  1. Thanks! That definitely makes sense. I can totally relate haha some fish look so tiny and silly in a big tank but they don’t always stay that way!!
  2. Hey everyone! Curious to gather thoughts on tank size requirements for the standard common/comet goldfish. I am planning a 125 gallon and am wondering how many I should select. There is quite a range of opinions on various sites and forums. What seems to be the general consensus? Thanks. :)
  3. Hello! I made a post about this about a month ago but have since acquired several new pictures from throughout the internet and am reposting a mega thread regarding this mysterious presentation. I have had a fan tail goldfish presenting with slightly raised white spots on his tail fin for approximately 6 months. They seem to vary in severity depending on the day but they are always there. He behaves and eats normally. Water parameters of the 55g aquarium are stable, usually around 20-30ppm nitrate with a 50% water change weekly. Temperature is room at about 70 give or take a few degrees depending on the day. They do not seem to spread to other fish. I have done extensive research on these spots and what is fascinating is the quantity of other folks dealing with this same problem, but the complete lack of answers/understanding of what is going on. Most seem to have the same story, bumps that last for several months on otherwise healthy fish. It seems the general consensus I’ve found is they are normal and not harmful. I’ve heard some people say they are brought on by higher nitrate weeks. From a purely superficial standpoint I would like to remedy this issue. Here is a pretty comprehensive collection of my own and others photos on the internet of these spots. If anyone has any experience with this PLEASE respond! There seems to be a real lack of education on what these are.
  4. Update: white spots still there, fish still acting normal. Any other experiences with this?
  5. Hello! I have a goldfish who has a few slightly raised white spots on his tail fin. They have been present for several months now and I’m at a loss of what to do. The fish eats and behaves normally. There are three other goldfish in the tank that are also doing well and have no spots. Water parameters are normal (0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 20ppm nitrate.) I change 50% of the water once a week so the nitrates stay below 40ppm. I have tried both ich x and kanaplex a few months ago on this fish and neither did anything. Could this just be some sort of injury that is taking a while to heal? I’m pretty dumbfounded. Thank you!!!
  6. Good morning! Water is good, 0 ammonia and nitrite, 30 nitrate. Fish seems very normal. There are 15 other minnows in the tank (20 long) and they all have been doing well. I did get them about a week ago however so they are newer fish.
  7. Very strange almost cylindrical growth on this white cloud minnows mouth. Any idea what this is?
  8. Interesting! I just got them a few days ago from the coop site. Thanks for the thoughtful response, I appreciate your input! Thanks!!!
  9. Hey everyone! I’m pretty new to the planted aquarium scene and am wondering…if one of an aquarium plant’s leaves is dying back is it advisable to cut the leaf off to help facilitate new growth? If so, is the leaf generally just cut as close to the base as possible? I have a few plants with a dying leaf in my aquarium right now (one apongoton ulvaceous and one dwarf sag). I just wanted to check on this, probably a super easy question…Thanks!!!
  10. That’s relieving, thanks for the reassurance!
  11. I have a very thin sand substrate and a few of my easy root tabs have floated up after a day or two of burying them in the sand. It appears to be just the white gel capsule. Should I be concerned that the fertilizer is now in the water column or does the fertilizer tend to stay in the substrate while the gel cap rises to the top? Just wondering if I should be concerned about a nitrate spike and if I need to reapply more root tabs. thanks!
  12. Hey guys! First time apontogeton owner here, are these planted correctly? Specifically I am unsure if the middle one is planted correctly. Are the bulbous sort of eyes supposed to be facing the light or do I have it upsidedown? thanks!!!
  13. Hello! I am going to be doing a planted species only tank of long fin white cloud minnows in my 20 long. There seems to be a lot of varying information out there as far as stocking, what would you say is a good number of these fish for the 20 long footprint? Thank you!
  14. Good evening! I am treating four fancy goldfish (2 oranda and 2 Ryukin) for ich. I am using ich X and aquarium salt. I am wondering however if anyone has experience with what sort of temperature increase is safe for fancy goldfish? As temperate water fish I’m concerned about going to the mid 80s during treatment. Has anyone done this with success? I am up to 80 degrees right now but am hesitant to go higher. Thanks! :)
  15. Good afternoon! I am quarantining some fancy goldfish using the aquarium coop quarantine trio (maracyn, paracleanse and ich X.) I see it is advised to not feed the fish during the first few days of quarantine. As a beginner fish keeper, I’m curious what the reason for not feeding is. One would initially assume that feeding would be beneficial to strengthen the fish who may not have ate well at the fish store and give them energy to fight off disease - what is the reason behind the fasting? Thanks! 🙂
  16. Hello! I have been working on identifying and treating mysterious white spots on a fancy goldfish of mine for about 3 months now. This goldfish is swimming and eating normally. Seems very healthy outside of the slightly raised white spots on the tail fin. I tried one full treatment of kanaplex in the water column and this does not seem to have remedied the spots. Any recommendations on the next course of action? I’m a little stumped. Other background on the tank: 55 gallon, two fancy goldfish, weekly 50% water changes.
  17. Thanks for the kanaplex recommendation @Colu that might be worth a shot. It’s been about a month or so now. The spots are still there but the fish is behaving normally still!
  18. This is my first real planted aquarium with lots of rooted plants, and honestly, I’m just not sure if I planted them correctly. I tried my best to push the roots into the sand and leave the crowns unburied. Plants are crypt lutea, lucens, and beckettii. A pretty easy question, does it look like these are planted correctly? Especially the lucens I have seem to look different than other photos I see, it seems like I have more white showing on the stems. Thanks everyone 🙂
  19. Just an update, the white spots are still there but the fish is still behaving normally.
