This post was originally dedicated to my 35 gallon hexagon that I refurbished but I have decided that it is now the journal for my MTS journey! I hope you all find my MTS entertaining or aspiring as I grow my aquarium addiction! So I acquired an old 35 gallon hexagon aquarium from a friend that had been sitting empty and unused for quite a few years. The tank leaked, the stand had mold or mildew in the wood and was just over all in pretty rough shape. I stripped all the old silicon out and resealed the tank. Sanded and painted the rims. Sanded and sealed the stand with Killz and then painted it black. I replaced the old hinges with new stainless ones and added a matching handle. The tank did not come with a lid so I made a custom one from a plexiglass. Got it all scaped up. Now I'm waiting on the fish to arrive. Let me know what you think! -

I suspect due to poor water quality and insufficient fertilization the plant I ordered lost all of its leaves over time. Now it looks like a series of "roots" but no leaves - is this plant dead or is there a way to revive it? -
I got two of these from Aquarium Co-Op, and was hoping they'd do well enough to grow some surface leaves/pads. Well, they must be real happy because they're thriving and sending up what at this point is too many. They're attractive but are shading out too much light. Do I just keep pruning them off?? I've had this banana plant since October 2020 and it had been doing (as far as I knew) just fine. About a month or two ago it started losing leaves, and had no new growth. It has been in the pictured state for a few weeks now without any leaves. It is in a 5 gallon planted tank I dose a liquid fertilizer (easy green) in about once a week. The "bananas" are firm and seem alive. I'm just wondering if it is salvageable at this point. Any info on what I could try would be appreciated. Thanks -
I recently added a couple small banana plants in my aquarium. Amusingly, my yoyo loaches seem to enjoy knocking them around the tank. Will they be OK? Is there something I need to do? I have fairly big gravel so I can't really secure it that way without burying the tubers too deep.

I currently have 2 banana plants, but they seem to be just surviving, and not so much thriving. I have gravel substrate and use easy green fertilizer. Would root tabs be better for them? They sprout new leaves that start out looking good and then just fizzle out. Then they will sprout more new leaves, shed the old ones, and then about 2 weeks later the newest leaves start to kinda wilt. Any ideas to help these little guys out?

Hi Forum: Well after help from Candi and the staff i have come to conclusion i can not grow these.plants after Candi sent a replacement for my first Banana Plant it still did`nt take well in my 20gal. thinking it might come back i left it new the tank..it began to grown a kinda green fine moss i din`t take it out at first thinking it was growth bot was i wrong..it grew this fine green moss like this moss consumed my tank it`s everywhere i`m still removing for the tank,it`s clinging to my plants that are in the tank in the gravel,on the tubing everything.. does anyone have any suggestions on the removal of this stuff?????? really could use the help here!!!! Hello! I bought a banana plant from aqaurium co-op and I didn’t know my plecos could eat them. I have dropped both banana plants in the tank and planted them a little. I have not noticed anything wrong with them yet but idk. Do you think my plecos will eat them or not? I also have 5 cories

It is often surprising to realize just how many of our aquarium plants are native to the United States and especially the Southeastern US. One of those exotic looking yet home grown plants is the lovely banana plant, Nymphoides aquatica. Found from New Jersey to Florida in ditches, still waters, and ponds it is one of my all time favorites. My first task was to locate where it could be found in North Carolina. I used my Manual of the Vascular Flora of the Carolinas to narrow the search down to specific counties. Craven County had a dot, and so was added to my itinerary for my aquatic plant collecting road trip. I thought surely I could not mistake banana plants for anything else, but you can never be too careful, so I brought my trusty, Godfrey and Wooten, Aquatic Plants of the Southeastern United States just to be sure. After several productive but non banana plant ditches I hit upon this site. Shazaam! Banana plants galore! Checking my Godfrey and Wooten for confirmation against what I was collecting I was sure I had success! Even a few baby banana plants. The eternal question always is: What do plants want? Knowing where and how they grow natively in the wild would go a long way towards answering this question, so I was determined to make observations and take measurements. Here was the temperature This is the water chemistry No nitrates, no GH, no KH and a very low pH. Surprisingly there seems to be a bit chlorine, but whatever the source, I guarantee it did not come from a water treatment plant as I was in a very remote unspoiled location. The substrate was 3 inches of mulm, over a couple inches of mud, over a sandy bottom. Most plants were firmly rooted all the way into the sand in about 1 to 3 feet of water. Some plants had lily pads nearly the size of my hand. Smaller plants on runners or nearer shore had more bananas. Some plants were flowering with delicate white flowers floating just above the surface of the water. I collected a handful of plants and headed quickly home to the 1930s Historically Accurate Planted Aquarium as these would be a very authentic addition!- 32 replies

why are my banana plants turning purple? -
I bought the beautiful banana plant a few months ago and love it. Just lately it has been floating, I put it back down and the next day it is floating again. Can anyone tell me why this is happening now? -

I am new to plants and would like to know some good resources for identifying deficiencies. I think that this one in particular is a magnesium deficiency. I have started to dose weekly with Easy Green. Should I snip these leaves off at the base? -
I have had this plant for almost a month now. One pant leave melted and a new one came back. Now I have one turning brown and the bananas at the bottom seem dark compared to what I have seen in other peoples pictures. Is this normal? -
I know not the best photos but any helpful hints on these plants?? They will look great then stop. Aquenon LED light is on 12hours. Zero algae and some plants are two weeks old so they are trying to get established. I’m not good with plant names. I know the potted plants are not new and the bananas aren’t either. I have eco complete substrate, use easy green maybe once every few weeks, and have iron rich well water. I can never tell what I am missing, even though I heavily research it. Seems like I am missing something or maybe I am just impatient?? -
So ive heard of multiple different way to propogate bannana plants but im skeptical about them. Such as cutting off a leaf and letting it float or dutting the bulb in half. Are these viable options or not?
