I have WCMM in my 29 and 20.... moved them back and forth. I also have cherry barbs in my 75g.
Cherries = they stay low, they want cover. There's literally nothing else in the tank and barbs in general want things around them... things to swim through. That is what would determine where they are, being how tall is the hardscape and plants.
WCMM = they just don't care. They are everywhere around the tank, midwater. they sleep low, feed up top.-

My anubias recovery journey..... it took YEARS and it wasn't as simple as just doing one thing. I would get the plant to grow, then the BBA would come back. I would get new growth, then it would die off. Substrate changes, tank changes, lighting, even nutrient changes... here we are. 2 years apart.
I still need to go through my 29G and break it down. One of the older females from the colony. She's just enjoying her day. 🙂
I keep trying to let the babies grow for sorting, but then there's more and more. The tank is doing well, but I just NEED to get these sorted and genetics under control.

I am in the middle of breaking down my 29G and moving it into a 20Long! I much prefer the "longer" look visually. Both are great, I loved the 29, but I am switching back to a 20L for a variety of reasons. Plant depth being one of the big ones. It's a lot easier when the tank is longer + shallower to do a lot of things.
If you want a ~20G tank and you want something slightly bigger, I would just recommend getting a 60G when you can and go from the 20L into the 60GOn 9/17/2024 at 1:29 PM, rydin4life said:hillstream loach to this as well and am considering upgrading to a 29 gallon.

The issue in mine was circulation + about 100 other things and the substrate just loved to make funky things grow. It was seachem fluorite black. It's a "known issue" of sorts with basically all of the flourites having so much iron.

People like the tidal because the pump is in the tank and it self primes, but they dislike it due to the bypass issue. @nabokovfan87 has a thread on that with mods he has tried on it.
Aqua clear, new or old, has very similar issues that need to be addressed. Mainly the pump, impeller, shaft longevity. Everything else about the filter is "fine" with the single exclusion of issues where the filter itself can take on too much water and flood. That is in part due to its "rustic" design motif for adjusting the angle of the housing.
The tidal has, without question, the best pump of any filter you can buy. The 55 and up are very good at water movement, flow, etc. The issue is that the pump is so good that it's too strong for the media basket, filter housing, and there are a variety of issues in the intake side of the equation that can lead to fish death. The use case on the tidal is extremely setup dependant and varies greatly based on how your fish will interact with it when they are sleeping.
I would avoid both. Honestly.

This Hygger filter is rated at 120 gph. It’s also at least two times bigger than the Nicrew filter I intended to replace. However, it’s not even as powerful as the Nicrew that’s rated at 53 gph.
I thought maybe I packed it too full of Polyfil, but no matter how much I took out the filter just wasn’t pushing water. The co2 bubbles weren’t even making it halfway across the tank. Such a bummer, lol.
I had someone who I was helping setup a shrimp tank get one of those double sponge + pump filters in a 15G aquarium. It didn't even have the strength to push water out of the uplift tube and didn't have enough flow to grow bacteria. Definitely a good call. They swittched to air power, 3-4 days later we have bacteria and cycle starting.

This is mine, or a version of, but it's all very similar in setup with the ratios adjusted according to whatever I have the pure white channel on.
For the tank you're mentioning, I would adjust down in power, especially considering you are first starting out with a fresh tank.
Pure White: 30-35%
Warm White: 25-30%
Cool White: 20-30%
Blue: 3%
Pink: 35-40%
As the tank gets settled in, then you would just go up by 5-10% on each of those, excluding blue. the blue you can max out at about 5% or so without much fuss or just keep it at the lower 3%. You do get blue from other channels as well. -

It's not just you. I haven't had a great experience with mine either. It's a weird list of issues and things that just don't really make sense in my brain for how difficult the process of using the filter is.

Colony 2.0 is officially active with shrimp and the white clouds are moved. It's not a magical kingdom with an amazing aquascape but I have made a few changes when it comes to the setup. The lower height definitely gives me more options and some welcomed limitations. (29G-->20Long)
In terms of where we are now, I've gone through 3 scoops of anywhere from 40-100 shrimp and sorted them. Cull rate on the first scoop was really high due to things like backbone gene and the whole rili shadow stuff I had going on (40% maybe) and following that I just tried to pick out the very best ones for launching things off on the right foot. I finished up that scoop, then I saw another massive pile of shrimp to sort, so on the project went. I repeated that one more time. There is more to get done, but the whole goal is to take my time and really look at the shrimp. There's a few newborns I have to let grow up before I can tell what is going on with them as well.
Pictures and all that will come when I can, but I would love to see some other shrimpers as well. Dan posted (yep, Dan's fish) some gold amano shrimp that melted my brain a little. Really unique and I don't think I've ever expected amanos to have morphs like that.

I would check locally what rocks you can actually get in the size you need. The main issue is getting "boulder" or larger and supporting them. The larger the rock I tend to prefer things with holes. As far as what "looks good" it really depends on what you're looking for.
Felipe has a lot of great inspiration for big tanks and has many videos where he is inside and working with the rock, showing how he supports it, etc.
Depending on the wood, what you have in mind for layout, then I think you could do well with anything from lava stone and seiryu up to whatever else you wanted. I apologize for the vague recommendation on which, but that's sort of how I would go about it....

Well, if you're visually ok with it, I can imagine there's a way to get a custom, tight, strong lid to handle the kitten duties. It's definitely a challenge. I wish it was easier to get the "right" lid for a side mount tank.
The mini canister makes a lot of sense.
I would recommend checking out things similar to the UNS layout in terms of trays. They don't have the media in the best order, but that is easily remedied. They have new stainless ones if you feel fancy too. For that tank, I would assume something like a 307 or delta 90 is about the right power for circulation. Having the betta in there makes it a little challenging to size it right though.

It's definitely something they enjoy. As long as temperature is good, it helps the water to hold a good amount of oxygenation. If you're having issues, please feel free to make a thread and show your setup. There's a lot of great corydoras keepers here.

I would recommend trying to put the tidal on the end of the tank as opposed to the back.
The setup you have might be fine, but consider something like a small airstone on the right corner as well to push around circulation. Those dead spots in the tank could be the reason you're experiencing algae.

It works, but they like to have space and room. You'll see them swim properly fast and think to yourself, yep, with the tank had more swimming space. They need the distance..... Front to back and left to right. all of it.
