  1. I was wondering if anyone knows how long a rummynose tetra bears their eggs? I have what I'm pretty sure is a female who seems to be pretty pregnant, but has been large for a while now, like a month I would say. Is this normal? The fish hasn't lost any coloration, no pine coning or anything, swims fine, but is very fat so I figure it's pregnant. Never had any fish that have spawned before though so I know nothing about their gestation periods or anything.
  2. It is acting completely normal and eating normally too. It's just the sudden color change that has me worried. It went from normal silver like the rest to a dull yellow in a day or less perhaps.
  3. Back around the end of January, I think it was, I got some rummynose tetras and one of them never really colored up. I quarantined them all together for a month and used the medicine regimen recommended by the Co-op. Of the 23 tetras I got, one never colored up red on its head. Having gone through quarantine with no visual issues and them receiving the meds i gave them I figured that maybe it was just a genetic defect since all the rest colored up and they all seemed healthy including the one that didn't color up. Fast forward until 2 days ago and the same one has still never colored up red on its head, but it has now begun to yellow as you can see in the picture I provided below. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Nothing looks wrong on its body other than the color issues so if it is something I would imagine it is internal. Tank temp is 82f, Ammonia is 0ppm, Nitrite is 0ppm, Nitrates are <~40ppm, and pH is 6.6. thanks for any insight!
  4. Quarantine tank is 10 gallons. Not really chasing pH, but more so just wanting to know/track my parameters and what's affecting them. Like, when I eventually move fish from quarantine tank to main tank, if the pH is different, do I need to acclimate the fish to the main tank parameters first? Also, if my tap water comes out at around 7.0 pH, but my tanks are 6.6 and 6.4, would water changes be a dangerous shock to the fish? If so, what should I do to alleviate? This is more my train of thought for keeping track of things. I also know ammonia is very basic and raises pH. Normally after I dose my aquariums up to 3ppm the pH is like 8.2/8.4 ish, and it seems to drop accordingly as the ammonia is processed as well. Also, I've been keeping fish off and on the last few years so I have some experience, but it's definitely been a learning curve, and I definitely still consider myself a beginner with lots to learn. When I began the hobby I found myself wanting to dive right into high-tech setups, dosing CO2, and got in over my head fairly quickly with algae issues. Decided to relearn properly and start with low-tech stuff to build a solid foundation on. I appreciate the reply and advice! Feel free to chime in whenever and enjoy the ride with me!
  5. So, first things first, it was suggested to me to make a journal to track the progress of my tank in this thread : I thought it was a great idea so here we are and welcome to my journey! Below is a picture of my tank as of Wednesday 1/13/2022. Mechanical stuff: 30 gallon long rimless aquarium Fluval 206 filter Current Satellite Plus Pro 24"-36" 100w Eheim Heater Aquarium Co-op USB Nano Air Pump and an air stone https://www.aquariumcoop.com/collections/air-accessories/products/usb-nano-air-pump Plants: Anubias Nana Dwarf Sag Val Crypt Wendtii red Amazon Sword Christmas Moss Livestock Plans: ~20 Rummynose Tetras ~6 Oto's once algae builds up and they have some job security Pair of Apistogramma Agassizii Fire red I was going to include the sand and stuff in with the plants list, but I wanted to explain what I did more thoroughly than just saying what I put in it. On the left is sand, some inert Caribsea stuff, with a barrier of dragon stone between it and the right side. Right side is a small single layer of crushed lava rock with Fluval Stratum on top and then capped back off with more crushed lava rock. My thought process for this was that maybe the small layer of crushed lava rock at the bottom might help with circulation and help prevent anaerobic bacteria from building up. I know that small stuff sifts down through bigger stuff so I fully expect the Stratum to do this, but still, here's to hoping it helps! Oh, also, I have an Aquarium Co-op root tab ( https://www.aquariumcoop.com/products/easy-root-tabs?_pos=1&_sid=378134a34&_ss=r ) under each Val, crypt and Sword node (3 under the sword). This may be overkill with the Fluval Stratum, but I still consider myself new and learning so, meh. Can't learn if you don't make mistakes. I'm somewhere like a month into my cycle (a bit over I am pretty sure). Doing fishless cycles, dosing ammonia to 3ppm. I normally use these as my guides when I do my cycle in case I need any reminders/help. https://www.aquariumadvice.com/forums/f15/the-almost-complete-guide-and-faq-to-fishless-cycling-148283.html https://www.fishkeeping.co.uk/articles_51/fishless-cycling-article.htm Second link is more for the ammonia dosing calculator. I think I partly crashed my cycle about 10 days ago when I put my hardscape stuff in the tank, and then again on Thursday when I added my plants in. I say partly because I was processing 3ppm ammonia to nitrates in about 2 days, but now its taking like half a week to do it. I didn't lose my nitrite to nitrate bacteria though which seems weird, but even now whenever I test my water parameters, which is every evening, there's never any nitrites, but my ammonia is slowly going down and my nitrates are still going up so I am assuming they are still there, but I'm not 100% sure. Seems like it though. Lastly, to get everything up to date, my tap water comes out at what looks like 7.0 pH (I swear some of the colors on the API kit stuff are so dang close its hard to tell between something like 6.8 and 7.0 pH), 0 ammonia, nitrites and 0 nitrates. The pH my quarantine tank, which I have been cycling along side my main tank, is showing 6.6, and my main tank is showing 6.4. Not totally sure why the pH is dropping, so I will have to figure that out. If anyone can help with that or has ideas let me know! I know Fluval Stratum lowers pH so I imagine that's why the pH in my main tank dropped to 6.4, but not totally sure about the quarantine tank as it just has some crushed lava rock and some pvc for hiding. So that is everything up to date as of 2:23 AM 1/16/2022 I appreciate anyone who reads this (I know its long) and decides to watch/help me on my journey!
  6. @Beardedbillygoat1975 how do I start a journal? I'm fairly new to this site
  7. I'm planning on about 20 rummynoses and a pair of Apisto Agassizii fire reds. Then probably about 6 otos for algae control. It's only a 30 long so it will probably be at its limit filtration wise. Have a fluval 206 cannister on it.
  8. @Sumson @ScottieB Just got plants in the tank. xmas moss on the rock cave on the left, val in the back, amazon sword on the right, dwarf sag front right, and between val and sag are 3 crpyt wendtii, and anubias nana's on the rocks dividing sand and lava rock/stratum
  9. So I am preparing a tank that is going to have ~20 rummynose tetra's and a pair of apisto agassizii's. I bought the baby brine shrimp from co-op, but I am pretty sure I need more than just that to feed these fish. Will Hikari micro pellets be enough to fill out their diet? Also, how often do apisto's need live food? Is a couple times a week ok, every other day or maybe less? And, should I get the brine shrimp hatcher that co-op sells on the site? Is that over kill for the small amount I would need to hatch for feeding?
  10. @Sumson @ScottieB So I decided to remove some of the lava rock. I left like a single layer at the bottom, put the stratum on top, then capped back with another layer of lava rock. Looks basically the same as the photo I already posted so I won't post one right now. Plants should be here in a week so I will update with a picture then. Sticking to low light plants since I'm fairly new to planted tanks. I've tried planted ones before, but definitely tried to do more than I was capable of knowledge wise and was never really successful. So I'm just going to go back to the basics and build my knowledge from the bottom up!
  11. Okay, so I am working on this tank and am about to add fluval stratum to it on the right side which is where I will be planting. Currently you are seeing lava rock in that area and my question is this. Can I put the fluval stratum on top of this or should I remove the lava rock and put the stratum on the bottom and then cap it with the lava rock? I know that if I put the stratum on top of it it will make its way down in between the lava rock, but I'm not totally sure that's a bad thing. Wouldn't that just promote better water flow though out the substrate and prevent any anaerobic areas? The only thing I can really think of that may be an issue would be something root related like roots growing down past the stratum into the lava rock and not getting the same nutrient quantity as it would if it were on the bottom. Thanks for any insight!
  12. The lava rock definitely isn't small enough for them to sift, but that's not a bad idea to have an area for them to do their sifting. I'm more so concerned with how they feed. Is it via the water column or sifting or both I guess is possible too?
  13. I'm thinking about using crushed lava rock as my substrate, but I also want Apisto's. Can this work?
  14. Probably just more out of ignorance than anything. Just trying to figure things out.
  15. I know it is recommended to have 2 females per 1 male when getting these fish, but what if I don't want any females is that okay? I know the recommended comp is so that there are options for the males and a singular female doesn't get the brunt of all the mating attention, but if I am not worried about breeding them will a group of just males be fine together? I know some other fish are ok in these scenarios, but I am not sure about the dwarf neon rainbow. Also, if you want to help me with stocking ideas that would be cool too. I have a 30 gallon long tank. I was thinking like 6 male rainbows (if this is okay for them) and probably like close to 20 cardinals and possibly 6 panda corys or another type of cory. I'll be running a fluval 206 cannister for the filter so I think I should be okay bioload management wise. Also want to plant the tank decently. I never seem to have the best luck with much when it comes to plant, but I really like and want to go for the sweeping val across the top look, but I am not sure what else to go with it or substrate stuff. The light I have is Current Satellite Plus Pro and water pH is roughly 6.8 range.
  16. I am curious about the height differences in these. In the Co-op shop there is val and then there is jungle val. what is the difference in the two? I'm going to guess jungle val gets taller, but I do not know for certain. I have a 30 gallon long tank which I am cycling currently and am trying to plan my next scape and I have never done val before and like the idea of the draping grass in the water look it gives, but I dont want to get jungle val if regular val will give me the same look since the tank is only 13 in. tall.
