I just found one of my fish belly up. It was a small Threadfin Acara maybe 2 to 2.5 inches. It lived with an Electric Blue Acara and a Krobia Xinguensis in a 29 gallon tank. I tested the water and I checked the fish for obvious signs of death. The water parameters are 0 ppm Ammonia, 0 ppm nitrite, and around 25 ppm nitrate. Soft water, 0 buffer, low ph (6.4-6.8) Temp around 78°. I have never seen any aggression, I have used the med trio, dewormed, have always fed fresh foods, and both of the other fish look good. No heavy breathing, both swimming around, and eating, even the nerite snail is moving across the glass. I'm going to do a water change and continue to check on the others. Is there anything else I should do? Any thoughts?

See when I put it in the tank it had some converted leaves and some that I knew would melt. The whole plant melted away very fast and when I took the pot out of the easy planter there was the sulfur like smell and even the substate turned kinda grey that was underneath it.

See all my other crypts melted a leaf at a time and have blown up with growth and I've never experienced the smell like i have with this one

Over 2 weeks

So I got a crypt wendtti and an easy planter awhile ago and the crypt completely disintegrated. All of the leaves down to the roots. I did some reading and most sources said the plant should come back so I let it be until today when I was feeding my fish. I opened up the aquarium lid and it smelled horrible so I took the pot out of the easy planter and the smell was coming from that. I took the roots out of the rock wool and half of the roots were rotting. I went to my sink and rinsed and removed all of the rotten roots but some roots still looked good. I planted them back in the substrate and I'll see what happens. Does anyone know what may have caused that?

First off I'd like to say thanks to every awesome person in the fish and aquatic plant keeping hobby. Thanks to this forum I've managed to learn a great deal about the hobby in general. My most recent experience was with Green Spot Algae which has helped me with lighting and nutrients. I have found a cool hack if that's what you'd like to call it and thats how to remove algae from glass and plants, mainly anubias which is currently the only species I have. I found these bath gloves at walmart and thought they would be a easy way to clean off algae, and they work amazing. So I thought I'd share.

I should have probly included how tall the aquarium is, Its just under 2 feet tall. The biggest anubias is about 6 inches tall and the leaves spread out about 9 inches.

Ok, Ty. I have been wanting to try crypts anways since the only plants I've kept so far are anubias.

I have purchased a powerhead to help with flow, but what would be a good way to shade the anubias? I am gradually lowering light intensity and shortening the time the light is on. I could look into floating plants.

I've had my 38 gallon bowfront running for years, after my previous "wet pet" passed away I decided to get some new fish and wanted to get into growing plants. I changed substrate from river pebbles to sand, added some mopani wood, and placed a pothos in the tank. The current stock in the tank are 1 blue acara and a bristlenose pleco . I have 5 plants, I started with anubias barteri then added anubias coffeefolia, nangi, gold coin, and nana petite. I have had tons of brown diatoms for months so I did research and seen that they need silicates to live and that a phosphate remover would help removing silicates. I wiped the diatoms off the leaves, did a water change and put PhosBond in the filter. Now that i havent seen much diatoms I have noticed green spot algae on almost every plant. I researched GSA and seen that low phosphates and high lighting is what it thrives in, so I removed the PhosBond. I have a 24" Fluval Aquasky led light that i have had running at white 100%, red 70%, green 70%, and blue 10% for 10 hours a day. Ive been lowering the light intensity slowy, and started dosing easy green, I have used easy green but not every week. Ive seen nerite snails will eat the algae but i have soft water. I dont want the algae to smother out my plants and If anyone has any recommendations on how to get rid of this algae I would appreciate it very much.

My blue acara has these white/clear marks on the pectoral fins nowhere else. The fins have looked this was for over a month. I treated with salt and then with maracyn oxy. They dont seem to affect him, he eats and is very active. I am looking to get a pleco, a blue phantom pleco to be exact. Is the med trio safe to use while Quarantine?

A quick google search says the cichlids I have are omnivores but are more carnivorous. I've had plecos in the past both common and bristlenose and they were able to get their food I've just never had one this small. The cichlids being juveniles makes me think they will mess with any food I drop in the tank. I did get some broccoli and I have carrots as well so I think putting the pleco in the breeder and putting the food in there should work.

I have a floating breeder that i was going to try to feed it in and there are a bunch of caves, crevices, and such but they seem to wriggle there way in to mess with the wafers. I just want to make sure it gets to eat.

So I have a small bristlenose pleco and 3 juvenile blue acara cichlids. The pleco is about an inch and I've tried to drop algae wafers in the tank for him but the cichlids grab the wafers and move them around pecking at them not giving the pleco a chance to eat, ive tried dropping one in with the lights off at night but im pretty sure the cichlids ate it, they all had full bellies when I checked the tank in the morning. I have 1 small piece of wood and 2 large pieces and some algae in the tank will that be enough for it to grow until it gets large enough to take the wafer for itself? I feed the cichlids xtreme pellets, cichlid gold pellets, and I have frozen brine shrimp. Any tips, suggestions, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yea ive used purigen before to deal with tannins, I just like the clear water and as for stocking im putting in a few normal blue acara and a bristlenose pleco, for plants I have an anubias barteri in the tank and have an anubias nangi on the way and im wanting to get a dwarf water water lilly or a tiger lotus.

Ok. I've had the wood in a tote for about a week now and I've been soaking it in hot water since the peices are to big to boil. Tyvm

So this is my first time putting plants in my aquarium, I went with anubias and I am planning to put another plant in maybe dwarf lilly or tiger lotus. I plan on using easy green fertilizer and was wondering if using carbon in my filter would be counter productive. The only reason im using carbon now is to remove tannins. Is purigen a better option? Or will the carbon in the filter be ok?
