  1. I was actually reading an interesting article about U.V sterilizer and it made a lot of sense imo. The article was saying that those U.V. sterilizer don't affect your bacteria's noticeably. Reason being that your bacteria's don't live in the water column. The live on surface of all the things you have in your aquarium, on the plants, woods, rocks, decorations, windows of the aquarium and most importantly in your filter media. Was saying that the reason it was so efficient to avoid algae spread, was because those algae spore travel in the water column. So using U.V. will kill all the spores and the fish virus that travel through the water column. And wont affect the bacteria that are good for the aquarium.
  2. I saw someone here mentioning some brand of light cheaper then the Fluval 3.0 I used the light guide on coop webpage, they recommend 4 light for mine cause its 125g. You dont want to see the bill lol. I wish I had seen that post about cheaper and better light before lol. But what I like about the Fluval is the customization you can do ! I already see a difference on the cuba carpeting plants!
  3. @Minanora very nice. I have a few reds as well, I was reading to keep them red tho they need more iron 🙂
  4. Hello All, I was watching some stuff from Cary about Air Stone. My understanding is that it is false to assume air stone are bad for CO2 injected tanks because in the air we breath there is CO2 and its being injected also from the Air stone. Did I get that right ? Should I leave my air stone on 24/7 then ? Its setup a low intensity so it does very small and fine bubbles. Also how much surface agitation is require, what is too much, or is their a too much ? Water agitation in general, I just repositioned my CO2 diffuser, its connected inline with a water pump so that the CO2 dissolve better in the water, I moved it more to the center of my 125g because one end CO2 sensor was greener then the other end sensor because the aquarium is 5 feet long. Now instead of facing the length of the aquarium which is 5 feet, its facing the width which is 2 feet I believe. By doing so it is creating a lot more water agitation in general ( not the surface), I can see the plants leaves moving around now pretty much everywhere in the aquarium. I put it center of the aquarium using a diffusing bar that was coming with an old filter I had. so the jets hits the opposite wall of the aquarium bouncing off it. Is that a bad thing, is it better if the water is moving less ? Thanks in advance for your comments
  5. You mentioned banana tree, just got one a few days ago, can you send a pic of yours please. Do you know how big they get. Sorry I dont know what those are btw. Look like some sort of shrimp
  6. I honestly have no idea, sorry, I go to the local store, look at what they have and if I see something I like I read the little sticker see if it will grow in my setup and buy it. Next time I go, I will try to remember and look it up for you.
  7. Here's what my 125g looks like now after the black out. Too bad I didn't take pictures before !
  8. It depends on the light really and on the power of the UPS you are using. A pump doesn't require much power, so it could run days. Mine is a tripp lite 1500VA/900W. I will check it out tonight, I think the LCD display tells me how long it will run under full load !
  9. I don't see why the article is incomplete or misleading. The article doesn't say it is safe for the fishes it says the following: nitrate is considerably less toxic. Less toxic to me at least means it is still toxic but less toxic then ammonia and nitrite. I don't see how it could be misleading really. It also says the following : However, little research has been done to determine how toxic nitrate is to all of the different animals we can keep in our aquariums. I think that covers up pretty much the fact that the article is incomplete to you My understanding of the Aquarium CO OP community is that it is meant to share and help each other by answering questions, sharing our experience or bring new information's. I think that instead of criticizing the work of others, your energy could be better spent bringing more information to the discussion that would add value to it. Regards, John
  10. @Minanora I try to avoid chemical as much as possible. I use snail to get ride of my snails lol. I have a bunch of killer snail snails and they are also very pretty ! It keeps snail population at bay, you should look into them 🙂
  11. Yeah in order to work a black out, it need to be pitch black in the aquarium, no light at all. I also changed one of my sponge in my filter for a week after I cleaned the aquarium. I put an extra fine one in order to catch all the tiny brown deal algae particules. And all my regular plants survived, none died by the way. It helps a lot also if you have algae cleaning crew. I have Ottocinclu, Shrimps and siamensis.
  12. Hello, For power outage I personally a Backup UPS, all my aquarium equipment is plugged in to it. Hope this help,
  13. Hello, I don't have as much experience as most of the posters here, but I had a similar problem with my tank recently 🙂 I found an article that was talking about total blackout, so I gave it a try. (it wont kill your plants or your fishes, well it didn't kill mine) I removed what I could manually, cover my whole 125gallons with2 layer of industrial black garbage bags, top to bottom and let it in the dark for 4 days. Also added a air stone. I fed the fishes once every 2 days. In the morning of the 5th day I removed all the bags and all algaes were dead. I read some people doing it for up to 6 days, but I was too afraid. It made my tank full of dead brownish algaes all over, brushed off all my glass and plants and did a 50% water change. What ever was left, my ottocinclus and amano shrimps too care of it 🙂 Hopefully now after reading alot more about planted tank it wont happen to me again lol 🙂
  14. Hello My name is John, I am from Montreal, Canada. I stumble on your youtube channel looking for tricks, tips on Hight tech planted aquarium and really liked the peanut butter M&M video on aquarium cycle 🙂 I have a 125 gallons with an overkill Fluval FX 6 filter ( wish I came across your youtube channel a month earlier 🙂 ). I had some issue with my setup and felt to the bigger is better trap. When I see with what you run your huge aquarium I want to cry, but what is done is done 🙂 I recently saw some nice aqua scaping youtube video and loved the green cuba carpet and live plants. So being the impulsive guy with nothing better to spend money on, I got a full CO2 system with solenoid and time etc etc .... You can imagine that it didnt go as planned lol, Its been quite an adventure. From green algea to hair ones, to leaf decay (turning brown and dies). I had to do a total blackout of my aquarium to get ride of the algae's lol. Learned alot in the process, last weekend replanted the aquarium following some of Cory's tips and tricks about fertilizing and all. Hopefully it will work out for the best 🙂 P.S. All my aquarium lights are off, will take pics and post them in the coming days. Thanks
