Can you have several 5 gallons or is it 5 gallons total? That is such a bummer I was looking forward to seeing what you would setup after the move.

What to do with the rejects...a third wheel GBR
TheDukeAnumber1 replied to Brandy's topic in General Discussion
1) Re-home 2) New tank 3) Euthanize That's a tough decision to make... but will depend of your views of fish keeping ethics and your specific situation. GL! -
TBH 40ppm really isn't bad, but Easy Green does have nitrogen in it so I would try dosing only once a week. I also agree with the other comments that a floating plant or pothos may help with the balance.

They are fine, the Co-op used to carry them. Big-ish bubbles and no control over bubble size like the Ziss ones. ATM I'm using my own 3d printed ones though so I can add weights to make them silly heavy.

Do you fertilize, what is the substrate, how long has the tank been running?

Does a Quick disconnect exist for airline tubing?
TheDukeAnumber1 replied to Stephan Jones's topic in General Discussion
I just pull the hose on and off the hose adapter but I think this could be a pretty easy project with a few small magnets and a 3d printer.- 6 replies

Floating plant that is easy to care for
TheDukeAnumber1 replied to Joe V's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
I've had success using giant duckweed and water hyacinth for nitrate removal. -
I think you would be better served by google searching than by my very limited knowledge on diatoms. I know when it comes to micro organisms and small creatures in general there are so many species and varieties and interactions that nailing things down specifically can be impractical. GL though hope your tanks clear up soon!
-
Your photo looks like a typical bloom but maybe on the heavy side. In eternity past I had this issue and recently my sisters tank had this issue. I believe it is cause by a bloom of bacteria or diatoms feeding off something in the substrate. In my cases it fully went away once the tanks were "fully mature" which took months. A UV sterilizer might clear it up but time will ultimately be what solves the issue.

What are you water parameters and do you dose fertilizers? I've seen bacterial blooms before that do this and you just have to wait it out but yours sounds rough. IMO best to test water and wait it out but a UV sterilizer may help.

Water changes -- water softener -- temperature shock
TheDukeAnumber1 replied to SpongeFilter's topic in General Discussion
I am assuming that your bylass valves are brass valves soldered to copper pipe? I would try applying a penetrating lubricant like WD-40 to the valve stems and maybe try to get the valves warm with a hair dryer. This has a chance to make them loose enough to get unstuck, but fair warning anytime you mess with old plumbing with issues there is a chance things will leak. Usually best to replace with new.- 14 replies

Aquarium Co-op new Brine Shrimp Eggs!
TheDukeAnumber1 replied to Dean’s Fishroom's topic in General Discussion
Dean uses an old Nuova brand sieve, I'm not sure if they are still around but it looks like the Hobby Artemia Sieve is identical. I use the Ziss BS sieve SF-1 .1mm. I'm not sure how available those are but a .1mm sieve with stainless mesh is what you need.- 99 replies

Aquarium Co-op new Brine Shrimp Eggs!
TheDukeAnumber1 replied to Dean’s Fishroom's topic in General Discussion
.3tsp eggs tested and the hatch rate and separation did appear to be better than what I have been using. I will be tempted to run through my old stock extra quickly. Ty Co-op. On a side note, under to Co-op website brine shrimp description it reads, "100 gram sized container is meant for most hobbyists level aquarists." Wondering if it should read "The 100 gram sized container is meant for most hobby level aquarists."- 99 replies

Aquarium Co-op new Brine Shrimp Eggs!
TheDukeAnumber1 replied to Dean’s Fishroom's topic in General Discussion
Wow, this quadripule seal is very legit. Sealed bag in a tin with a seal, metal lid, then plastic cap. They are darker than what I have been using, I have a batch in now and am looking forward to the results!- 99 replies
