  1. So I lost my very favorite goldfish, Buddy, the other day and I have decided to downsize my hobby to a singular tank. I've drained Buddy's former tank (mostly, give or take the last .25" of water beneath the sand substrate) and I am trying to come up with a clever way of clearing it out before I sell. Previously, I would just scoop out old sand/substrate but I've been having back issues lately and can't really stand the thought of lifting wet, heavy sand out of the 75 gallon tank over and over. Especially since my roommate took our tall stool. Has anyone tried to use a shop vac for something like this? If I was strong enough, I'd just take the whole thing outside and dump it... but its a 75g with atleast 30 pounds of wet sand in the bottom.... not liftable. Any ideas?
  2. If there hasn’t been any issues then I wouldn’t worry about it… but knowing there was weird algae would have me cleaning it really well. If you are nervous about contaminants or something coming over from the old tank I’d just give it a really good rinse and replace all the media and start from scratch. Safest option is always to clean everything really well. I know in past experience I buy new tubing because they're more difficult to clean.
  3. So I recently bought two cheap fantail goldfish for my 75g that was sitting empty. They both had interesting colors that I hadn’t seen on a fantail before so I pulled the trigger. The dark one I am confident is a fantail— since he looks just like my OG goldfish in my other tank. The white one is who I’m doubting. I thought his tail fin was just clamped up in the store and figured it was just stress but its been a couple weeks and the closer I’m looking the closer it looks like a single tail fin. Really odd since he was in a tank w/ all the other fantails and his body shape looks like a fantail to me too. He swims fine but does swim SLIGHTLY “crooked”. What is this imposter?
  4. To aerate the water / surface agitation for my goldfish. My canister is too powerful to aim at the surface, so I aim it at the back wall to soften the blow and use the bubbles for extra O2 and surface agitation. I see a noticeable difference in the fish's behavior when I have it vs don't
  5. ABOVE THE WATER LINE. Maybe that was also a contributing factor.... moving the new ones now... lol.
  6. Pretty much exactly that! Its *meant* to keep water from moving toward/into your airpump.. but had it not disconnected for me it would have saved me in this instance as well. Highly recommend you pick some up!
  7. Yeah, Ill have to look extra close and make sure I get barbed ones in future. Just bizarre because this tank has been running as is for over a year. Crazy how things like this just ✨ happen ✨
  8. The airline I was using was a cheaper black one, felt very malleable… I’m thinking that was a contributing factor as well.
  9. Yeah I’m thankful, but also annoyed. Tank is full and no leaks from the tank.. got one of the canisters up and running but unfortunately the larger of the two canisters is completely trashed. I have a 307 laying around but it isn’t nearly as big as this sunsun 704b.. Im moving the media over and praying.
  10. Yeah I had a check valve, but thats where the airline tubing slipped off. Maybe the airline was just old or poor quality or something.. I’ll definitely be replacing. So bizarre. I’m refilling now with my fingers crossed its not a silicone leak. Thankfully my goldfish are OK, but Im hoping to get the original tank up and running. The other tank I threw them into has only been running two days so it isn’t ideal for them.
  11. Title says it all, but I can’t figure out how it happened? I was woken up by the sound of my canister filters grinding from running dry and when I walked in my two goldfish were swimming in about 4” of water in their 75 gallon tank. Quickly unplugged everything and threw some towels down and started investigating. There is no water in the stand, where the canisters sit, there is no water on the side closest to the door so no leaks on that side, and I don’t see any cracks or anything unusual on the glass… The only weird thing is that the airline tubing I have that is attached to an airstone came loose from the check valve… and there was some water in the airline.. is THAT what caused this? If it had been syphoning water like that all night? UPDATE: Was 100% the airline tubing syphoning water out after it detached from the check valve, shoutout to the folks below who told me to get a barbed check valve and to zip tie the connections... everything is locked down now. I have refilled the tank and there are 0 leaks on the tank or the canisters. I did lose my largest canister filter because it was running dry for so long and burnt out, bummer. I had a fluval 307 on hand which is smaller, but will get the job done. My #1 favorite goldfish is ALIVE so I am super thankful. Every towel I own is currently in the washer, the floor is dry, and all is well. 😀
  12. This may seem like an odd question but in my current living situation space is limited and I am having a hard time finding a way to store my 50ft python water changer without getting a bunch of bends and kinks. Usually if I run warm water through it, I can wrap it up nice and neat but the water has to be pretty warm and none of my tanks require anything outside of cold or room temp. I also heard that running hot water through it is not good. How do you guys store it? How do you keep it wrapped up without it getting all bent up?
  13. Came back here to amend my statement of my sunsuns being fine, lol. Overall they have been great for me for a little over a year.. but right now I am getting a ton of noise in my 704B.. I've ordered a new impeller and hope this will solve but thought I would bring it up here incase you were still considering. When I researched it, it seems many people have been having this noise issue after a year of use. (Though, they've been able to solve) Also someone mentioned that there won't be many plants in a goldfish tank--mostly true. I can do plants if I guard the base with small rocks so they don't dig, but pothos and floating plants are a great option too.
  14. ammonia 0 nitrites 0 nitrates 20 (easy green for a couple plants I have in there), very well established healthy tank with 0 issues thus far. I do have rocks in there.. but I have a hard time believing he knocked into them and that is the cause considering he is the only one who has this issue and it is in both eyes.
  15. Hello! One of my goldfish has cloudy eyes.. seems to have come out of no where. Water quality is good, parameters are normal, and I'm not sure what happened to him. Its in both eyes at about the same severity. What I really need to know: What do I use to treat and is it contagious? He is sitting in my hospital tank right now but i need to know if the other fish in his home tank need to go ahead and be treated for preventative purposes as well? Thanks,
  16. I did, she told me that he is a zombie fish and was eatin gthe others and I was like: "No its not. He may peck at dead bodies but he is not large or aggressive enough to kill other fish. Go get him some friends." lol
  17. My friend has ONE of these in her tank.. id? Maybe a glow danio or something?
  18. You can totally do HOBs..I think it is really about preference honestly. I like having the bulk of my equipment underneath and I have found to be able to have more surface area for BB to grow in a canister, but Cory had a whole video about the HOB vs canister argument. Main issue with canisters is they can be annoying to clean..They are expensive too, which is why I have two smaller ones on each tank instead of one large one on each tank. Learning curve wise they're easy to understand and you'll only have spills on your first go setting one up. Fluval is my personal favorite because is is super easy to set up and is the only brand I've used where I did not spill a ton of water but folks on here seem to like Eheim brand canisters as well. I also have more budget friendly sunsun filters and they work fine for me but were annoying and difficult to set up, primarily with priming it. Linking a couple videos below that helped me make my choice, but like I said.. I personally think it is a preference for most applications.
  19. As big of a tank as you can get for sure! Surface area is important too: example a 40 tall vs a 40 breeder, you’d want to go breeder because it has more surface area. I have 4 fancies in a 75 and 4 smaller ones in a 55 with extra filtration and they do very well. I over filtrate like crazy because they are so messy.. two canisters on each tank that I have. In one I have sand with some large smooth river stones and a couple crypts. If you do have a few plants in there I would put a little rock barrier around the base so your fish won’t dig them out! In the other tank I have seiryu stone on sand with pothos. My fish do well with it but I would be careful as the rocks are jagged and can injure their fins if they are particularly flowy. Sand/gravel vs bare bottom is another debated topic.. I like sand for aesthetic and my fish love digging through it but you run the risk of them actually eating it and causing digestive issues. Hasn’t happened to me (yet) but they will 100% get mouthfuls of sand to sift through at the very least. Sourcing goldfish, atleast online, can be a little harder. I am lucky because I have 2-3 great local fish stores that carry a variety of fancies I have easy access to. If you’re interested in Ranchus as all, Luke’s Goldies (from tiktok) is awesome, but you’d have a wait as he is currently moving his whole operation across several states. I have not bought any fancies online personally, but Zhao’s or maybe Chu Chu’s (I think thats what it is called) seem to be okay from what I’ve read. I have definitely added to cart on those sites 😜 Biggest thing if you’ve been out of fish keeping for awhile is go ahead and drop the 80-120 bucks on a python water changer. Goldfish are incredibly messy and need big water changes and you do NOT want to be hauling buckets if you're planning on getting a tank larger than 40 gallons (which you should if you can). Be sure to post updates and pics of the new setup once you get going!
  20. Outside wall, yes.. but it would be against a window. I guess I could get blackout curtains. As for the floor beams.. not sure how I could tell... This makes me hopeful. It will be an office and fish room setup similar to how i have it now.. I could settle for one big tank for my goldfish.. but it would also mean ditching all my work on the planted co2 setup.. decisions.. lol
  21. In this case, the landlord is my father 🤣 and he said "I think it will be fine."...but I don't trust that. lol
  22. So, I am moving soon and won't have a ton of space for my tanks. I have 2-75s and a 55 gallon that will have to go on the second floor. If anything, I will downsize my three tanks to one 125 or something similar. Another unfortunate: It'll probably be on carpet 😓 My question is: Is it okay to have multiple tanks or one large tank in a single room on the second floor of a house? How can I check that it is safe and won't damage anything? Thanks!
  23. I think nerites do need a slightly higher temp.. I tun my goldies at around 67-70.. haven’t been able to successfully keep nerites in my goldfish tanks at all though! Not sure if its temperature related or not.. but they do fine in my planted tank at 86 and have successfully kept them in planted tanks in the mid 70s!
  24. My fancies haven’t had any swim bladder issues but I too feed them different stuff, several same as you. Repashy they like (but don’t love), they wont touch peas for me much, they get some xtreme goldfish flakes and xtreme big fella pellets too.. I’m not sure why but they go NUTS for the big fella pellets.. they get a few different pellets from hikari as well. I do try to avoid ones that sink too quickly so they don’t eat up sand but they typically get to it fast enough anyway. I don’t soak my pellets or anything.. could it be where you’re ordering them from? Maybe they could be sick when you received them and it progresses? As for main question.. I’m sure you could technically eliminate pellets all together. For some its just a preference so long as they're getting all they need.
