  1. What are your experiences with keeping a bristlenose pleco in a tank with Amazon swords? I heard that they will rasp at the leaves, but I also heard that if fed enough plant material (veggies, Repashy) the damage is minimal. I'm ok with some nibbling, but I'd like to know if my swords are in danger of being destroyed. I feed Soylent Green, but I'm happy to switch to other foods. I can also just keep my bristlenose in a sword-free tank, but I originally got it to go in the 75 that I just recently moved my giant sword to.
  2. My Amazon sword has melting leaves and holes. It’s been in the tank about a year. I use the all in one fertilizer. My Java fern is also looking the same. What can I do?
  3. First planted aquarium. I clearly didn't buy enough plants for the 60. Got some rocks I found along the road for decor. (tested safe) Hoping they all survive. Got some dwarf baby tears and water sprite coming soon. Anubias will be planted in an easy planter.
  4. How long should I let the runner go before cutting it off and moving the little plants to a different tank? There are 6 small plants now.
  5. Hello everyone, I just stopped by a LFS for some more plants and came upon a plant they seem to think it’s in the Anubias family that looks like an Amazon sword? I ended up purchasing it because I was intrigued like I said it kinda looks like a sword but with thicker anubias feeling leaves. Anyone have an ideas on type/ name?? I’ll take a picture once I have a chance. Thank you in advance!!
  6. I currently have a 10g tank heavily planted and purchased plants from my local fish store. I have two Amazon swords (one is a red flame) and they produce leaves weekly. That being said I have replaced them in the substrate several times because the roots cannot seem to grow. I have had the tank for 3 months and have fed the swords heavily (3/4 easy root tabs per month) and am wondering if the scuds are eating the roots. Had anyone else had this experience? I am debating starting the tank all over in a 30 long with new substrate and replacing my filter sponges along with heavily cleaning my decorations. thoughts?
  7. I've had this plant for a year and at first had it planted in substrate but almost died kind of glued it to a piece of lava rock and it started to grow back rather well never got the name as it was a gift so im trying to figure how big it will get currently in a 5 gallon nano thanks all
  8. I bought 2 Amazon Swords in January of this year. It's now the middle of March and they haven't grown much. They're maybe an inch or 2 taller. My ph is 7 and KH & GH are 70ppm (ish). I use Seachem Flourish regularly. I have also used root tabs. They get plenty of light as well. Any ideas why they won't grow?
  9. Hello! I can’t find any info on where on the stem should I cut off the new plant never done this before? another question is, is my little plant ready to be cut off and planted? last question, when I do cut the plant off will another start to propagate?? thank you!!
  10. bought All Plants i bought from aquarium coop. This a newly established aquarium 29 gallon. its 21" tall ,24 wide ,12"deep Water parameters. Temperature :around 76F HRPH: 8.2 ammonia: 0-.25 nitrite: 0 nitrates: 40-80 GH: 0 KH: its high.. i don't know I use stress coat to condition tap water for changes, and let the water sit in a bucket for a few days. (Sorry about the cloudy water in photo.Doing a water change today. Just recently added 5 cory cats and had a bacterial bloom then my son accidentally turned off my sponge filter for a few hours i didn't know. 😮 So the plants Looked good on arrival, They got caught in that recent snowstorm somewhere during transit, but still arrived looking nice. (Props to aquarium coop for awesome shipping.) I Use the easy green and iron. Java Fern: I glued them to rocks and plants weights ,started having black spots in a few days now almost completely blackish brown now. Amazon sword: Planted in substrate with root tabs. leaves turned yellow in a few days, now almost see-through and brownish yellow. but the shoot still green. Micro grass: planted in substrate just melted and disappeared gone. Water sprite : planted but just melted and disappeared vanished. banana plant and moss ball are ok it seems. Running a brand new finnex 24" low light led. on a timer (i know micro grass is high light but thought it might ok.) Lots of money Not much success. And frustrating Would it better to condition my water for plants or just find plants that can handle my water conditions? (high ph and such) If so what plants would that be? ..I have a water softener system for my house that i use the tap water for tanks. And a separate r.o. system for drinking water. my ph runs high. Talk to me.
  11. At what point do I propagate and what is the process? I have a few different tanks in the process of being set up and eventually I want to move some plants from this tank and my 75 over. Right now they are only a quarter full as I try to get dwarf baby tears to carpet. Thank you
  12. I bought this plant about 8 months ago from pet smart as an amazon sword plant but it has not grown taller than about 4 inches but has grown to about 10 inches wide, i dose about once every 2 weeks with liquid ferts and add root tabs about once a month, could it be a lighting issue that is making it so this plant isnt growing taller or is it actually not an amazon sword i was led to believe that they grow fairly tall.
  13. I have a swordplant (Amazon sword?) that has been established in my tank for approx 3 years. I learned back in September of last year that it really needed root tabs, and once I started doing that it REALLY took off. However, I'm disappointed that I haven't been seeing any runners or "baby" swordplants. I did a decent size pruning last weekend due to all the shade it was creating, and hoped it would spur healthy new growth, but I'm not seeing anything new (might be a little too early to tell though.) Is there anything specific I can do to encourage propagation? I saw on a different thread someone recommended cutting the rosette into two and then voila, two plants. I am hesitant to take that approach because it is so happy and well rooted in the tank. Any tips? I give it Easy Green Root tabs every few weeks and dose the tank with Easy Green (mainly for other plants' benefit.) Note about the pic: the plant is not rooted in that rock, it is just behind it. Poor perspective.
  14. I have been wanting to remove the amazon sword from my 40 gal. breeder. It's got so big and is creating a little too much shade. Have any of you grown them in a tub outdoors? How cold can they go? I've started saving some plants that I'd normally throw away when I do tank maintenance. I plan to use them in my tubs when the weather gets a little warmer.
  15. this thread is for talking about and showing of your sword plants I have several questions how tall/big do red flame swords get?
  16. I’m getting re-started in the hobby after many years and decided to try live plants, which I’ve never tried before. My newly planted Amazon Sword is developing brown spots, but is putting out a nice runner with a baby plant that looks very healthy. Are these signs that the mother plant is dying? Is the plant too close to the air stone?
  17. I am changing my mind. I was thinking about doing a 90 gallon angelfish tank, but I recently have fallen in love with geophagus red heads. I have 2 large amazon swords and I want to add them in the tank. I was wondering if the geophagus would just rip up the plants.
  18. My amazon sword sent up a long stem a couple weeks ago - I thought it was going to flower, but I've since learned that it'll use this to reproduce. I currently have 5 'babies' on the stem with roots about 1/2" long. Tiny little leaves can also be seen. How long should I let them go before cutting/planting them? This is my first planted tank (75gal) - currently low tech (but I've been researching CO2 - can't decide between pressurized systems or using a 'mid-tech' CO2 generator (baking soda and citric acid) to get better growth. The plants have been in place for about a month - other than the sword - the others haven't done much. I've just added a better light (Nicrew Sky + and a timer) and have been fertilizing with leaf zone (which I've just found isn't great). Thanks everyone! Shawn.
  19. Ive had this sword for about a month and a half. It started to melt back, which was expected. The new growth leaves were sprouting out and growing extremely well, until about 2 weeks ago (1 month in tank). I suspected it had already eaten all of the root tabs (2) I placed underneath it. So, I added to more directly under it. Now the plants leaves are looking black, but it doesn't look like the black beard algea I have seen. I also watched all of the nutrient deficiency videos, and this doesn't seem like any of it unless I'm missing something. l I use API root tabs, dose 3 ml of seachem flourish every 3 days, and api c02 booster 4 ml every day. Water is 76-77 degrees, GH ~75 ppm, PH 7.0, near 0 Nitrates/nitrites. 36 gallon tank. I have a 27 w led about 9 inches above the tank, assuming each light is 1 watt?? 18 inch deep tank.
  20. Hey everyone, My Amazon Swords were not looking too good, so a few weeks ago I gave each of them a single root tab. I am seeing a bit of a rejuvenation but not as much as I would like. Should I wait a while before using more root tabs or go ahead and provide the Amazon Swords with more root tabs now? I used Flourish tabs.
  21. My amazon sword plant appears to be growing but the leaves are drooping. I add liquid CO2 to the tank which the Java fern loves but I dont know what could be wrong with the amazon sword. Any ideas ? Thank you !!
  22. I was wondering if anyone knows what my Amazon sword is up to? Based on non aquatic plants, to me it looks like a flower spike.. it's growing really fast... I'd guess 1-2 inches a day. Is there anything I need to do? Like more/less light? I'm assuming it must be happy 😃 I'm so excited by it, even if I don't know what it is!
  23. Hello everyone! Looking for some plant advice. 2 tanks with issues. I have holes in some of my plant leaves. Amazon sword in one tank and Java Fern in another. I’ve read that it could be potassium? Or lighting? The java fern leaves are worse. They look like they are being torn apart. I use easy green and root tabs (for the sword) and have Fluval 3.0 lights. Both are 29 gallon aquariums. Neither plant is new. Had them both for about 1 year.
