  1. I have 2 Amazon puffers I got from someone locally almost 4 weeks ago. They were doing well originally in the 10 gallon quarantine tank I have for just them and a sponge filter. I noticed a couple white dots so I did ich-x and daily water changes and they looked better in 4 days. Then all of a sudden they were completely covered in white spots, too many to count. I continued the ich-x and this time added 1TBS salt (replacing about 1 tsp after each 30% water change), and Maracyn because their fins looked a little torn up. With no signs of improvement after 3 days I added paraclense too. So they are on the Med trio now and I upped the temp to 80 and covered the top of the tank so it’s not as bright. Their fins are really clamped and they have been itching themselves on the bottom of the tank. Now one of them hangs out near the top of the tank vertically with tail up and did not eat. I’m really unsure what to do now and don’t want to lose them. Please any suggestions. <5 nitrates 0 nitrite 0 ammonia 150 gh 40 kh 6.8 ph 80* F (The white stuff in the photo is meds I just put in)
  2. For folks with amazon puffers in particular, the internet will have you expecting to trim their teeth every six months. Is this something that should be done prophylactically? Or only if one has a problem eating? I feed them snails regularly -- though I'm not always able to get snails small enough so they often just yank the snail out of the shell rather than crunching down. I see one (out of my group of 6) in particular that has a fairly long tooth, but he/she can still eat fine. My instinct is to not do anything as long as the fish can still eat to avoid inflicting unnecessary stress on the animal, but wondering what other puffer keepers do in practice.
  3. Has anyone kept Amazon puffers with a spotted Congo puffer? Curious if they could get along. Generally speaking I know all fish can have somewhat different temperaments
  4. How do I stop amazon Puffer glass surfing. They eat well. No sign of health issues. 6 puffer in 75 gallon. When I'm infront of tank they come to eat and whenever finished eating goes right back glass surfing. Goes up and down in side glass. Thanks.
  5. I am geting a amazon puffer VERY SOON and I was wondering how to de worm a puffer I was also seeing what you guys think about Amazon puffers and apistos.

  7. I bought amazon puffers about a week ago. They go ick (I assume) almost immediately. Ichx wasn't doing much at all, so I stopped ich x and I did round of API General Cure and API Erythromycin. Now they look worse than ever. I have resumed Ich x but I'm concerned (perhaps overly) that it's something else and perhaps I should be doing something else. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.
  8. I have been looking for Amazon puffers for a while, requesting special orders at all three fish stores in my town and suddenly one store got them and I bought four (4) for my 40 Breeder and I have some questions. First, I have read all the posts I could find here and watched every youtube video I could find before I bought them and I'm aware they need to be medicated. My question is, I didn't have a dedicated quarantine tank when I bought them, so they are in the 40B already. Should I pull them out to medicate them? Can I simply medicate the 40B? Second, in my research I know they adapt to pretty wide parameters but as I've kinda fallen in the love with them, what are the "ideal" parameters (esp temp)? Anyone know what the parameters are like in their native environment? Thanks.
  9. After waiting a few months for him to come into my LFS I finally got my amazon puffer. He is doing well but he's way too small to eat snails right now 1-1/2". His main food right now has been daphnia which he loves to hunt for. Any ideas what I should I should to try and feed to wear down his teeth till he grows up.
  10. Hello recently ive really been thinking about an amazon puffer for my 29 gal. Finding ones not the problem but im concerned it wouldn't do well in my water 8.4 ph Max's out the gh and kh test kit. Anyone who has had a puffer in super hard water with a high ph what was your experience? Thanks
  11. This tank has been up and running just over 2 months, 55 gal, substrate is a mixture of ecocomplete, gravel, and sand, planted with about 10 Java fern bunches, Java moss, 3 banana plants, 2 dwarf aquarium Lily bulbs. Temp is currently at 78, ammonia, nitrites are 0; nitrates are <10 (I’ve always had trouble getting nitrate levels even to a readable level in this tank). currently stocked with 3 Amazon puffers. I have this white bio-film, or fungus recurring, even after scrubbing it off a couple times. At first it was just on the drift wood and now it’s covering the moss. im less worried about the aesthetic, but will it choke out the Java moss? I can scrub it off the wood with a toothbrush, but how do I manually remove it from the moss? Using shrimps and snails to remove it is not really an option bc of the puffers. Thanks in advance!
  12. He has been slowly getting more and more brown spots for almost 2 weeks, and has white spots that I Thought were ich, but I slowly turned the temp up to 86°F and for the fist week I was doing a 30% water change and dosing ich-x once every 12 hours, now it's every 24, and it has been getting a little better and then the next day it's a little worse, and it just keeps going up and down for the last 2 weeks, I have absolutely no idea what it is, again I don't think it's ich because it should of cleared up in like 5 days. Does anyone know what it can be, and how to treat it, I have loads of different meds. My parameters are: Ammonia- 0ppm Nitrite-0ppm Nitrate->5ppm GH- 100ppm KH-40ppm PH- 7 Temp at 86°F, I normally keep it at 79°F Edit: the only thing I can think of is that it's a REALLY bad case of ich and the "brown spots" are just bruises from him bubbing on some lava rock I have in there
  13. I've had my amazon puffer for 3 weeks and he's been doing great, he shares a tank with 2 dwarf puffers, I've raised them with many different fish in the last 7 months so I thought it would be okay to keep them in their... I'm not sure if if the white circles on him are some sort of fungal/bacterial infection, or just puffer bites? Does anyone know or might be able to help. I've been doing E.M. Erythromycin and ich X for 4 days now with no improvements, I'm going to tank out the pea puffer and see if he improves this week EDIT: my water parameters are , Ammonia- 0ppm Nitrite-0ppm Nitrate-5ppm Ph-6.9 Kh-20ppm Gh-100ppm Temp-79°F
  14. I just got done cycling a 75 gallon tank. I added White Cloud Mountain minnows to help cycle the tank and so I had something to look at. I think I have finally decided I want a community tank with Amazon Puffers. I figure I will either have to move the minnows to their own tank or find a new home for them. I am also starting a 10 gallon tank for a snail colony to feed the puffers with. I am looking for advice about Amazon puffers What fish have you found are good tank mates? What disease should I look out for? Besides snails what else are good food? THANKS!
  15. I am wondering if SAPs will kill snails for fun or just to eat. I have heard with pea puffers will eat their fill then kill every snail in the tank for sport. Is this true and does the South american puffer do the same? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
  16. Any suggestions about Amazon puffers window surfing?
  17. Hi, I am thinking about getting an Amazon puffer fish for my fish tank I currently I have a 62 gallon bow front tank with a Texas cichlid 4 small red parrots and 2 small severums, they aren’t tiny small but just not big big yet idk how to explain it. However would it be a good idea to get the Amazon puffer. The tank may be bigger than 62 gallons I’m confused with the bowfront measurements.
  18. I just impulse bought an Amazon Puffer (I know, I know). Figuring out the best option for him/her after they get out of quarantine. I currently have an empty 20 Hex that I could put them with dithers in it but that seems a little small. I have a 55 gallon tank but it has angels and black/dalmation mollys so I think he would be out competed. I have an 80 gallon Guppy Tank (4' L x 2' W x 1' H) that is heavily planted with lots of rock and decor that I think would be a better fit and since it is a breeding tank there are plenty of snails to munch on and things to explore. Is this a bad idea?
