I just bought new Rainbow Shiners for the first time, but their color is not what I saw in videos and pictures! How do they get that bright red and blue colors?

Its also hard to feed them, they arent eating the mix of feed im giving them.

Its hard to find info on them thats why im asking

Normal farm stock will take abit to color up and their color will vary depending on who the breeder was and their lines.

I would just be patient and wait a few month to see what they turn out. As for feeding try something that float longer and smaller in size..normally new fish won't dig for food in a new aquarium

  2. I normally catch a few every year and kept some before. They normally require a bigger aquarium due to their size and attitude.

They can be a bully and with their bigger size, larger mouth ...smaller fish will get pick off. I believe my son have a small group growing outside in his tub. We may try to work with them if we had the space.

Hi There, im pretty novice to fish breeding but ive done my fair share of breeding ricefish, zebra danios, CPD’s and have some other fish growing out for future projects. Im curious if anyone has bred for things such as faster fry growth rates? Especially with my ricefish fry ive noticed there’s a huge disparity in the size and growth rates of fry

has anyone tried say pulling the top 5 or however many fastest growing fry and then breeding them together and then repeating for a few generations? And if so what were the results?
I can imagine there could be problems with fish growing faster than they are “meant” too but there is probably also a sweet spot?
not really planning on experimenting myself as i have limited space currently but the idea is interesting too me.

Fastest fry growth rate..itll be hard to do if you use judge the runner. Since not all fry hatched the same time and not all fry get the same amount of feed ect... need to make it as fair as possible.

I would Judge their growth rate as a group. I like a group of fry that are consistently the same size. Feeding alot of bbs will cause alot of runner atleast in my experience. I recommend finding a system in waterchange/feeding /food/temperature that work very well, stick to it, then just breed for a bigger fish.

  4. It's very well built, but I had the same issue.

I run mainly Swiss jetlifter so I already know the problem coming.

The coop have 1 single fine row of hoes where the air come out and it will clog. The Swiss clogs also but they have more rows, bigger holes and a remove sleeves to clean the hose.

I like the idea for directional flow, but that single row with fine hole is too air hungry. So I went around it and place an air stone coming from the bottom. Problem solved it also take less air to more the same amount of water.20240218_213649.jpg.1426ca950462d48a47906876a6798192.jpg

  5. Move all the fry within similar age group together, raise the temperature, feed them well and do alot of water change will max your fry growth. But if you do do all of that will the small bit of money really worth your extra time/effort.

I say slow down and enjoy your fish is worth more.

I also sell some fish throughout the year but it on my time and when I feel like shipping.

How long does it take for your males to grow their swords? I appear to have a number of males (gonopodium clear) spawned over the summer that are _not_ growing their swords yet after ca. 5 months.

This young male is 3 month old and started growing his sword already. I'm not sure how his body will turn out but only time will tell

Excellent, straight swords. Are they orange or red? lighting is a bit tricky. I have some decent brick reds going.

They are between orange and brick, this line also throw green.

I'm trying to get their body and sword length right first before I start working on color

  8. scarlet badis ...interesting.

I'm not a professional or anything but this is how i would approach this.

Set large goal to hit yearly or very few years and set mini goals to hit very few months.

    • yearly/multi years goals.. what i would work on is strengthening what the fish already have. If the fish is red make your family more red..bring the max out of your fish. I would raise the highest number of fish you can so you can select future breeder from.

    • mini goals ... what I would work on everyday/weekly/monthly? I would keep the feeding/maintenance the same in every aquarium. Every set of fry will be kept separate with their birthdate so every fry gets judged the same. For example, it's not fair to cull a younger fish at 4 months vs. a more mature fish at 7 months.

make sure you can house all the growing fry and the all the breeder and future breeders.

As for scarlet badis I'm not 100% how well they can handle inbreeding. For example Xiphophorus can handle inbreeding for multiple generation without and issue. White cloud can handle inbreeding for 4-5 generation before they need to be crossed out, and 8-10 generation on linebreeding if you know how to do it.

Inbreeding isn't the same as linebreeding, inbreeding could be siblings or another random relative fish without reason. Linebreeding is very controlled. You'll have to name breeders and keep record. Linebreeding is where you hug one side of the family either sire or dam.

if you have plenty of space I would recommend starting 2 family at the same time, itll give you something to cross to. Chances are you wouldn't want to cross you family back into a normal badis.

I recommend you cull hard and always keep the most healthy fish over the most colorful fish, itll be worth it in the long run. Making your family of fish more colorful is easy, making your family of fish healthier is way harder.

Consistency in size, healthy, color, and temperament is what I look for.

last and not least enjoying the results, i love going back to old photos and seeing my family changes over time.

@WhitecloudDynasty A very worthwhile project! My understanding is that some current swordtail color variations came from platys... if that is true, let me offer a suggestion. The colors of a the Coral Calico Wag Platy would look great on a swordtail.

That is very true but that would hurt the sword length and hurt the slim body length

  10. I been looking for some fancy livebearers that would work with my setup for a few years now.

    • Cooler temperatures

    • Softwater

    • 6.5-6.8 ph

    • Heavy waterchange

    • Smaller aquarium size

Started with guppies and mollies but they just fell apart in my water over a few weeks. The few time I picked up platies didn't work out or never bred.

I was able to start with this line swortails and this line seems to adjust well with my setup.

They are on their 3rd generation, going from 55-70f and 80-90% cooler water changes.

    Screenshot_20230909_222406_Gallery.jpg.b50f7805146c67f35f22527a5e594c6a.jpg

Now since they are surviving the fun began lol

It's time to start setting up breeding goals.

    • Color - haven't really decide what would be more fun and more of an challenge

    • Size - most breeder would breed for the largest fish, but I'm breeding for a smaller fish. It doesn't make sense since I mainly have 10-20gallon aquarium. I can keep them in bigger group.

    • Less aggression - I want to be able to put a decent group in smaller aquarium

    • Conformation - looking for a longer stream fish over a thick body fish. A very long sword.

This project will be a male line project.Screenshot_20230908_235202_Gallery.jpg.de4aea3f2f8fc00b5bdf9ef054bccc46.jpg

Male line project is a project where all decisions is made to improve the males of species regardless how the female looks.

Female line project is the opposite where all decisions is made for the female conformation regardless how those males turn out.

For example it's very hard to get a slim long casting male from female line you bred to be big and thick

    Hopefully all goes well

This week, I’m acquiring some of the more heavily blue-hued Rainbow Shiners (Notropis chrosomus). I’ll be getting a breeding group of wild-caught F0s, and a group of juvenile F1s. For perspective, there is some variety within this species — enough, in fact, that attempts at an updated taxonomy is underway. @WhitecloudDynasty has been breeding these. Here are several of his stunning F0 males…

Anyway, I have had to get tank space ready. For the juveniles to grow out, I gave an unused 20 gal (long). But it’s been rather unloved. Looking bad…

I had been raising Nothobranchius guentheri killifish in there, but when only males remained, I moved them on and let the tank “go.”

So, I replaced the lid, added an AquaClear 30 HOB, upped the air, removed the heater, performed a 95% water change, added several cups of crushed coral to counterbalance some peat moss remaining. Now it’s settling for a few days…

As it turns out… I have more tanks to clear out and fish to move along. Sumner tubbing season ends soon!

But this I got done today!

So the line you picked up is from Phil Kukulski I believe he hasn't work with them for long so almost directly from wild or maybe the first generation. They are also a bit more north than my blue line.

here's a photo from Zack of that line.received_726606099353709.jpeg.36eeb16e7021b9cb837d4bb40b632c7a.jpeg

And here a photo of the blue like I picked up

Itll be interested to see what that family kicked out.

I haven't introduced this blue line of mine into the hobby yet due to them not meeting my expectations. They are still kicking out deformity and not hardy.

If I didn't pick up the GA reds I would have try some of those also...so let me know how they do for you and what you get out of them?.

Hi, I was wondering weather anyone could offer some help with my white cloud mountain minnow breeding project. I have a ratio of 7M/3F and was wondering what is the best way to go about breeding them? How soon does it take the eggs to Hatch and can the newborns eat microworms right away?

That ratio is fine but that's alot of breeder in my opinion.

I normally put 2 pair in a fully planted aquarium and wait til you see freeswimming fry. They are very small and won't be able to to microworm right away...I recommend using a very fine powder to start with

So, out of the four fry one looks not good

Is it my feeding ,genetics, is there something I can do?

Instead of round the fish is narrow, the mouth seems off and it is not actie much and stays on top at the surface in the plants

I caught it easily and moved it to a net in another tank to watch more carefully. I wonder what can I do

Looks like a start of waste away disease. I also get that ever now and then. I would normally treat the whole aquarium with an antibiotic/dewormer fish food for 14 days. Seem to be work well.

Antibiotic I use is gram negative so it doesn't hurt your cycle
