thanks in advancenoyingly present
  12. Hello, I really like the look of this aquascape with the long thin blades in back and then wider leaves in mid ground. Can someone help me identify these plants?
  13. Does anyone know if Ich-X will stain Easy Planters? The bottle says it might stain decor, and I know some silicone will be stained. Some people have had mixed results with driftwood. I can't seem to find anything about Easy Planters though. Maybe it's too new of a product to have a lot of use cases. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
  14. The person that was taking care of this fish no longer works in the office. What type is it so we can try to find a home for it?
  15. Tank Size: 36g bowfront, with two additional goldfish not showing any symptoms pH: 6.8 (the regular pH, per the LFS and my own tests, is 7.5) Ammonia: 0 Nitrite: 0 Nitrate: 10 Hardness: 100 Alkalinity: 0-40 (usually around 40-100) Temperature: 78 Right before bed I noticed my Oranda's scales are falling off. Panicked, dosed maracyn, 1tsp salt per 10 gallons, and added crushed coral. I'm not sure why the pH is so low; I've checked another tank and it's also 6.8, so I'm not sure if the water company is adding something to the water. I might wander to the LFS tomorrow and ask if they've noticed anything. I haven't changed anything in the tank in the last week; on the 19th, I added some Fluval stratum and plants, as well as moved things around. Yesterday, I fed them rinsed, cooked carrots, Hikari Vibra-Bites and also brushed off some sand from this fish. I also topped off some of the water. Today I threw in some sinking pellets they've never eaten before. Other than those new foods, they've been eating the same food (Repashy, Xtreme) as they have been since I got them in September. I did not notice the missing scales when I was looking at the tank earlier today, nor when I fed them. Is there anything else I can do for the fish? Or just wait and see? (apologies for the lighting; the only light on that tank now is a purple grow light)
  16. I got 5 guppies a few weeks ago, 3 females 2 males and added them to my 20 gallon planted aquarium. I think a couple of my female guppies are pregnant and I was wondering if I should move the females to a holding tank to give birth? if so should I have some sort of separation in that tank? Is there a certain time I should move the females? Are there any visual resources that show like the stages of guppy pregnancy? Is hikari first bites enough to raise guppy fry or do I need to order brine shrimp eggs from the Co-op? Thank you for all you help! Included photos of the possibly pregnant females together and then the males and other female in the tank.
  17. This is the best pic I could get as this is the first time I have seen it, but I have Panda Cories and Emerald Cories breeding freely in my tank and there is a fry that does not look like either species. I just seen this Cory with brown markings and IDK if there is a possibility that it could have come as an egg on a plant leaf or root or if it could be a hybrid of the 2 fish?? And if it is a hybrid could it breed with it's siblings it would it be infertile?? I would love to hear about hybridization of any other Cory species as well as I have just now found out that they can interbreed sometimes.
  18. Hi all and happy new year. Can anyone help identifying this plant? I just got it as a freebie with my susswastertang order and have no clue what it is 🙂.
  19. Hi I'm new to this forum and to aquariums. I have a 15 gallon high tank. It's been running for about 2 years. Lately my Cory catfish has been gulping air at the surface. So I figure I need to add an air stone. I just ordered a sponge filter and stone that should arrive in a few days. The tank has a hang on filter now. My question is should I run both filters or just the sponge filter? There's only 5 fish in the tank , swordfish, molly, tetra, peco and the cory. You're help is appreciated
  20. Water Parameters: pH -6.5 Nitrite - 0ppm Nitrate - 40ppm Hardness (GH) - 120ppm KH/Buffer - 0ppm Water Temperature - 76 F Ammonia - 0ppm My Dojo Loach has this strange red spot on his face. It has been there for a bit and just recently appears to have gotten larger. This morning I noticed that he starts to have small bumps on his body and small white dots. Sorry about the images, I know it is hard to see, but please can someone help me? I am new to fish keeping and really want to help him. Someone mentioned that it might be ich developing so I am going to go get some ich meds today after work. Is this what is happening?? How about the red spot on his face? Is the gravel scratching his face? Can it be heater burn? Please help me, I am so afraid for him T_T. Behavior wise, he is eating like normal and very active swimming all around the tank. Please let me know if you need any other information or images or anything. Also, sorry all the images are sideways, not sure how to get them to be the right orientation >_<
  21. When replying to a post, in the bottom left hand corner is a "Add Files" button. When I click it nothing happens. I use an android device, is anyone else having this issue? I see many photos being uploaded so I know its working for some... PS This button was working last week.
  22. I'm working on a new tank. I've got plants ready, but I'm going to move some cuttings from my other tank because it has so much java moss and hydrocotyle tripartita. That tank has a staghorn issue that I'm battling. How can I move the plants without the chance of transferring the staghorn with them? I can pick and choose easily, but tiny bits are all you need. Also if anyone has advice about dealing with staghorn... the tank is well planted. No CO2. I'm dosing easy green. No more iron in case that's making things worse. I've been trying to fight the staghorn with Easy Carbon (shooting it right on the algae, 1ml/10gal) and aggressive trimming. ...It's still growing and it's getting a bit frustrating. Advice appreciated. Can you up the dose of easy carbon? Should I stop the easy green? Thanks!
  23. My water comes out of the tap at 7.2. The only thing I add to it before it goes in my tank is dechlorinator. Just regular bagged gravel from Lowe's as the substrate. I rinsed that extremely well before it went in the tank though. Why then in the tank is my water showing 8.8? This is a 10 gallon tank that has been set up for about 4 weeks now. There are some moss balls, a couple dwarf chain swords, 2 java ferns, and 2 dwarf Lilly bulbs. No fish. I do use seachem flourish in the recommended dosage once a week. Im not convinced the tank is cycled though. Ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate 5. I want to eventually add cherry shrimp but at a ph of 8.8 plus I don't think I'll be able to do that. EDIT: I also use aquarium co op root tabs.
  24. So I received a mystery stem plant a few months back, it was suggested to be Limnophila sessiflora, but I think it's probably a Myriophyllum of some sort. Could be hornwort, but I think it's more frilly than hornwort I've seen. Anyone know what it is exactly? It grows super well.
