  1. Caught my Notropis chrosomus spawning this morning. Thought I’d shoot some video and show how I prepare the rock tray for collecting eggs. Also, this may help anyone trying to sex M / F shiners. Also enjoying the new powerhead, my rarely seen Rainbow Darters. Here’s Mrs. “Rainy.” Mr. “Bow” only appears when the dinner bell rings… The Trio of Xenotoca Doadrioi (Redtail Goodeids) get along perfectly well with the shiners and Darters, though I’ve not seen any fry.
  2. Going to try again to get our Rainbow Shiners to spawn. Added a small Aquatop water pump for flow. The Hydor Powerhead we had been using awhile back had slots large enough for them to get stuck in, and (sadly) decapitated a few. Also, following advice from other Hydrophlox Shiner breeders, I’ve layered the stones in the Pyrex container deeper to capture eggs. Interesting fact: there are two color varieties of Rainbow Shiners. The Red-sided variety, and these — the Blue variety. While both males develop power blue fins, this subspecies does not glow nearly as orange-red when in spawning mode. I will pull the container on Thursday to see if any eggs got caught.
  3. So, since the Shiners are colored up and chasing -- more in spawning mode -- trying the breeding pan again. still light colored rocks, but not all bright white like before. Big change is moving powerhead _down_ to blow across the pan. The Shiners seem to really engage more with the water flow this way. Also, reintroduced the mop for possible Darter breeding site. Again, NANFA article was the tip for trying a mop with Darters. Normally they bury in the substrate, but this is worth a shot. 60 sec. video . . .
  4. These fish are so fun . . . really impressed by their colors are they get into spawning mode. Planning on trying out another pan / dish to collect eggs tomorrow. Any tips? Once spring comes, we'll try them out in a mini pond for sure. But for in tank spawning? 30 second video . . .
