  1. Rearranged my son's tank, cleaned it some, water change, and got some plants in order.
  2. So I've had a lot of shrimp breading in my tank lately. I'm around 26 of these shrimp. I think they are the above mentioned species I guess. Can anyone shed some light? I've had red ones show up, yellow, mostly brown.. the browns are fairly dark, but bellies still see through. Some are staying very see through, similar to the 1 obvious amano I have left. I have a female walking around now with babies soon to come with more.
  3. So I have about 10-12 amano shrimp in our ten gallon planted tank. They seem to do very well and are frequently active. They do hide and I just noticed a new shrimp I've never seen before. Now all of the shrimp that went into this tank have at least started looking like a standard amano; being translucent and spotted. 2 have been darker color, but one of those darker ones must have turned into this one while hiding away. Anyone see anything like this or know what kind of shrimp it is?
  4. I understand, but your cycle isn't strong enough for whatever is giving off the ammonia. In my case it turned out to be something in the substrate. I weakened my cycle with the meds, yes, but ultimately, if ammonia cannot be taken out or reduce with water changes, then there's a source in the water.
  5. You might look over my thread I started. I had a similar ammonia problem, I go over everything I did and I finally came out successful. Something is overloading your cycle if the bacteria and plants can't come back. Have you gravel vac'd to ensure all food and junk are out? Even looking clean, my water after gravel vacing it was disgusting!
  6. Welp, I finally have success. I decided to use prime, and I also changed bacterias I was using to a bottle of tetra plus I found at the local shop. I ended up picking up a ornament I hadn't moved yet on the final water change when I did these two new products..I found a large amount of something rotted there, whether it was food, a shrimp maybe I lost track of, I'm not sure. I gravel vac'd that last area, did the water change and left it for two days. The first day, I was already down to only 1ppm. The 3rd day, I did another water change, about 30% I'd say. Added those products again, let it sit two days. The 3rd day I had no ammonia. No nitrites and my nitrates going back up to my normal 20-40ppm after about 6 days. My plants are all coming back huge and healthy, and the fish are doing well. All but an otto, he's been hiding in a cholla cave. I moved it and he comes out and swims and looks fine, but then finds his way back there. Hoping he recovers. I also have 1 shrimp left that actually molted the other day. So it must be feeling comfortable with the way the water is also.
  7. For real. I just don't understand. It's a small tank, there's nothing in there any different than it's been for months. I have my hang on back filter with a sponge intake..on the inside I have course sponge, filter floss, and a bag of bio media. About two weeks ago now I just rung that stuff out because I thought maybe there was a lot of food or something in it causing the ammonia spikes.
  8. That's what I've been figuring. It's just not making sense to me that over night I go from .5-1ppm to 8ppm the next morning. Seems every water change I do only helps for a very short time and Ammonia is setting right back in and taking over. I don't see anything in the tank that could be causing my ammonia. I gravel vac'd every bit of the floor. I've got algae growth now on things. But no change in Ammonia. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.
  9. No fish, but I did have a shrimp disappear. I removed the bigger ornaments and found lots of gross debris under them in gravel. I gravel vac'd the whole floor, moved plants around, for every inch of the bottom, all while doing about a 50% change tonight. I trimmed away obvious dead plants and only kept the strong ones. I put the ornaments back in and we'll see what happens tomorrow. Seems good with ammonia at only maybe .5-1 ppm right now.
  10. Well, I've had it maybe 7 months now. Like I said, it was thriving until I decided to try the meds for a bacterial infection. My cycle was great, no ammonia, no nitrites, and nitrates at a good solid level feeding the plants basically, with weekly, to bi weekly 25% water changes to lower the nitrate if it got to high. I just don't know where the ammonia could be coming from now. I didn't change anything.
  11. My other parameters are good. I have no nitrite or nitrates rn, except the easy green in adding to try and keep plants alive. Ph's are normal. Is like the tank is cycling all over again after maracyn treatment. But I've never had Ammonia get this high ever. I've lost two fish and all but one of my amano shrimp now.
  12. So, long story short, I had a bacterial infection in a fish, treated with maracyn product from the co-op. About a week after treatment I noticed the fish looking poor. Checked levels and my ammoina had been through the roof ever since. It'll top 8ppm and I'll do 50% water changes, daily with little to no change. The tank is planted and was thriving before this happened. At this point I'm not sure what could be causing it. There's no dead fish, no real rotting plants.. some have been doing poorly because of the water conditions I think, as well as the water changes. I have a lexan cover I made for my light, it has metal hinges in the middle to open.. this was for my light to be able to shine through for my plants, and idk if maybe it's a coincidence and the lexan or hinge rust could be all of a sudden tainting my water? There's tiny amounts of rust I see around the hinges that I suppose could be dropping into the water. However I gain about 2-4ppm over night. Thoughts on this theory? At this point should I unplant the tank, gravel vac big time, and re-plant? I'll attach some photos of my setup for visuals of what I'm talking about. These were all pictures before hand.. all the plants are looking pretty terrible now, browning, the stem plant in middle has holes throughout the leaves, losing leaves.. and very small leaves growing out top. Any help would be appreciated.
  13. Bump! Can anyone give me any pointers? I'm doing 30-50% water changes and every day the ammonia is back up to 4-8ppm. I have no idea how my fish are putting up with it still. Been using Ammonia lock from Tetra during water changes. I've done morning and night. Not feeding. I have live plants, cholla wood, and a few ornaments that have been in there forever. All the pieces have, nothing is new. I did the maracyn treatment and ever since I've been dealing with this. I've never seen ammonia this high even when new. I'm not sure how to figure out the cause at this point without messing up the ecosystem more by taking a things out.
  14. What types of things can randomly start leeching ammonia? I'm having a similar problem where water changes are not helping my ammonia problem. I'm currently at about 4ppm and trying 20-40% water changes.. I have the same pieces in my tank that I've always had. Some quality made tank deco, plants, cholla wood.. my problem started about a week after I had done a maracyn treatment for a bacterial infected fish that ultimately died anyways. Thoughts?
  15. That was my initial thought, however I've gravel vac the best I could around the plants and got I'd say 85% and I've done that a few times, I'm a month into this with it not cycling.
  16. So I've had my tank for about 6 months now, planted and it's been doing great. One of the fish got a disease, so I did the maracyn treatment. The fish still ended up dying, and then about a week after the treatment and water changes, I got an ammonia spike. Ever since, I've been doing 1/2 water changes, no food, gravel vacuum. Every day it gets worse and now my plants are also dying. The past few days the water is getting very cloudy. I water changes last night and woke up this am with the water so cloudy you can barely see the back of the tank. I'm at a loss and don't know what I'm doing wrong. The tank was cycled and thriving before I did the meds. I don't understand what could be causing my ammonia to spike higher each day. I went from 1ppm, to 8ppm in less than 36 hrs. I have a hang on back filter, with a custom filter. Sponge intake, sponge inside, filter floss, and then a bag of bio media. I cleaned this in old tank water about 5 days ago, thinking it might be food and waste built up in filter causing the ammonia. I've never had a spike this high even when the tank was brand new. I tested my water going in from tap. No ammonia. What should I do next? Thank you. This picture is a few weeks ago when my tank was thriving and plants were doing amazing. Now they're rotting away, and barely holding on anymore.
