  1. My sadly missed Betta, Jasper. He was soft blue with maroon which is the team colours for Aston Villa football club (although I’m not a fan of football). AV are from Birmingham, and of the famous Brummies we liked was Jasper Carrot the comedian, so he was named Jasper. Jasper was my friend, I would put the tip of my finger in the tank and he would come and look, if there wasn’t a treat on the end he would look at me and flare! Obviously this caused me to add a treat, and then he would swim around my finger and let me tickle his fins. Such an appreciative little fish. Miss him a lot.
  2. My favourite would be Fairy Moss - Azolla sp. They have a nice variation in colour as they grow with pinks and soft greens, but most of all is the texture they create, and the Bettas seem to enjoy hanging out just under the roots.
  3. Thank you all so much for your help, that’s really appreciated. Previously I have used the “feed the tank” method, but I didn’t like all the manky bits of fuzzy grot floating round, so decided to explore other options. With my first steps in to Discus keeping I was very keen to keep the water as pristine as possible, so the ammonia route seemed the best plan. I will begin with 2ppm, drop to 1 after a couple of days and fall to .5

  5. Hello Fish Folks, What a fantastic idea Cory, thanks so much for setting this up to share the love and knowledge of water keeping! We have 10 tanks on the go at Bedon Cottage Aquarium, based in Norfolk U.K. mainly Betta fish orientated, but diversifying and exploring all the time.
  6. Hello Fish-Folks! I am preparing a new tank which will be home to my first Discus fish, and I would like to establish and cycle the tank before it is stocked. I have heard about the fish-less cycling technique; seeding bacteria with “Stability” and feeding them with household ammonia. My question is; how high a concentration of ammonia should I be maintaining in the water for this to be effective? I routinely test using the API master kit, and plan to measure the concentration of ammonia by adding and testing, but how many ppm should I be aiming for? My gut feeling is something like 2ppm, topping up as necessary to maintain that concentration and running like that for a month or so. What are your thoughts? Thanks In advance Folks!
  7. Clean, tidy and efficient, a classic Dean design. Very nice indeed Sir!
