  1. If you google "angelfish selective breeding genetics" you'll find an article that may discuss this. I recall him discussing combinations of traits based on the parent's traits.
  2. Hi @igot2gats, as you said, that is definitely not a bad level, and you just want to see if you can improve. Same here. I watched a YouTube vid last night where they compared identical planted tanks, one with injected CO2 and one without for a month or so and as expected the tank with co2 had much more growth, but also zero nitrates during the test period. The tank without c02 injection had steady nitrate increase, only decreasing with water changes. Planted tanks without co2 are definitely possible, and people here have "walstad tanks" that only need water changes after many months, but there are a lot of factors, and there isn't always an easy answer.
  3. Really glad to hear this... I always do this and now I won't have that nagging feeling that I should have soaked them in something!
  4. Agree, great photo! Is the pair alone in the tank?
  5. The actual size of the lid on my 29 gallon (nominal 30") is 29.25".
  6. That's odd, I'd have thought it was standard size. Is there something about the rim on that kit that is 1/4" thicker? TopFin also has hinged glass lids ... you'd think it would fit... but all else fails if you have a local glass shop they could cut it for you. I only had to do that on an old non-standard oceanic tank.
  7. Ha, I thought so as well because I have four x07 Fluval filters that it is "designed" to hook up to using their tubing... when I clicked the "where to buy" link petco/smart came up but they don't have it... emailed Fluval, they said it won't be available to general public until November.
  8. I used eco complete in my new tanks, kinda wish I had gone with soil underneath... how many hours of light do you use? She recommends at least 12 hours (with the siesta period), which is what many people claim is too much and will lead to algae.
  9. I have a large piece of driftwood in my 53 gallon that I setup 2 months ago. It's cool because its arch shaped and fish can swim under it. The tint bugged me at first but maybe it's an acquired taste because as long as the water is clear (tinted, but not cloudy!) this doesn't bother me. I've started to kinda like the look.
  10. A week or so ago I specifically heard Fish Boy on YouTube mention this. He overhangs his 10 gallon side-by-side tanks by a small amount in the back rather than make custom shelves. He said something like "I know people in the comments will yell at me for this, but I've never had an issue"...I don't remember how much he had extended, and these were 10 gallons and not as deep as 20 talls. It's all physics...the bottom frame needs to handle a volume of (overhang X height X water weight in that volume). You should be able to figure out how much extra weight that is. It's not the glass, but the frame that matters in this case.
  11. From what I've researched, UV sterilizers are good to have as they kill some bacteria and algae in the water column. They only kill bacteria that passes directly over the light, so they are typically housed in an enclosure that you hookup inline with your filter. They are meant to be on 24x7, and you may need to replace bulbs every 6 months or so. If memory serves me correctly Ben Ochart recommends them in one of his YouTube vids on water clarity. My Sunsun 304B has one built into the filter. I currently don't leave it on 24x7 because I've heard some people have had issues with it eventually melting the media trays, which are very close to it. I may look into a different external unit.
  12. Lots of great channels, I'll definitely check back to this thread for recommendations. My list has some of the popular ones mentioned above. For filter related topics I recommend Pondguru and Ben Ochart. Have not heard of guppy guru but will check it out. Recently I've been watching some of Fish Boy's vids... for some reason I really like his fish room.
  13. Hi @Chiasmus, I have no experience with plecos or larger fish, but you may want to look at a Sunsun 304b (and check out Ben Ochart's YouTube channel). They're around $100. I'd consider that for a 90 gallon, and have one on my 53 (my smaller tanks have Fluval 07 filters). The 304b has a large tray capacity for lots of bio media. For larger tanks I know some people like the Fluval FX filters. No matter which one you go with, check out Pondguru's youtube "pimp my filter" series for optimizing a variety of poplar filters. Good luck!
  14. I lied. I did nothing. I asked my daughter to do the water changes.
  15. A few weeks back I had a single platy develop ich (99 percent sure it was ich). The fish was eating and showing no signs of being ill from it and I treated with Ich-X based on Cory's recommendation. It resolved in a few days, did an extra treatment to be sure. A few weeks later the same fish disappeared, and I found him hiding beneath a sponge filter. When he emerged he had a white patch on one side below the gill that from every pic I can find looked like columnaris. Regardless, I figured it must be bacterial so I moved him to a separate tank and treated with Kanaplex. He pretty much laid behind the sponge filter initially. Rather then put it in the water, I made the food mixture that Seachem describes and fed him 3x a day. Fortunately he had an appetite. Now he's swimming around like normal and the white patch is gone. Will move him back probably tomorrow.
  16. Tetras gone, heater off... I'm leaving them, based on past progress seems like the best route.
  17. Could use some advise. I have pair of angelfish in a community tank that have spawned multiple times. Eggs hatched, usually beyond wiggler stage, but I never made any attempts to feed or save them as I only had one tank. Usually the batch of fry would disappear like overnight. I don't know if the parents ate them or the few other tetras in the tank, but didn't really care as I wasn't in a situation to do anything. Recently I setup multiple tanks and would like to attempt to keep these. All other times, they laid the eggs on the HOB intake, this is the first time they laid them on the heater. I'm going to turn off the heater and put a new one in. I'm going to remove the tetras. My options are: 1) Leave the eggs with the parents. I don't know who ate the fry other times. I can see the female protecting the eggs from the tetras now. I know they learn overtime to care for them. 2) Remote the heater and try to care for the eggs outside the tank. Best option? Thanks! Bill
  18. Diana Walstad goes 6 months without water changes and doesn't use any "artificial" fertilizer not produced by the fish, so I guess 6 months would be a good goal!
  19. @DaveSamsell thanks ... I thought I used the last of my bottled water when I made coffee this morning but found a bottle ... it's the test kit. All I can say is my phosphate is about the same if a tiny bit more than Trader Joe's Mountain Spring water.
  20. Thanks @DaveSamsell! Yeah, I know it's definitely common and will eventually clear. This tank had a bit more, and it's annoying because it's coating some plants that aren't easy to clean off (val and ludwigia repens which were growing), so I figured I'd see if there was anything I could do to reduce. Silicates are low and all other parameters are good. I've never check phosphate before so when I saw the level I checked my other tanks and then the tap water and they're all the same, around 3, maybe a bit over.
  21. I've done it both ways, but going forward I may stick to cycling without plants. They absorb ammonia and nitrite, which would be good if fish were in the tank, but if the goal is to build up beneficial bacteria (BB) in the filter media then I think it might be better to let them consume all the ammonia and nitrite. But I can't say for sure which way is better, or if there are better reasons for cycling with plants present... sounds like a good experiment to do!
  22. I called a local fish shop that I like and asked them what they thought. They can't speak to the test accuracy, but they did say they use Seachem phosguard on all their tanks.
  23. I just searched here for phosphate because I just tested with the API kit. I tested because I have some brown algae specifically in a 30 gallon that was setup about a month ago. I got a reading of about 3 ppm and I get about the same reading in all my other tanks, and tap water. Hmm...
  24. If I couldn't have gotten a 53 I'd have used a 40 gallon breeder and built a custom stand a little higher. I built all my stands out of 2x4 and just stain them, but for a display I was going to do something like this (I think using red cedar 4x4): https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinterest.com%2Fpin%2F551198441868460644%2F&psig=AOvVaw2SEJVyFSt9pWKaBeWHEZ3v&ust=1601074131865000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAIQjRxqFwoTCPiM-YjwguwCFQAAAAAdAAAAABAd
