  1. Ok I was sick of looking at the bag of gravel in the tank so I removed it and replaced it with a few rocks. What do you guys think? Should I move the rocks around? Also if there is anything you would like to see more pictures of please ask and I will try to get come good ones
  2. I would say if it's a small tank you should just get a bigger one if you have a 29 I would upgrade to a 40 breeder or a 55. If you can't go larger I would go to petco for a dollar per gallon sale and just pick up a new one
  3. What I did is I focused on the species that really interest me. I got less tanks and I went bigger. I do have one tank that I can play with a little more and that's my 90 gallon I give myself a year to make it what I want it to be and if I'm not happy I change everything about it so I can keep new things and try other things. I also do summer tubing it helps too. I have my 800 gallon gar tank my 300 gallon hillstream tank and my 90 gallon community. In the summer I had a 110 stock tank that made about 400 shrimp for me
  4. If I were you I would dig a hole for those ponds and get some stock tanks for your summer tubing. I see some green houses in the back there I would put a few in there to experiment with the temps and see how long you can keep Tropicals outside. For those in ground ponds I would put them in ground a do a nice little year round water garden you could get a little waterfall going and have some cool US native minnows or do gold white clouds year round.
  5. Ice is really powerful and can be very unpredictable if you aren't being safe. Ice that freezes at different temps will react to changes in temp differently. For example if the lake freezes at 30 degrees and the temp drops 20 degrees the ice will get more and more brittle and will begin to brake up. If you are fishing out on the lake and the temps drop you could get stranded in the middle of the lake.
  6. As of the last update I have added some more plants some crypts and a few Anubis I also added some fish and I have some more darters on the way. The new fish I added are 6 gold shiners 1 silver flying fox and 3 albino bristlenose plecos. Other then that not much is new I still have the bag of rocks to hold down the wood. And here are some pictures
  7. In that same tank I would also breed a nice bristlenose pleco like super red or lemon.
  8. I am already working with a lot of dream fish as I own alligator gar and I have a 300 hillstream tank with a lot of little fast fish. As far as dream fish go it changes with the more species I learn but the one that stays pretty consistent is I would like to one day do a true Amazonian monster tank. A aquarium that is somewhere between 60,000-100,000 gallons with some of the Amazon's biggest fish but not in an "over stocked" way. I would want to make it an indoors flooded forest with monster catfish and rays and a few large peacock bass.
  9. I would like to do a tank like this someday but a little bit bigger. I love high flow tanks because of the behaviors and adaptations fish have in these environments
  10. I love the behaviors as well my canister is actually not really doing the true filtering of the tank. I do crazy water changes so the fx4 is more for chemical filtration. I feel like I'm never really happy with my flow I think everyone who dose one of these tanks feels the same way. I have around 9,000 gph of flow in the tank with the canister and two large return pumps.I think It helps to have multiple outputs for flow. I have two outputs but I may add more by slitting my output into two
  11. I love the river manifold idea I did a modified version on my 300. That is my hill stream community. Are you happy with the amount of flow you are getting? Do you have any plans to make more tanks like this in the future?
  12. Have you decided on a tank size for your desks yet. I personally would go with 8 120s or the 150 fat boys if you wanted a taller tank. however having 16 2 foot cubes would be cool as well. The build is looking great I joined the Nerms just to see the build in video. I look forward to seeing more thank you for all your hard work
  13. I agree with Cory monsters are a tricky subject I now own 2 alligator gars but I have a 800 gallon pool pond for my guys. I have had my baby boy bubbles for almost 10 years now and i love my little guy he is 3 foot long and I am hoping to get him up to 5 feet however I was young and dumb when I got him (still dumb and still pretty young) I plan on upgrading him to whatever I can whenever I need to for him. That being said learn from the monster keepers who have failed. the people who want to get a fish like that and they think a 125 is a big tank you should not keep anything that has the ability to get bigger then 18 inches.
  14. I went to red lake up in Minnesota ice fishing about 8-10 inches on the lake and got a limit of walleye. Spent 2 nights out there and the ice was pretty loud. for those who don't know the ice will shift and it cracks which make a lot of noise it's "safe" for the most part.
  15. I got three that are large ones and I put them in my 300 they are doing great with the smaller ones that I had in their. I would say try it and if he doesn't work out you can either find him a home that you feel will be good for him or this is a good time to get another tank and you can build the stocking around him
  16. Honestly I wouldn't heat the water at all I had my snapper eat half a heater once (he is fine) if the water stays around room temp that will be fine 68-75. I would do a zoo med power sun for his basking light to make sure he can get hot if he wants to they do need to be changed I think every six months to a year. All UVB lighting will go bad over time but it is super Impotent for them. The leg out in that picture is pretty common for turtles to do when basking they will take all sorts of yoga positions when they are in the sun to get as much UVB and heat as they can it also helps them to dry out all the way because if they don't get all the way dry they can get fungus and bacterial infections here are some good pictures I found on the internet of them doing this
  17. You could also go with yellow fin shiners or saffron shiners I am trying to get warpaint shiners for my 300
  18. If you want trout the CPD reminds me of a brook trout however not US native. if you want the biotope for a US hill stream you can get rainbow shiners and rainbow darters for a 20 gallon I would get 3 darters for a 20 long and do about 10 shiners. You could have a orange spotted sunfish in a 20 tall they are very pretty and aggressive like a cichlid that dose best alone and with lots of wood. Not my photos
  19. @Thanassi I have a Fx4 it's a little under filtered I'll probably get a FX6 soon. If anyone is interested in seeing more of my 300 hillstream tank feel free to fallow my other thread. I have a bunch of us natives as well as some fish from Asia
  20. My 300 gallon has a bunch of US natives I wish I could get some more from the east coast I have green sided, banded, Johnny, and rainbow darters as well as southern red belly dace, stone rollers, blue head chub, rainbow shiners, and a tadpole madtom that is to big and needs to be moved. Here are some pics if anyone has the ability and is willing to legally ship me native fish please reach out
  21. They like to be on the colder side of room temp and lots of oxygen in my experience
  22. Lol I know 36 is "cold" for most however I'm from Minnesota that is t- shirt weather while ice fishing. It gets bad when we have 4 feet of ice on the lakes and it's -30 most days. That being said I am working on keeping fish outside for summer tubing and in July and August it will hit high 90s pretty often. That also has its challenges when keeping fish outside
  23. So as we all know some fish should not be available to the general public this being said those are some of my favorite fish. So I was on craigslist this little guy was there and one thing led to the next so I ended up getting this little guy(2 foot). He was in a 125 which was way to small for him and so I am now the proud owner of two alligator gars but now I'm left with the difficult task for giving this one a name that fists. The first pic is of bubbles he is the one that is larger and in the second pic he is under the new guy. The third pic is the new gar in his old tank. The fourth is of the new gar in acclamation
  24. As far as the sit time I think you are fine with a few days in the garage but you can do it for as long as you want. On my 300 I run an fx4 but I will probably be upgrading before to long. Here are some options I would go with sump because they can be great if you like to tinker with it and get the most bang for your buck in my opinion. A canister filter can be wonderful if you get a big pond one with a back flush mode it is one of the easiest ways to do a water change I have one on my 800 gallon. However if sponge filter is what calls to you they work great and are one of the most energy efficient filtration out there. I have a questions for @Daniel how do you filter your big tank?
