  1. Does anyone have the member’s group picture from Saturday? :)
  2. Howdy everyone! I have recently volunteered for my local fish club to help plan for location spots to host the monthly meetings. Does anyone have an recommendations on where they host their personal meetings to give me some inspiration on where I can start asking? Currently have a budget of less than $100 per event. Most events are around 2 hours and on Sunday. Needs to hold around around 15-20 people on average. We have recently been using churches, but since most churches do not allow transactions to happen on premises, we have not been able to do fish swaps at the end of each meeting. I have personally brainstormed having them at an American Legion Hall, but haven't done much research past that. Any all ideas are welcome! Thank you! 🙂
  3. Hello all, This is my first winter in my own house and I currently keep my aquarium rack in my basement. I currently have the thermostat set to 71, which my upstairs is at, I'm assuming. My basement is far colder, I'm assuming since cold air sinks and the concrete slab under my carpet chilling the room. I didn't know how people keep their basements warm enough during the winter or if anyone had any recommendations for heaters that would sustainably heat the room, even while I away from the house. I think what I am needing (based on preliminary researching) is an oil-filled space heater, but have no previous experience with space heaters or how safe it is to leave it running while away. Here's the current temps on my tanks, bottom rack: 65 degrees, middle 68-69, top rack 70-ish. Granted I mostly keep shrimp and cool water fish like CPD's in unheated tanks, all of my sub-tropicals have heaters in them. Didn't know if any other nerms had any previous or current experience with heating finished basements for fish racks and what the best options are? Thanks in advance!
  4. Good idea! I think Killifish would be tons of fun! They are definitely a beautiful fish! Thanks! 🙂
  5. Hi everyone! I have a fish rack that has some empty space and wanted to see if anyone had any fun recommendations for breeding projects for nano fish. I have breeding CPD's and shimp for a few years now, but now that I have more space I have started dipping into other fish. Just picked up some Guppies for the first time (so excited)! Anyone have any fish that they absolutely love having and breeding? I mostly have 10 and 20 gallon tanks available. Thanks! 🙂
  6. Hi everyone, I just put together my first ever fish rack. Currently using the Gladiator 77" rack with 1/2" sanded plywood with waterproofing stain. I am looking into setting up 12-ish 20 gallon (might swap a few 10's horizontal on end) on the top 2 racks with two 40 gallon breeders on the bottom. Didn't know if anyone had any advice on air pumps? I see a lot of people using linear air pumps (like Randy and Dean), but considering I only plan on having 1 rack for the foreseeable future (I swung a deal with the wife that I get a back wall of our new house's basement, if we were able to snag one, thus here I am). I'm not sure a linear air pump would make the best financial sense, plus I think I would waste it's potential since I will have to bleed off quite a bit of air, I think. I have used the Co-op's USB air pump to run a 5 gallon and a hang on breeder box, but trying to cut down on carbon foot print and save money by investing in just one/a few air pumps to run the rack as a whole, instead of each tank. Anyone have any recommendations on what they use to run several tanks/their rack? Thanks! 🙂 PS: Ignore the mess, the house is a work in progress and I couldn't wait for everything to be done to start the rack haha
  7. Hello everyone, I have recently started acquiring more tanks for my fish rack that I am building. When looking for substrate for previous tanks I have used only ADA Amazonia (version 1) and CaribSea Eco-Complete Planted Aquarium Substrate. I can't seem to find either anymore, I'm not sure if Eco-complete is not being produced anymore; I know that ADA has their version two of Amazonia, just wanted to know what people are using these days and what they have found to be successful/cost effective. I plan on getting some fancy goldfish, caridina shrimp (I've heard UNS controsoil is decent), neocaridina's, and mostly nano fish. So I believe I will probably need a plethora of different types of soil. What do you guys like and what to avoid? :)
  8. I have been breeding CPD’s for over a year and recently had a juvenile that is very transparent. Is this a genetic mutation and can this gene be singled out for breeding? Currently keeping juveniles and adults in a 29 gallon with only shrimp and snails and I don’t have any other fish, so I don’t believe it is a different species and I have added any new plants for over a year, so I don’t believe it’s a hitchhiker. Has anyone else had any experience with this? I will plan to update this as the juvie matures, if it survives. I attached a picture of it eating with its spawn mates, to show color and opaqueness differences.
  9. Hello everyone, I was just wondering if anyone had tips for making a DIY breeder box for CPD fry. I am currently raising CPD fry in a Marina hang-on-back breeding box. I have very limited tank space, so I am limited to where I can grow out the fry. I would like to build a breeder box similar to what Dean made about a year ago on the channel, but the holes would be too big and since the fry are so small, they would slip right through the holes. I believe I would have a better grow out rate if they had access to a much larger body of water. I figured floating a breeder box in the same 29 gallon, as the parents, would allow them to have access to more infusoria until they are larger enough for fry food. Do you guys have any recommendations for some sort of net that is fine enough to wrap baskets or are there other products out there that could hold CPD fry. I've looked at Pen Plax and a few Amazon/petstore brands, but most look like the netting is too large for very tiny fry. Appreciate any and all input. Thanks!
