    Can you use the inkbird 306 as just a fail safe for a malfunctioning heater. I’ve read on different places that it will not work as a fail safe and that the 306 has to control the heater. What I was planning on doing is setting the inkbird 306 to 80 degrees and my heaters to 77 so that the power only gets cut if it starts over heating. In reading some on inkbirds, one person said the 308 is better for this and the 306 cannot work that way. Does anyone know if it’s true?? @Guppysnail @s1_

    Mine are still in a 10 gallon quarantine. Because of the tank size it’s not very deep so I can’t say for sure regarding where they hang. In the 10 gallon they roam at all levels and tend to hang out in the plants and have eaten off the bottom. In a deeper tank I’m not sure what they will do. They’re really neat fish though. Love the red beckfordi. Their “sleep” pattern is also really neat.

    I recently got some red beckfordi pencilfish and love them. They are exactly as described. Very neat, peaceful schooling fish. I’ve fed them fluval bug bits and the extreme nano and they’ve eaten that. I also fed them frozen daphnia. They’re really neat fish!

    Hi Everyone, I was hoping for some analysis and discussion on the likelihood of having happy, healthy fish combining a spotted Congo puffer with three fancy goldfish. The fancy goldfish are two ranchus and a fantail(about 3”). I haven’t ordered and don’t have the puffer so there’s no emergency or issues right now. Just looking for thoughtful analysis on whether it’s even worth a shot. Per Cory and other experienced goldfish keepers, I keep my goldfish tank at 74-75 degrees. The tank size is 75 gallons and there’s also a lemon blue eyed bristlenose in the tank. I love my goldfish and would LOVE to get a Schoutedeni puffer to add to the tank. I don’t have the room to set up another dedicated tank for the puffer. Given the cost, I really want to analyze whether that combo has a relative likelihood of success. My initial thoughts are the biggest issues could be competition for food/different food needs and possible fin nipping of goldfish. In reviewing water parameters, it seems like both types of fish are pretty flexible as long as it’s low nitrate nitrite ammonia. My thoughts on the food would be to feed live scuds as a primary food source for the puffer and goldfish along with blood worms and some snails. I know there could be a choking risk for snails and goldfish. Also thought frozen or freeze dried krill would be another good option for both. Please let me know your thoughts!

    @Ken thanks. I agree. I saw the video but don’t have the table saw or access to any good power tools. I’ll make sure I have a sharp box cutter when I get it. I’ve checked online and Home Depot doesn’t have any in stock online or near me. Thanks for the information though. The search continues!

    @Ken thanks for the info. Where did you buy your polycarbonate sheet at? All the places I’ve looked only sell large sheets for <$50. Would a good pair of scissors cut it? How hard was it to cut with a box cutter? I’m planning on using that for create a lid for a 75 gallon so I think 48x24 would work great.

    Wow that’s awesome there’s that many south Jersey goldfish keepers on this thread. That’s crazy! Hello @GardenStateGoldfish! My suggestion would be don’t even start to look at any goldfish on King Koi until you’re ready to get one, it’s just like going to look at puppies. @gardenman that’s probably really good advice I just wanted the challenge of raising the goldfish up. I’ve gotten my goldfish to eat duckweed regularly to decrease the chance of bloat and I’m following the suggestions in corys videos and talks regarding keeping goldfish. In Coop we trust! Hopefully that will enable me to raise them to full growth.

    I live in South Jersey and recently purchased three ranchus from King Koi and Goldfish all the way in California. All the fish I received were very happy and healthy for me. Many of their fish ship free two day shipping and they get new fish 2 xs per week. While it’s not east coast, it may be a place to consider. Before purchasing I researched a bunch of places and felt for the price point and quality this was a good option for me. Reading their website it seems like they do a good job of quarantining any fish they receive and they have a huge selection. I’m not a goldfish aficionado, I purchased some as a hobbyist for me and my wife to enjoy, so the quality was great for me. I can’t say one way or the other if their fish are high show quality or good breeding stock, but with a trained eye you may be able to determine that after looking at their website. You can also request swim videos of fish you like before purchasing.

    For the sake of closing the loop on this thread for anyone looking into this issue in the future, I wanted to post what my experience was after implementing the suggestions posted to the thread. Unsurprisingly, the suggestions offered by the other forum members were spot on and effective, especially when combined. I fasted my goldfish for three days, ensured water temperatures were in the mid 70s and then interspersed floating food in with the duckweed. The goldfish caught the scent of the food and consumed the duckweed while they ate the floating food. From there, they continued heavily eating the duckweed to the point that it was gone the next day. I have since added more duckweed to the pond without mixing additional food with it. The pictures below show the amount of duckweed consumed from one afternoon to the next. They are hooked on eating it now. The food that worked for me was the Hikari Cichlid Excel—per Cory’s suggestions in his multiple goldfish videos. Thank you to everyone that provided input. I hope this helps someone in the future.

    Hi everyone, thanks for the input! I will fast the goldfish for a few days to see if that entices them to eat. I also bought some of the hikari cichlid excel that floats. If they don’t begin eating the duckweed after a few days, I’ll try the floating excel to see if that helps them to find it and start eating it

    Hello everyone, thanks for reading this post. I have two fantails and one ranchu goldfish (all about 3”) in an outdoor pond. I have a heater in the pond so water temps are consistent around 73 degrees. I feed solient green, hikari sinking excel, hikari goldfish excel, and goldfish bug bites. I also feed frozen spirulina brine shrimp. I want to encorporate more vegetables but so far haven’t had success in getting them to eat blanched lettuce. I recently added duckweed hoping that the goldfish would eat that, but so far it looks as though they haven’t ate any after the duckweed was added about 5 days ago. I usually feed once or twice a day in small amounts but since I’ve added the duckweed I am feeding every other day. I don’t think temperature is an issue since I have the heater and the fish eat greedily when I use other foods. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get these young goldfish to eat the duckweed and/or blanched vegetables? Is it just a matter of not feeding them until they eat it or do some goldfish just not eat duckweed? I don’t think the size of the duckweed is an issue because the pellets I feed are similar in size, if not bigger. Also, could it be that I need to feed some floating foods to train the goldfish to look more on the surface for food? Reading all about bloat and goldfish, I have been reluctant to use floating foods although I know Corey has no issue with it. Thanks for any suggestions!

    Thanks for the update and insight Bill! I’m hoping that by only having one small pond to deal with and stocking heavy plants/light on fish I can avoid getting burnt out working on it. That was a great idea on the airline tubing to keep open water!

    Hi Bill. Love the ponds and love the thread. I’m currently mulling over whether to start a 45 gallon porch pond. I was just wondering if you could update us on the ponds now. Do you recommend a certain type of fish or plant for a small pond like that now that you’ve had them running a while? For stocking I’m debating platys, guppies, rosey barbs, or three goldfish (which may be too overstocked for 45 gal)

    Thanks for the post. I’m currently working on raising ram fry but have found it difficult transitioning the wigglers to free swimming fry. I have another batch of wigglers now and have baby brine shrimp on the way so hopefully feeding BBS as soon as they free swim will help. @Fish Folk has been very helpful too

    I’ve used it before to help with cycling. I thought it worked really well. I only dosed it one time in the beginning and used a little more than the instructions said. You can add some more after the water change but just changing water shouldn’t affect the bacteria as long as it’s dechlorinated.

    @Fish Folk or anyone else.....how long after the ram fry become free swimming do you start feeding BBS? I have some vinegar eel cultures but think BBS will be much better for the fry per @Dean’s Fishroom and @Cory ‘s videos. I’m just worried that when the fry go from wigglers to free swimming, the BBS will be too big for the fry at that early stage. Right now I have a ton of wigglers so I’m trying to figure out when I need to fire up the Ziss hatchery I got from the Coop.

    Interesting post! My dream is to get a 100G or 75G tank for discus. It won’t happen for a long time but I’ve already been thinking about filtration options and the sponge filter question is a good one.

    I use Repashy community food mixed with freeze dried hikari blood worms and my sterbai corys eat well and love it.
