About Me

  1. This post was originally dedicated to my 35 gallon hexagon that I refurbished but I have decided that it is now the journal for my MTS journey! I hope you all find my MTS entertaining or aspiring as I grow my aquarium addiction! So I acquired an old 35 gallon hexagon aquarium from a friend that had been sitting empty and unused for quite a few years. The tank leaked, the stand had mold or mildew in the wood and was just over all in pretty rough shape. I stripped all the old silicon out and resealed the tank. Sanded and painted the rims. Sanded and sealed the stand with Killz and then painted it black. I replaced the old hinges with new stainless ones and added a matching handle. The tank did not come with a lid so I made a custom one from a plexiglass. Got it all scaped up. Now I'm waiting on the fish to arrive. Let me know what you think!
  2. Does any know if this is safe? I bought it, thinking it was Krylon Fusion for Plastic, which has been discontinued. Thanks for the help, really appreciate it. Andrew
  3. I have a sponge filter, with a bright white chimney. With the black background, it looks even whiter. Part of the issue is that my snails seem to be keeping it too clean. Do you know where I can find a black chimney, so that it blends in with the background?
  4. I got a cheap background and taped it up. One thing I didn't see in my original research 7 years ago when I started the tank was how to "properly" attach it. Or that you could get a great effect through painting. I'd like to swap it with a painted background. Probably just do black as my blue betta should pop more against that. Any recommendations on a brand of brush-able paint for an active aquarium? Or which type of paint I should look at? latex, or acrylic...other? Does the suggested paint change if the tank is new and not currently filled?
  5. I have spider wood that leaches tannins into the water. Can I paint the wood to minimize the leaching? And if so, what kind of paint. Also while I’m on the subject of paint. What kind of paint can I use for the back and side of my 75 gallon? I can’t paint it in the garage since it’s in the 30’s now most days.
  6. What is the rule of thumb when it comes to paint? I know Dean mentioned what he uses before in a video, but I can't find it now. I'm just looking to paint a filter intake. I know Krylon Fusion used to be recommended often, but I also understand that formula changed some time ago. I have Rust-oleum 2X on hand, which says it works on plastic. Is this ok, or do I need to shell out for something plastic specific like Tamiya? -Thanks
