  1. @Streetwisemy guy just hit 28 pounds and is a puppy dog.
  2. We all love nature here enough to bring it into our homes. What other non- fishy pets do we all have? I have a cat,3 turtles, 7 salamanders, 3 rats, approximately 100 land snails,15 snakes right now but I breed them so at my high point in the year I will I have over 100 snakes, And a dog
  3. Well if we are counting reptiles and outdoor tubs that changes a bit 😂 the new numbers are 2,431 gallons/ 86.7 avg/ 28 "tanks" I think I would have to count because some of the reptile tanks aren't measured in gallons. This is my snapping turtle that is In the my 450
  4. 1800gallons / 200Avg. / 9 total# I have a similar problem as @Daniel I have an 830 gallon gar tank. A 450 shopping turtle tank and a 300 hill stream tank. The rest of my tanks are under 90 with only one 10 gallon. You can see the 300 Gallon aquarium in the middle the snapping turtle tank in the back and the gar tank In the bottom left
  5. @StephenP2003 we had a a week or so in the high 90s the tub probably got up to 95 would be my guess for the hottest it got. I did check the temps when I pulled the shrimp for the season. The water temp was 52 the night before I pulled them it got down to the mid 40s that night
  6. @Sharon Roberts I will try the nerites when I try the Amanos I was trying to think of other thinks I could do with them. Live bearers would eat all the larva of the Amanos. @C Savidge I didn't feed them in the pond other then the fry food I was offering to the white clouds probably once a week. The shrimp had lots of algae To eat and I did put some calcium in the pond. in the tank I gave them food. I think they do get better with age but I think it's because they get bigger and so the color gets better because of the fact that their is more shrimp to have color.
  7. I don't really like the measurement of gallons to decide stocking. Tank size and shape matters much more in my opinion. I would recommend the a fish should have a minimum of 2x the Length of the fish for the width of the tank and 4x the length of the fish for the length of the tank. So a 6 inch cichlid should be in a minimum of a 1 foot wide by 2 foot long That is about a 20 long. So if the 35 gallon is 12 inches wide I would not do a fish that gets over 6 inches. If anyone disagrees with my thinking please let me know.
  8. Lol I like the thumbnail. I would say go for it if you can soak the wood first for a bit of time to get it to sink. If you are scared of being able to lift it once waterlogged I would just weigh it down with something that sinks like rocks.
  9. @FriendlyLoachI had white clouds in my pond but I think gold fish would eat to many shrimp no matter how much cover you had
  10. The list of fish has increased I have added 7 neon blue dwarf goby 7 hillstream loaches 6 yo yo loaches 5 assassin snails
  11. @C Savidge the small ones they do eat but it's not their favorite food they like black worms better. I do have some loaches and assassin snails that I hope will bring the population down to manageable
  12. @C Savidgeits all up to your local laws up here in MN the local aquarium club dose a darter collection every year and I have gotten my dace from local bait shops and the rest of the natives came from jonah's aquarium. Some states all you need is a fishing license others you need a special permit for aquarium fish collection and others you need a bait license
  13. This is my 300 gallon hill stream tank I'm working on adding more natives but on my list is war paints and some more darters. I'm in Minnesota so I'm a little limited as to what species I can obtain myself. This is a neat map I found of US freshwater fish diversity. I don't remember the source of the map however
  14. It is interesting how many people love the 20 long. I have a 8 foot long 2 foot wide 31 inch deep 300 gallon it is a beast of a tank and I love it, But for the "big" show tank I like the shape of the 150 fat boy at 4 foot long 2 foot wide and 31 inches deep the look of the tank just makes it seem really impressive for some reason. The photos are of my 150 fat boy when it had my turtle. My 55 before I replaced it for a 90 and the last ones are my 300 gallon @StephenP2003 I have a 90 rainbow fish show tank but I think if my living space could accommodate for it I would prefer the 180 or the 150 long for those species. @Lizzie Block have you seen the Mr aqua 12g or a 33 long if you like the longer tank I think you would dig those two @Ken Burke what is the dimensions on the 38 gallon? If it's the 22 inch high tank that sword is impressive! @HenryC I both agree and disagree with this. Yes for the the beginner A 20 long is better then a 10 but I think a 40 breeder gives a little bit more room for "mistakes". The 40 also dose feel like a "big tank" So I can understand the intimidation factor but at the same time it is one of its greatest strengths. As a beginner you would be able to have a few more fish then in a 20 which can help to hold interest and increase the activity of the tank and as you grow as a hobbyist you are able to expand to other species that can use that room a little more. I really appreciate your view on the 20 long. My first tank was a 20 long and I always felt I needed more @NordernAquariums like I said earlier I have a 90 rainbow tank it is a fun tank and I think I would get the same joy out of a 75 but the 55 just wasn't enough. If I had the space I think the 125 would be better for rainbows. They seem to really like the run space and don't care about how wide the tank is. The only reason for me the 55 wasn't enough was for the hard scape I have some large wood and rock in the 90 and in the 55 I just wasn't enough swimming space.
  15. I always count to the best of my ability and I plan on selling them all and starting a new next year
  16. I took 200 to a store so my guess is I have 400 left but I'll post a final count when I bring the rest into a store
  17. I am curious what everyone's favored tank size. I love the 40 breeder and the 150 fat boy. I think my favorite small tank is the 40 breeder. I love the 53 I had but it's so hard to get one.
  18. If your going to do a 4 foot 55 trust me a you will be happier with a 75
  19. @C Savidgewelcome lovely tanks. what kind of natives do you keep? I have a 300 with some US natives
  20. I got mine on craigslist but they are an old tank out of manufacturing now I think. The brand of mine was oceanic. For those who remember this tank had the thick glass that those old tanks had. It was very heavy for those of you who have never worked with one.
  21. I would look into a spotlight kinda like this one I have never tried this one but other full spectrum white lights like this do work for the easier plants. But you should look into spotlights more
  22. This is my old 53 gallon I had natives in it but it is one of my favorite sizes I've ever had. It's the same footprint as a 40 breeder just taller
  23. 40 breeder but one fish would be fine in the 29. I just believe that as a hobbyist we have an obligation to provide the best environment we can for the fish we keep. For some species that includes not only the size and cleanliness of the tank but also Social environment like appropriate school sizes. We always talk about the minimum size requirements for tanks but in my opinion For most things go as big as possible for your living space. I think the oceanic 53 gallon aquarium (36Lx18Wx21H)is the perfect tank for what you desire.
  24. I know that is what I was going to try a brackish pond with just Amanos. I would like a few hundred for my big tanks so I really would rather breed them then buy that many. Dose anyone know how long it takes for the larva to turn into shrimp?
