About Me

  1. Hello all! My name is Steven Chong-- found my way here from the Youtube channel and wanting to say hi! I live in Tokyo, but originally come from the United States, my home state is Hawaii. But I still represent the US in the International Aquatic Plant Layout Contest, with competitive planted aquarium design being my main hobby. This is my tank from this year, but in the last 3 years I have been fortunate enough to find myself in the top world rankings. I look forward to making a simple journal thread, and meeting many of you. Take it easy! 😄
  2. So....bear with me. I don't know how ignorant this question is. I am making my first aquarium this week. My husband and I have watched about 15 hours of YouTube videos from AquariumCoop and I don't know if this is such a simple question that it doesn't seem to be a problem, but I just wanted to double check that I can get plants from different areas of the world and put them all in the same tank....as long as they get proper light, fertilizer, and the water is balanced properly with bacteria, nitrate, CO2 etc....they will all be okay.....is this the right assumption?
  3. I saw somewhere, not sure where now that you can clip wisteria back and back and it will spread as a carpet. Is this practical and has anyone tried it? I've got some in one of my 10g and it's growing really well. I would like a carpet (ground cover) without having to resort to CO2 and I like the look of wisteria quite a bit.
  4. Hi everyone! I am planning to aquascape a 5 gallon, 10 gallon, 25 gallon, 35 gallon, 75 gallon, and a 175 gallon. Does anyone have any ideas or recommendations? These tanks would have non plant disturbing fish. I have plenty of ideas but I want to hear yours first. Thanks in advance!
  5. I’ve had some unexpected aquatic plant successes and wondered what you all have seen. I was propagating some pothos in a tank and got lazy and it fell fully in and I left it because who doesn’t want to feed snails? Lo and behold it started sprouting smaller, slightly differently shaped leaves fully submerged. I have started throwing it into my outdoor tubs and the loose floating/submerged stems don’t rot. I guess pothos truly never dies. Similarly, I took cuttings of a raspberry bush in my yard and put them in a foam holder/aquaponics cup suspended in my pond. They grew great roots but also have fully submerged leaf growth that looks very healthy. Now to get not-lazy and actually plant them somewhere. What pleasant surprises or failed experiments have you had?
