  1. Gracie is my oranda some of you helped me with a bit ago . She improved but then had a slight decline started floating vertically A very . Long story short I have a friend who knows De Lewbart Hello all. Some of you helped me with my Oranda Gracie a bit ago. She had a slight down turn floating vertically so we took her to see Dr Lewbart from NC State he is a Professor of Aquatic, Wildlife and Zoo medicine there and he agreed to see Gracie for me so we made the 2 hour road trip to NC State 2 weeks ago. We trimmed her wen, she had an exam and X-rays done. I attached pictures of her visit for your information. We learned a lot that day. Good news no significant finding except her cranial swim bladder was larger which could be the cause of some of her symptoms. She is at home safely and now we keep her aquarium salinity at 1.002 specific gravity which is helping. I wanted to share our adventure with you and her pictures. One is a video of them listening to her heart I hope you can hear the slow swoosh sound. I am trying very hard to keep a long adventure short so if you have any questions I will answer the best I can. SuzaN I noted some files deleted I will attach

    oranda goldfish

Colu Thank you for your response. ph 7.4; Nitrates and nitrites both zero. Ammonia zero. kh 7; g(h 5. Nothing new added everything same. No rapid breathing, no external signs just lethargy. I did get a response from a friend of mine who is an aquatic and reptile vet in TN. He noted orandas are pretty famous for getting tumors. That he did surgery on one earlier this year with a celomic mass with same symptoms as my oranda. I am going to do another water change and an epsom salt water bath and go from There. She is just not sifting through sand like she normally does. Sitting on bottom upright. she can swim upright and normally just no energy. Eating not too interested.
  6. Good day everyone. I have 2 three plus year old orandas in a 40 gallon breeder. They are feed NorthFin goldfish formula and Repashy Goldfish formula. I also periodically feed them peas and they are offered veggies and duck weed. I try and mix things up. And periodically fed brine shrimp. Water parameters ph steady 7.4, nitrates and nitrites remain at 0, no ammonia Gh 5 Kh 7. My larger oranda has been bottom sitting and becoming lethargic. No external issues noted. I was going to give her an epsom salt bath to start with then treat for internal parasites and go from there. I have had her for 3 years no issues until last week. She was originally purchased at Petsmart 3 years ago: Inam looking for any and all input. Very worried owner. Her name is Gracie . Thank you all in advance for advice. I can send pics later today if needed. I have also contacted a vet friend. Suzan

  8. That is so cool. Loving the fish behavior
  9. Thank you Guppy Snail, Ken Burke and others for sharing their fish behavior stories. I am a retired small animal Veterinary Technician and as much as I love my cats and dogs oh and my chameleon too fish are also quite personable and I find myself talking to them like they are my dogs and cats. Have a great day everyone. Cold and rainy here in eastern NC
  10. Hello everyone. This topic is for fun. I love all types of animal, reptile, aquatic behavior and want to share my Angel Fish's behavior in one of my tanks. Short back ground I have a 40 gallon breeder with Emerald Corydoras and 2 Bolivan rams. I wanted something bigger and be more visable. I have several Angel fish in my other tanks so I got another angel fish. After quarantine for 30 days I put my new angel fish in his new home with the corys and rams. Long story short this fish thinks he is a Cory. He hangs, hides and feeds off the bottom like them. He only comes out when the corys and rams do. Yes he is a lone angel fish so I did introduce another one to see if his behavior would change. I had to remove the other angel fish as this guy was beating up the new one. I said to myself fine Be a cory and have the tank to yourself with the corys and rams. Has anyone else had a certain fish develop the behavior of another type of fish. I found this very interesting and funny. One more reason why fish keeping is so much fun. Thanks for listening. Suzan in NC
  11. Thank you everyone for your responses. I will let you know how it goes
  12. I asked the staff and no one has noticed any listlessness or rapid breathing. Thank you
  13. no new fish added. They are feeding Hikari carnivore bites daily along with Omega One freshwater flakes for the other fish and bloodworms once a week. I tested parameters yesterday and Ammonia 0. Nitrites 0 and yes Nitrates 0 PH 7.2. No rapid breathing. There was a fish death a Pearl Gourami that was truly old. I asked them condition of fish when it died. There are only two other fish in the tank another pearl gourami and 1 Rainbow fish both have been in tank for 5-6 years. The bichir was the last new introduction approx 4 yrs ago. When I was caring for tank I did 30-40 percent water changes every two weeks. Last water change was two weeks ago. I am going to clinic tomorrow to help with another water change. vacuuming too oh and thank you for responding

  15. Hello all. It has been a long time since I have posted anything. I am thankful my tanks are all running well. My Angel fish are HUGE. I do have a question and I am not sure which topic it should be under so I will start here. My veterinarian has a Senegal Bichir in their tank. The fish has been there approx. 4 years and is about 9-10 inches long. Quick history I worked for my vet for 17 years and used to take care of this tank (a 40 gallon breeder) and a previous technician that left the clinic just dropped this bichir in the tank approx 4 years ago. Thankfully the fish has been fine ( I did have to bring the platys and mollies home though) the other day I got a text that the bichir appears slightly bloated. I have pictures but for some reason have been unable to upload them for you all to see. I will keep working on that matter. Anyway does anyone have any experience with these guys. My first advice to them was to withhold food just in case the bichir just ate too much. I did go see the fish and it is not grossly bloated like a fish would be with dropsy. Honestly just looks full. I know this is not a lot to go on but would appreciate any input. As I indicated I will work to figure out how to get pictures to you all. Thank you so much for any input. Suzan
  16. Thank you Mmiller2001, ScottieB, Greg Stewart, lefty o and PineSong. I implemented lighting suggestions, cut back infected plants, I even cut back the amount of food I was feeding my fish. Added additional water change and within a week what a difference. I also removed mopani wood cleaned it and totally removed other fake decor. I have attached pictures. Unfortunately I deleted the old pictures so I do not have them again for comparison. I promise you there is a big difference. Not completely gone but getting there... Thank you Suzan
  17. Hello. this is a 40 gallon breeder that has been set up for 4 months. PH runs between 7.4-7.2; Nitrites 0, Nitrates 0, Ammonia 0. No C02 just weekly Seachem Flourish; lights on 8 hours a day. Root tabs were placed when plants were planted 4 months ago. Aquarium houses 13 young emerald corydoras and 2 bolivian rams. Also a couple of mystery snail 25% to 40% water changes done every 2 weeks. Over the last month black algae (I think) growth noted and yesterday little bits of what looked like white fuzz appeared. I removed anything that had white fuzz yesterday. Also removed a larger piece of mopani wood yesterday which was covered into another tank with a common pleco who literally overnight cleaned it off. I am trying to understand/figure out what I am dealing with here. What type of algae. Not sure if black algae because the common pleco loved it. I was going to try Seachem Flourish Excel but before adding thought I'd ask for advice first. Thank you in advance. Pictures attached. Suzan
  18. This is a long time coming thank you for those who responded to my post about Kimmy the bichir. She is now fine after diet adjustment.
  19. Anybody have any experience with Senegal Bichirs? We have one, approximately 7 inches long, along with 2 Three spot gourami and 1 green rainbow fish in a 40 gallon breeder at my work place. The bichir (who we call Kimmy) was left in the tank a year ago by an employee who moved and could not find a home for him/her. Kimmy has been on a diet strictly of Hikari sinking carnivore pellets and sometimes frozen blood worms. (we used to have a couple of Platy's in tank too and Kimmy ate one so I brought the others home). 40-50% water changes done every two weeks and water parameters checked weekly. This morning it was noted that Kimmy did not respond to seeing food as she usually does and she seems lethargic. I only go into work once a week and Kimmy was fine last week that I noted. Nothing noted on Kimmy's extremities. I did a 50% water change today and I also recommended that we should start offering a varied diet. I know this is not much to go on but I am looking for any and all input. Concerned about Kimmy's lethargy. I have no pictures of Kimmy but can get them. Thank you.
