About Me

  1. Today my quarantine gang has moved into paradise 🙂 They are enjoying a gentle sunrise there. I added black neons since my one lone wolf lost his buds to ick a few months ago. I also introduced a Bolivian ram which has an adorable personality. The usual gang are pristella tetras, a mystery snail named York (she's the "Big Apple"), and a zebra nerite snail named Hampshire. 29 gallons For plants we’ve got Java fern, Java moss, and micro sword.
  2. I like to feed my Bolivian Ram a sinking pellet. She has come to recognize that the aquascaping tongs bring her food to her. But within a minute or so of feeding the pellet, the tetras swarm in and steal it from her, then fight all over the tank with it. Now, I do feed the tetras flakes first to try to distract them. I also give the ram a new pellet if they steal it, but I'm wondering if there's a better way to feed her so that she doesn't feel like she has to fight them off? She kind of does a little charge at them when they are being jerks, not hurting them or touching them or anything, but warning them. They don't care and they steal the food anyway. Any suggestions? 5black neons 5 pristella tetras 1 bolivian ram 1 mystery snail 1 nerite snail
  3. I apologize for the crappy lighting, but after using oil paints and pastels, I decided to try out watercolors. Decided to paint a Bolivian Ram, as I have a beautiful pair that I’m trying to spawn. I don’t have any nerms to show this to IRL, so I thought I’d post this here! I’m thinking of painting either a Geophagus or Pangio species next. I’m only a high school student, so I’ll definitely need more practice, but I don’t think this is too bad of a start!
  4. One of my boys has had a sunken belly ever since I got him. I had him on quarantine for a few weeks because I wanted to beef him up before putting him in the main tank. I didn’t medicate when I was doing quarantine because all my males are tankmates at the LFS and the other three are doing amazing. The only difference with him is that his color improved and his fins look nicer but still with a sunken belly. I moved him back to my 5g hospital tank for now for meds I only have Kanaplex and Metroplex.
  5. I need help seeing these two Bolivian rams I got (at a different lfs then I usually go to. Made me realize that the closer/ smaller one is leagues better!) and they couldn’t sex them (also extra points to anyone who can find the clown pleco in the second photo!) If it helps any the first one is slightly smaller, the larger one chased it a lot and it hides because of that (I think, because it hides mostly in a cave like area, could just be determining hierarchy or breeding) I am willing to swap one if they are the same gender
  6. Nitrate 40, nitrite .5, ph 6.5, kh 40, gh 180, ammonia 0, temp 76. Bolivian rams which I've had for around three years in a 37 gal planted tank. I noticed recently white spot on both of the males eyes and one of the females eyes that he gets territorial with fairly often. The other female who he spawns with is fine. I've tried melafix and a coop med trio with the full dosage of maracyn and paracleanse only added the one time dose of ich-x at the beginning. No improvement yet so I came here. These pics were taken while they were asleep btw. Thanks in advance for any help!
  7. Would love some insight in trying to figure out if I am doing something wrong or if it was just luck of the draw. Would love for input on any corrections that should be made. I think I will be trying my hand one more time in ordering another bunch of Bolivian rams as I'd like a bigger group than just the 3. 8/25 - Received 6 Bolivian rams from Aqua Huna. Put them in my cycled 20gal QT tank which is bare bottom w/ a sponge filter, java fern, coconut shell and PVC pipe for hides. Started them on QT med trio. Ammonia - 0 Nitrate - 10 Nitrite - 0 GH - 300+ KH - 300 PH - 8.4 CL2 - 0 Temp - 80* After QT finished, started feeding fish extreme flake and nano pellet. Occasionally would give frozen brine and daphnia. I changed water every few days. Left fish in QT until 9/25. After the med trio I proceeded to lose 3 fish. About 1 a week. They were all colored nicely then suddenly got really grey, hide, and then swim like they were drunk and breathe rapidly. Almost looked neurological. No visible signs of issues on outside of body. They hugged the bottom of the tank and when they died they did not float to the surface. Water parameters in QT stabilized at: Ammonia - 0 Nitrate - 10-25 Nitrite - 0 GH - 300+ KH - 80 PH - 7.04 CL2 - 0 TDS - 552 Temp - 80* The 3 remaining rams are loving the planted 75 gal community tank. They are eating great and swimming all over. They are nice and bright in color and look to be feeling well. Picture attached. Tank Paramaters: Ammonia - 0 Nitrate - 10-25 Nitrite - 0 GH - 300+ KH - 120 PH - 6.91 CL2 - 0 TDS - 573 Temp - 80* Thank you for your help!
  8. I have 6 Bolivian Rams coming from Aqua Huna on Friday that will go through the med trio in my QT tank. After quarantine they will move into my 75gl community tank that currently has nerite snails, Amano shrimp, ottos, ember tetras, a couple young swordtails and one bala shark. I currently keep the tank @ 76* but can warm it up if needed. I have been doing my research on the Bolivian Rams, but I would love to get your insight too! Tell me all the things you know that I should know too! ***Also, at what age or size do they start spawning?
  9. I'm having trouble with my Bolivian Ram. About 3 months ago my ram became substrate bound and has been unable to swim without a lot of effort. It spends most of its time as it is shown in the picture below. I'm also a bit concerned about its stomach being rubbed along the sand so much. It is still active and will chase your finger around the glass. It eats quite a bit less than it did before getting sick but still eats. I keep the tank at 74 degrees and all the other fish have been doing well. It was the king of the tank so bullying has never been an issue. I attempted to treat with aquarium salt in a quarantine tank for about 3 weeks. I kept the dosage at 1 tbsp per 2 gallons. It seems like a swim bladder issue. Does this seem like a correct diagnosis? What can I do if anything? Thanks in advance!
  10. I got a pair of Bolivian Rams from the coop about a week ago. Suspected male/female pair. They've both been active and healthy until Saturday when I noticed the smaller (possible female) was sticking to just hanging out under the tiger lotus and wasn't eating as much. Yesterday/today she's just hanging out on the substrate there and isn't moving around much. The male is swimming around and active. All other species in the tank (pleco, corys, tetras, algae eater) are behaving normally. She's been fed brine shrimp and krill flakes both of which she was eating her fill of until this weekend. Water params seem ok, pH is around 6.9-7, 0 ammonia/nitrites, less than 5ppm nitrates. Fish does not seem discolored and is not breathing heavily, just not swimming much. Any ideas?
  11. Would Bolivian rams get along with honey gouramis, angelfish, lyretail mollies, L128 blue phantom plecos and vampire shrimp? I'm thinking about combining 2 55 gallon tanks with a 4" pipe. I was just wondering if anyone thinks this is a good or bad idea. Don't be mean, blunt is ok but I'm just trying to gather ideas for my future big and hopefully last tank(s).
  12. My 20 gallon long is going to be done cycling in the next week or two, I'm guessing/hoping. I had originally thought about doing platies with maybe cherry shrimp and/or cories. I've had platies and cories before, but never shrimp. Then, I was reminiscing about keeping bolivian rams and thought about keeping a ram or two with cories and/or tetras. Then, I saw a guppy tank from Primetime Aquatics. Things kept going down hill from there and now I can't decide on what and how many. I'm hoping someone can prevent me from making a horrid over stocking mistake. Would you keep in this planted tank: A.) 1 bolivian ram, 4 platies, 4 panda or pygmy cories B.) 2 bolivian rams, 6 neon or lemon tetras B.) 6 platies, cherry shrimp C.) 10 guppies (I don't know what I'd do with the babies, but they are so colorful) I really want to do option A, but I have a feeling that is too much for the tank? Guppies are in the mix in case I can't decide between platies and rams and go in a completely different direction 😄
  13. For a 45 gallon planted tank (36 long, by 20 high, and 16 wide. This is my tank. I have been adding rocks and making sure there are some nice hiding places. Have 6 Cories, 6 dwarf rainbow fish, 1 Bristlenose, & 6 Rummynose tetras. And may get a Pearl Gourami or Honey Gourami as a feature fish once plants grow in more (Love the Pearls, but thinking they may be too big). We are at the stage of picking a peaceful dwarf Cichlid as we love the personality.. I was almost set on Bolivian Rams, but then saw the the apistos. Who has Apistos or Bolivians? What do you have? What do you love about them or dislike about them? I am planning on getting a pair. Advice please:)
  14. Hi, all from the forum, Needing some advice as my Bolivian Ram laid eggs on the base of the tanks driftwood less than 20 minutes ago, It's the first time seeing the eggs so I'm not sure if they have been moving the eggs around the tank within the last couple of days or what - I didn't even notice any signs she (Queen Elizabeth) was pregnant 🤨 My question is as this will be my first time taking care of the fry, will my Bristlenose Catfish eat the eggs? Or will the Rams eat them? Will I need to remove them somewhere safe? I currently do not have any spare tanks until I purchase another one tomorrow......im freaking out 🥴
  15. I'm looking to add either Bolivian Rams, Scarlet Badis, or Pygmy Gouramis to my well planted Community tank. I currently have mostly tetras and guppies. Will any of these eat all the Guppy Fry? I like to have some survive, so I don't want to get something that will hunt down every last one. Thanks ahead of time for sharing your experience with these species. Also, are any of these compatible with adult shrimp?
  16. i have a 125g that's got about 25 mbunas and 10 peacocks one convict and a pleco and some snails. then i have a 75 planted with 4 angels and 6 bolivian rams and a few dif algae eaters including 2 bristle nose plecos. then i have a 10gal guppy tank where they been breeding 2 blue shrimp and overtaken with snails. i like Aquarium coop and all Corys videos. i just used quick start by api and added fish but ive been adding it every water chang only prob. i've had to ammonia spikes that was .5. ive just learned about keeping my cichlids KH and GH up and to regulate ph. look forward to learning and sharing with this forum thanks
  17. Hi all, I asked to my LFS 1 month ago to give me a male and female Ramirezi Gold, but to be honest it's so hard to see. What do you think? Sometimes they're chasing eachother so I do want to buy another female tomorrow.
  18. Do you think I could setup a 55 gallon community tank with Bolivian Rams and Apistogramma Cocatouities? There will also be other fish in there, but upon asking MANY different people, everyone has a different take on it. Even just searching the web gives different results! Has anyone here on the forums had any experience with this? I AM going to keep this tank for a long time, maybe 5 or 6 years. Edit: I also want to know if I can keep a male and female apisto and maybe a couple males and a couple females (totaling 8 Fish) Thanks!
  19. Hi this is my Bolivian Ram. It has really been getting colorful lately. I have been trying to figure out if it’s a boy or girl. I think it’s a girl based vent shape but I was wondering if anyone could help confirm that.
  20. I have a pair of bolivians in a 29 gal community, and they have spawned three times. First time was a dud, but the last two produced swimmers, but gradually over 3 or so days they all disappear. I just watched Dean's apisto breeding setup vid, and would that work for rams? Replace the caves with flat rocks, maybe another sight break?
  21. Hello, Would like your opinion on the sex of this young Bolivian Ram. It's starting to get some burgandy color on the ends of it's fins, which these photos don't show. It might be too young to sex. Thank you.
  22. Hello, I am thinking of adding a couple of Rams ro my community tank. Temp 82 and relatively brackish water. I love the look of both GBR's & Bolivian. I want something peaceful and hardy. Not looking into breeding them. And are they fin nippers? Which do you prefer and why? Thank you.
  23. I got these 3 fish together (quarter sized angel + 2 juvenile Bolivian rams) a few weeks ago and I'm impressed with how much the larger male has colored up. The angel (visible in video) has a pretty stubborn case of ich that showed up last week so the water is tinted a bit with Ich-X. This is my 29G quarantine tank and it has 3 Aquarium Co-Op sponge filters, an AquaClear 30, a 150W heater, and a ramshorn snail. It's a pretty weird setup but is working for this batch. My main long-term concern is that as the Bolivians have grown, it's grown evident that I have two males (small, pointed vents) and they've started sparring even with plenty of silk plants to block line of sight and I may not have enough room in my 50 hex for them to be happy.
