  1. I can’t seem to figure out what I’m doing wrong with my stem plants to cause them to keep melting away, so I’m looking for advice as to what might be the issue. My tank I’m having the most trouble with is my 60 gallon. My pH is 7.2 with a KH of 3. I keep the tank at 79 F with about 8 hours of light (hygger full spectrum) at 60% power. My substrate is a layer of gravel capped with sand. I dose easy green weekly, which doesn’t get fully used up so I’m going to lower my dosage, and use root tabs for all the plants as well. My dwarf tiger lotus and vallisneria are growing fine, but they are heavy root feeders unlike stems. I have some pogostemon octopus I got from LRB aquatics that is growing ever so slowly, but every other stem plant I’ve tried has melted. I’ve tried bacopa caroliniana, red myrio, Brazilian pennywort, anacharis, and most recently scarlet temple, which I got on October 30. Since then it has melted quite a lot, to the point of some of the stems completely melting away. My nitrate as of checking tonight is at 30 ppm, which is a week from my last dosage of easy green, which is why I’m going to be doing less easy green in the future. I do not run CO2 and would like to avoid running it if possible. I appreciate any advice on how to better grow stem plants or suggestions on a plant that may grow better than the ones I’ve tried. Thanks for the input.
  2. Hello, I am going into the third week of cycling my planted tank, but I have noticed some murky-looking substance at the top of my water level. I haven’t messed with the tank, outside of adding liquid fertilizer (Easy Green) a couple of times a week. Is this a sign I’m over-fertilizing my plants or something else? Also, would anyone be kind enough to tell me the state of my plants. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
  3. I was looking at the store and I'm just a bit confused!!! I am misremembering information from the older store descriptions or maybe just older plants that aren't carried. Can someone please help me to understand what these plants look like and how to handle them? The goal is to have a bit of a "bush" style plant in the big tank and then to propogate it out, then add it to the shrimp tank and let them have midwater stems and a bit of cover. Tiger Lotus vs Dwarf Red Lily Do they need root feeding / nutrients at the roots? Do they both get red? Do they both get same size? Do they both shoot pads to the surface? (I assume I can just cut them if need be or leave 1-2 of them.) Is there an issue if the pads get wet on the top surface? Any idea which one of them is used here? Thanks for the help. Feels so exciting/weird/nerve wracking to be diving into new species and especially types I've never kept! I'd enjoy hearing others experiences and issues with this plant. I am trying to find things that have the right size/scale among other factors. I need to order some more ferts here eventually and I always am eyeballing these two trying to decide which to try out. I'll add this, from the plant database website and it's basically the only real source of information I have. This is for the red tiger lily, but they don't have an article for the other one.
  4. I have a 5 gallon tank that I’m almost positive has an outbreak of Cyanobacteria (see pics below). Last night I moved the betta to his new setup (pre-planned) and dosed the tank with chemiclean the best I could since the directions are for a 10 gallon tank. Today I was thinking about how all I want from this tank is the sponge filter and the plants. The decorations will be cleaned and put away for another time, and I’ll probably just throw away the sand. I plan on sterilizing everything with peroxide. My question is….if I just scrub all the Cyanobacteria off of the plant, will it grow back and infect my other tanks? Is there a way for me to “sterilize” the plants without killing them? Any other tips on dealing with Cyanobacteria is appreciated.
  5. So I'm going to gut my 10 gallon planted tank today. Im removing the Fluval stratum and replacing with eco-complete. I have to carefully remove the plants without killing them. I have stems and bulbs. Any advice? My stratum is almost 2 years old and I believe its being problematic. I can't properly vacuum so it's getting gutted out.
  6. My dwarf aquarium lily (Nymphaea stellata) only seems to be producing stunted/tiny leaves instead of large ones with long stems. I have a red tiger lotus that seems to be fine, and other plants are doing well, but this one just doesn't want to grow. 😄 It's been in there for 6 months or so, and has never really done more than in the pictures. It's a bit back in a corner, so maybe it doesn't have enough light? Wouldn't that make the plant extend further instead of just sending up tiny leaves? I don't think it's a nutrient issue, but maybe? Do I need to nestle the bulb down in the substrate more (it got dug up by some snails and is almost on the surface)? Any ideas as to why it's so stunted?
  7. So around 2 weeks ago I planted some wisteria into my dirted tank. And before anyone tells me it’s transitioning into submerged growth, I’m pretty sure the few months it’s had at the LFS would tell otherwise. Anyways looking at the standard deficiency charts I can’t really pinpoint what it is. The main pictures are from my wisteria that also happens to be killing all its roots and stem under the substrate off, so that could tell something. But I’ve noticed a yellow brown tint on all my wisteria. What deficiency, or deficiencies is it? Also is some of my Ludwigia shaped a little weird. One stem has the leaves kinda curled. Oh and positive it’s not nitrogen (from the dirt and all).
