  1. I can’t say for certain, but it might be a magnesium and/or a calcium deficiency. Source: https://www.aquariumcoop.com/blogs/aquarium/plant-nutrient-deficiencies
  2. You can try manually removing as much as you can before dosing Easy Carbon or another source of gluteraldehyde. You could also employ some algae eaters like Amano shrimp, Florida Flagfish, or even a hungry colony of livebearers like platies.
  3. I use a DIY brine shrimp hatchery system with a large bottle. After they hatch, I use a lamp to shine on the side of the bottle and just siphon them out with a turkey baster. To collect them, you can buy a cheap brine shrimp net like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Shrimp-Special-Artemia-Hatchery-Random/dp/B08F36FLJT/ref=sr_1_7?crid=1SAIGK9UV5RAV&keywords=brine+shrimp+net&qid=1664926287&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI1LjE3IiwicXNhIjoiNC4zNSIsInFzcCI6IjQuMjEifQ%3D%3D&s=pet-supplies&sprefix=brine+shrimp%2Cpets%2C350&sr=1-7 You can also rinse them in these nets, but I rarely ever do it because the amount of salt I would be adding to my aquariums is negligible. You can also get some of the cheaper brine shrimp hatcheries out there other than the Ziss hatchery if it's too pricey. But I agree that you could also use frozen adult or baby brine shrimp.
  4. I actually saw this in another thread on the forum, so I watched it already, but thank you! Yes, it is all very exciting! I am counting the days for when it is time for them to be in the post-larval stage 🙂
  5. I haven’t had Pearl gouramis personally, but I have kept other types of gouramis. While it is not “usual” for females to be aggressors, each fish is an individual with its own personality and temperament. You can watch for another couple days to see if the aggression subsides, but if it doesn’t, you might consider just bringing her back to your LFS for store credit. It’s ultimately your call for how long to wait and what you consider to be overly aggressive behavior.
  6. I personally would remove the rocks because they add unnecessary weight and they can shift during the transfer. All it takes for a scratch or a crack to happen is for someone to slip while moving the tank and one of the rocks slams against a side of the tank. Maybe you can think of this as another opportunity to change up your hard scape 😉 As for how much water to drain, I would drain as much of the water as you can (more than 80%). 20% of 60 gallons is 12 gallons, which is roughly 100 pounds. Even if you halved that amount of water because of the substrate, that is another 50 lbs to tack on to moving the tank (and substrate) itself.
  7. I have never had blue-green algae stain my drift wood before. If you want to be safe, you can treat the wood in a tank with Maracyn or Erythromycin to completely eliminate any blue-green algae that may have persisted. You could soak the wood in there for a week with the meds, change out the water and soak for a week again in clean water.
  8. I take it that your Italian is not your strongest language 😂 But I know what you mean… it was so hard for me to understand Quebecois French in Montreal when I was used to speaking Parisian French in school. Which of the other languages do you mostly speak in your part of Switzerland?
  9. Please send photo updates of the fry and invert babies 🙏
  10. She was probably saved by her operculum until you rescued her. She clamped it shut to slow down her rate of dehydration, lucky snail!
  11. I’m not Swiss, but I’d love to visit one day 😉 I remember becoming interested in the country when we were learning about Francophone countries in school (in Canada). I thought it was so cool that it had four official languages. The red and white colour scheme for a flag is pretty awesome 🇨🇦🇨🇭
  12. Yeah! They’re still in marine conditions (30-35 ppt). There’s a range bc I just top off the tank with distilled water whenever I remember to 😂 Once they metamorphose, I’ll be acclimating them to freshwater
  13. Day 22: Important Development! Some of the Zoe are actually moving towards the bottom and trying to walk around before being carried off by a current.
  14. You can also add wonder shells https://www.aquariumcoop.com/products/wonder-shell They help increase hardness and the mineral content of the water
  15. I was browsing Facebook Marketplace and saw someone selling one of these 0.5 gallon “self-cleaning” tanks. Amazon link below. I thought it would be a decent option for someone who doesn’t want to do drill holes and attach gaskets to mini tanks (a bit pricy though for 0.5 gallon tanks) for a betta barracks system. I’m wondering if anyone has used these in a betta barracks set-up and/or if they know the inner workings of why this design works (how it sucks from the bottom). 16. She’s gorgeous 😍😍 I was also surprised to find out she’s a girl. I can’t tell super well from the photo but as long as there’s an egg spot, she’s a girl!
  17. I agree, it looks like snail poop. What kind of snails do you have? Malaysian trumpets are livebearers so you won’t see eggs. Rabbit snails lay large white eggs (size of pencil eraser). Ramshorn snails and bladder snails lay clusters of translucent eggs that remind you of mini frog eggs.
  18. I’ve always been on the outside looking in at the dart frog hobby. I bought an old MistKing system from a hobbyist who breeds dart frogs and I just gawked in his office for a good 10 minutes. I would love to have these guys one day, but I would not look forward to maintaining fruit fry cultures 😂 I did maintain them once when I was raising up some tarantula slings.
  19. I have some fun breeding projects going. I bought 5 platinum halfbeaks in Northern California when I was visiting some family. Now, I only have a trio of 2m 1F, but the female is looking more and more chubby every day. I set up a floating fry trap so the fry can get inside to escape the adults. Also, I’ve been documenting the growth of my Amano shrimplets in the Photos, Videos, and Journals topic. They are 19 days old now and soon will be metamorphosing. This batch just seems to be doing really well. I can’t wait to raise up a bunch of Amano shrimp. I would love to also sell some to my LFS one day and have them proudly tell customers that they are locally bred. My blue Neo colony is finally taking off, after trying with this color variety for years. They always seemed to die out but now I have lots of babies and berried females. Also, one of my scarlet badis has sexed out and I finally have a female. I’m just pushing for space to find a tank for them to spawn. My CPD and platinum ricefish fry are growing to a good size where I can have them live with their parents. I plan on using their grow-out tank as a spawning tank for the Scarlet badis. I am still waiting on signs of fry or spawning from my clown killifish and Pygmy corydoras. There are just so many fish I want to spawn and not enough tanks 🙃🥲 Finally, not fish related, but I will be going to a reptile expo on Sunday for my birthday gift. I will be getting some different forms of P. pruinosus isopods. I already have the powder orange and powder blue variants. I am looking for the orange cream, Oreo crumble, and white out color forms. I hope to one day breed enough of them and sell them in a party pack with all the color variants.
  20. Sadly, no I didn’t get any white cloud fry. I did passive breeding in a 20 gallon tub last year and got about 8 that raised up, but I think the 5 gallon I had them in this year was just too small for any fry to raise up. It might work if I rotated spawning mops/floating plants. Also, I dropped them into the pond right away from the store so they may not have adjusted well before I pulled them in (there was a cold snap).
  21. The haul of the platinum ricefish fry I raised from the outdoor tubs (started with 5 adults).
  22. Yes, I keep bladder snails, MTS, and ramshorn snails together in multiple tanks. When there aren’t any MTS or ramshorn snails, the pond snails do well. I think one of the biggest factors is the rate at which they reproduce. Ramshorn snails and MTS proliferate crazy fast. Pond snails reproduce a bit slower. It also seems like my MTS tend to outcompete the ramshorn snails.
