  1. Mine hide a lot in the rocks but I do feel like it's clamped a fair bit when I see them out and about. Not sure if clamped is the right word but not flared. I think I know what you mean.
  2. That's perfect! I had forgotten you did that build video. That is such a clean set up! Hope we get to keep seeing your projects unfold. Thanks Randy.
  3. Bill, do you have experience with a solenoid valves that might be good to try for this application? Thanks for all your help! Open to anyone elses thoughts on good solenoid valves to use for auto water changes.
  4. @Randy any chance you can take pics of your fish room racks so we can see how you set them up and can you let us know what size they are? I'm trying to decide what racks to use between gladiator and the edsal 3 shelf rack.
  5. I was googling all kinds of things trying to figure out how I am going to set up my new and first full fish room so I can make things as easy as possible. In a moment of brilliance I decided to come search the forum and my man @Bill Smith comes through for me again. This is exactly what I am looking for, an easy way to get dechlorinated water for all my fish tanks. Now the add on question - do you think something like this could be set up with an auto water change system in mind? I'm not fully sure I am going down that route, but am curious if this type of system could potentially do it. My thought is that in this case, you might be constrained by the water flow. For an auto change system where you are changing multiple tanks at a time, you may need a stronger GPH flow. Or, on the flip side to over come the GPH flow, you may need to run some type of drip change system to allow for more tanks? So many things to figure out. Would be open to any thoughts.
  6. I second fishboy on YouTube. Great content on YouTube (in my top 3 content providers), had breeding and online fish sales experience (new website) and is transitioning to opening his own store. Think it would be super interesting.
  7. Very cool, keep us updated. I also have some rainbow shiners that I want to breed but need some ideas on how best to do it!
  8. Got this guy from a LFS. He's got some fairly serious discoloration on the top. Do you think it's some kind of disease or is it an injury. I don't think it's stress related. He is definitely pretty young but I don't think it's age that is causing the discoloration. Thoughts? I've got him in QT just wondering if I should treat and with which meds. I have QT trio or could get something else if needed. Thanks!
  9. Man that's awesome. As someone who can't get my sword to grow, what's your secret? I think I let mine get to far gone and need to start with a new plant. I have a fluval 3.0, root tabs and eco complete.
  10. Michael always says "K-I-S-S. Keep it simple, stupid." Great advice. Hurts my feelings every time. -Dwight Schrute Feel like this can apply to aquariums quite well, though I don't always follow it initially.
  11. My male german blue ram looks like he has fuzz or hair growing out of his head. Any idea what this is? He is pretty old. Do I need to move him to hospital tank? I've got one cycled and ready if so.
  12. Thanks for sharing. I have a group of 9 that I want to breed - 4 males and 5 females. Right now, they are all together. To breed them as you suggest do you recommend keeping the males and females in separate tanks and then adding a pair to the breeding tank?
  13. Pygmy sunfish would be a fun native. They are similar in size and temperament to scarlet badis.... Which would also be fun. Both look awesome.
  14. Made two, one for deep tanks and one for my low tanks. This thing is awesome and deserves a bump. So much easier to root tab it up!
  15. Those plants in the first tank look awesome. Any idea on name? Super cool hillstream tank. I really want to do that one day. I've got a much smaller one now with 10 rainbow shiners and 3 hillstream loaches.
  16. My pH out of the tap is similar to yours and my pH drops over time as well. I've got high GH but super low KH which I think contributes to it. I don't think it's a huge issue unless you are keeping African cichlids after cycling. I got some crushed coral from aquarium co op to help buffer my water but I haven't put it in yet to see how it impacts things.
  17. I've had a pair of German blue Rams living with my colony. They def eat some fry but it's heavily planted so a bunch make it. Only downside is that Rams take a higher temp than I'd like for my guppies. I'd do apistos next time instead.
  18. Frogbit is good. I use it in both my aquarium and pond. Floating hornwort works great for nitrates. I hate duckweed cause of how small it is and how it gets everywheverywhere. That's the extent of my knowledge so far. Good luck!
  19. This is a mutt strain I fell in love with mixing blue moscows with a random female and am trying to breed into a more consistent line. I've had decent success with first generation as about half were this characteristic. I am now in the middle of a big summer tub project to breed these using the first gens. I have a ton of fry but only the oldest are coloring out so far. I def see some carrying the coloring which is exciting but don't know what percentage yet. Hoping I can keep breeding it out to a pretty consistent line. I need to get more pictures of them.
  20. Based on the fish I have owned so far in my hobby, I'm going to go with rainbow shiners. Stunningly beautiful, active, and I catch myself watching them every time I walk by their tank. Now if I could figure out how to breed them... Fish I haven't owned yet but think I will really enjoy. Apistos and gobies both seem awesome and are on my short list.
  21. Thank you, that is good info. What temperature device are you using? Would you share a link? It looks like a good tool to have!
  22. Going to be a very unseasonably cool week this week in Kansas where I live. Do I need to worry about guppy fry in my pond at these temps? I've got Florida flagfish fry as well but I think they can handle it ok. First year summer tubbing and I'm thrilled with the results, just don't want to lose a lot of progress. Let me know your thoughts. Pond is approx 35 gallons, above ground, partial sunlight, heavily planted with a sponge filter running.
  23. Exciting update. I had put two florida flagfish in my pond back in early May as the first inhabitants that of course hadn't seen since. I had tried to sex them at the LFS just in case this pond breeding stuff works, but it was a complete guess. Well today when looking at my pond with the air pump off, I finally caught glimpse of them for the first time. And not only the two adults, but I could tell that some of the fry, now getting bigger, that I thought were only guppies are Flagfish fry as well! Victory! My first time breeding a fish other than a livebearer! Now I just need to figure out a plan to breed my rainbow shiners, but thats an indoor project and likely much more difficult to figure out.
  24. I have an extremely difficult time deciphering the Nitrate colors against the chart... The shades are so close I never know which one I really am. Hopefully I'm not the only one with this issue. Drives me nuts. I know they are not as accurate, but I've gone to the Tetra test strips and just test/compare them more often so even if the color isn't quite as accurate, I can see changes from test to test.
