  1. @Odd Duck You know your snails! Thank you!
  2. Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm going with the conclusion they are small ramshorn snails that hitchhiked in somehow, are harmless and kinda cool, and will probably get eaten by the angelfish or opaline gourami before they get too big.
  3. Does anyone know what this little guy is? I first saw one on the glass a few days ago then found this one on driftwood today and took him out for further examination. It's no bigger than the diameter of a pencil. It looks like a snail to me but it's awfully small and there are no big snails in the tank to make baby snails.
  4. I've used bio-wheels that were in the garage for a while. Just give it a good soak overnight and rinse off. What I'd really like to know is are those wheels actually effective or just a gimmick. I like the idea that they maintain a home for bacteria when cartridges are changed (if you use cartridges). But how big a home does the wheel actually provide? I'd love a side-by-side scientific experiment of wheel vs. no-wheel. This is also true for so many products!
  5. @Odd DuckI’m in! My plan was to scrounge on this tank anyway. @Mydonkeyfishare you sure it wasn’t a rainbow shark? I’ve never heard of a red tail that big!
  6. Thanks all for your comments. Especially, @Odd Duck for suggesting to measure the tank! I got the tank free from a friend whose kids lost interest and it's been in my garage ever since. I just assumed it was a 26 bowfront because that's about the smallest I've seen in stores. Turns out it's only a 16G tank! 20" x 17.5" x 12.5" No shark for me! 😆 Time to rethink the plan...
  7. One more thought on heat. I had a friend who ended up living in his parents' garage for a bit. Adding foam insultation to the garage door panels made a big difference. I don't know what the make up of your doors are but that might help.
  8. Hello Fishy Friends! I'm working on a scheme for a tank in my home office. I decided to fill it with fish I've always liked but somehow never actually kept. First to mind was a Red Tailed Shark! When I was a kid I was fascinated by one in a tank in a pirate ship at the Stride Rite shoe store at the Willow Grove Mall (this mall is now semi-famous from The Goldbergs and Jill Biden). I would give anything to have that pirate ship cabinet! My concept is a low maintenance, low light setup, an oversized filter for high flow, and lots of rocks, wood, and low light plants. As for tank mates, not many. Maybe a bunch of danios or a small school of barbs (only species I've never kept!). I'm concerned the tank just won't be big enough once it reaches full size. Those of you with more experience with this fish, what do you think? Thoughts on the concept overall? Why a 26 bowfront? Because I have one in the garage and it'll fit in the space I have!
  9. If you're asking out of general curiosity I have no idea. But that's ok because @mpm42 rocked the factual answer. If you're asking out of concern that tank will end up on the floor then I'd say you have nothing to worry about. I've seen far less well built stands endure tanks of that size without fail.
  10. I have a Duetto (not sure they are still available) which is a similar design, effective and quiet. You do have to get wet to service it. It is also nice because you can move it around the tank to direct the flow where you want it. duetto 50 at DuckDuckGo How about an updated photo?
  11. @Theresa_M I'm sorry and I feel your pain! I did something similar once. I got overeager at the LFS and brought home some festivum ciclids and killed several prized angelfish with a nasty fungus that swept through the tank. You and your tank will recover!
  12. I’ve had trouble finding females. The local endler breeding cartel is hard at work.
